Love the belt sander platform, John. Built mine about a year ago. I use it mostly in the vertical position for straight edges. Was a particular godsend when I had to sand about 60 pickets for my new deck. Thanks.

John - kudos on a good channel. I wanted to let all the worry-warts out there know that pro framers (home builders) have been cutting large radiuses with a circular saw for decades. It's 100x faster and produces a much better cut than a recip saw or jigsaw - and it's perfectly safe if you know what you're doing. Biggest trick I'd like to mention I'd to keep the blade depth as shallow as possible, and use a very good carbide blade. The shallow depth is what allows the saw to 'drift'. I've done it 100s of times- perfectly legitimate technique.

I'm a renovation contractor and I've used my circular saw to cut literally thousands of sheets of plywood (so many floors!). What John did by cutting that piece of OSB in a semi-circle is completely acceptable. There was no safety issue there. If you set your saw blade to only cut the thickness of the wood, and you know what you're doing, you can cut circles all day long. Also, OSB is so soft, I"m not even sure your saw would kick on it, just blow the chips away... Good stuff John, keep 'em coming!

I've got the same belt sander. Got it back in the early 90s. You can't kill it. And works really good with the dust collector or shop vac. As far as cutting that circle goes. I've seen guys cut straight lines so dangerously that I couldn't bare to watch them and when I did I had to hold my breath and pray. I even worked with a framing crew wants that had no guard at all connected to their saw. One of the guys was nicknamed "two toes" Gee, I wonder how he got that nickname. Anyway, I too have been cutting circles like that for years. Always with caution of course. Love your videos keep them coming.

Makita has been making that model sander for over 30 years. I bought mine in 1982 - thousands of hours and it's still going strong. However, I HAVE seen oily rags spontaneously combust - the experiment John did just didn't have enough volume for the heat to build up. In my case it was about 8 rags soaked with linseed oil and turpentine left in a pile, luckily outside. similarly damp hay or even a compost pile have the same potential.

Nice belt sander platform. Love to see improvements for it. I have tried some similar jigs for my belt sander and I get really frustrated that they have to make everything so round. Not a straight plane anywhere. That was a Black & Decker. The Makita looked heavenly straight. I was hoping you would say at 7:33 "and I hope that the people that dont enjoy these types of videos didnt enjoy it"

Cautious risk taking is not the same as carelessness, but the risks need to be worth the possible negative outcomes. You seem to be cautious. Maybe you can start the linseed oil fire by throwing the running skill saw into the box of papers. Nice design on the sander. Thanks for all you great ideas and design. It must be hard to keep making new videos all the time. I commend all the KZbinrs who share like you do.

john, the safety brigade are running wild with woodwork. Power tools can be dangerous but common sense must prevail. I suspect that the critics are not really witness to working with power tools. I remember Izzy Swan got similar problems from the safety brigade and I think that as long as you have ten fingers and toes and can make interesting projects then I guess your a winner. I wonder how long a project will take in a 'safety shop'. They are all chancers!

I feel like you always explain that what you do works for you and it may not be for everybody and that is pretty much all you can do. Hi john, about the circular saw, i could never do that cut in that way, i think is dangerous, i do that kind of cut with my sawzall or my jigsaw, BUT, that´s my opinion, my wife thinks that every time i turn on my tablesaw i am going to lose an arm or at least a finger, is just perspective, everyone has to do their work in the best way for each one. For the safety patrol, i leave the next video, a little kid working with electricity, a hammer, an electric drill and a homemade lathe, enjoy. Токарный по дереву

It's starting to happen here in the UK. Some of what is going to court is ridiculous. What is needed is for judges to say "f*&k off," when these cases are brought before them. I was unfortunate to have have a few rags soaked with linseed oil erupt into flames. I worked for a fast food chain back in the late 70's. My manager had me wipe down some woodwork in the restaurant to help maintain a good look. When I had finished with my work I stored the wet rags with the can of linseed oil in a cabinet. I was 16 at the time and didn't know any better. About three hours later we smelled something burning that wasn't burger's, fries or toasted buns. We all started looking for the source of the smell and it seemed to be coming from a storage cabinet. The next part happened real fast. I opened the cabinet and it was full of smoke and when the fresh air got to the linseed oil soaked rags they erupted into flames. I grabbed them with a pair of tongs and threw them into the wash sink where I quickly extinguished the fire. Since then every time I use linseed oil I always leave the rags laid out flat in a well ventilated area to prevent any chance of spontaneous combustion. Just be careful! Marty

Great video, I have always loved collections of answers. As to the "safety shop experts...." I cannot think of a profession where accident and injury are not part of the job. Taking care and REASONABLE caution is what my father taught me. He was an airline mechanic and crew chief for over 40 years. Scrapes, cuts, and bruises were just part of the job. Cigarettes and cancer took him, not careless injury. I know her fired a number of people over the years because they were, in his words, dumb as a post when it came to shop/personal safety. I as a chef have been cut and burned while working in the kitchen. I still have 10 fingers and all of my appendages. When working with wood I have had only one major mishap, I put my thumb through the blade of my table saw after a marathon session of cutting wood for a cabinet. Even then it was only a 1/16th of an inch, because I took the precaution of allowing the blade to stand only 1/16th of an inch proud of my material. If the "safety experts" had been running the show since the beginning of this country, nothing would have been built. Hunting and gathering would have been severely restricted due to the potential danger of the weapons and tools available. Bottom line, accident occur when the brain is not fully engaged. A person can do damage with a butter knife if the just don't pay attention to what they are doing. Keep up the great work on your videos and expanding the limits of what can be done with tools we own.

Your belt sander rig is a great idea. I don't really see making circular cuts with a circular saw as being a whole lot more dangerous than making normal cuts. You have to pay a little more attention maybe, but the reality is you always run the risk of the saw binding up and kicking if your not careful. Sharp spinning metal things near your body are kind of inherently dangerous.

Safety third, common sense first. My god the KZbin safety patrol is tedious. Next test of the linseed oil would be to actually put sparks (like from grinding metal) and lastly flame to it and see how well it actually burns. My experience is that oils often just smoke a lot and need a lot of heat to burn.
