It’s taking me forever to input my record collection into discogs. I lost my login info 2-3yrs ago so I had to re-input all of my records again. I am up to 1300 albums and I am about 75% done logging them back into the app again. I do really like that it gives you the value of your collection.
@booieaguilar4792 Жыл бұрын
I Started logging my collection last year. It's not many, I just broke 100 record count but I make it a habit to log it right away as soon as I get it. And it is fun to watch the value of your records go up
@michaelc.antonino4740 Жыл бұрын
Do you log it in by runout? The barcode doesn't cut 90% of the time.
@booieaguilar4792 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelc.antonino4740 not sure exactly what you mean by runout, but I just type in the catalog number that's on the spine manually and 99% of the time it pops up right away, if multiple versions pop up then just go through the pictures and see which one you have. Then you press what looks like a sideways sandwich to catalog and press it a second time to put specifics in like the grading of the record and the sleeve and then you can put notes in too.
@garyharper2943 Жыл бұрын
Man you caused me a lot of work. Input everything into Discogs. Now I’m listening to each one grading vinyl and sleeve. Good excuse to listen to records I haven’t visited in a while.

Kudos to the kind souls who created the thousands of entries in Discogs. It is incredibly tedious. I found a 1950s album of 7" 45s. I tried adding it to Discogs. I finally gave up after several attempts trying to add all the information required to create the listing.

@PilgrimFL Жыл бұрын
@@ThiKu Honestly, it was more than a year ago and I can't remember. I can imagine that there are far more variables with vinyl than CD listings. Such as pressings, plants, label and cover variations, etc.

I would be one of those "in process" folks. I have most of my original collection entered but I'm still working on two collections I acquired. I moved around the US a lot in the late 70s and all of the 80s. It interesting seeing which pressing I picked up versus one my sister picked up back where my family lived (part of the learning rabbit hole you mentioned). Thanks for the interesting video.

Trust me. I am not good at any of this! But, on a real lousy Wintery day, I started entering my albums, and I slowly did 20, maybe 50, a day and now I have 430. My low estimate is $3.1 thousand, my medium is $7.3 thousand. And my mint estimate is $19.4 thousand. I feel like that is very accurate. Mine is mostly classic rock, and I mean from 60s till whenever. $5,000 could take it… but I’m not sure. Actually, my grandson and I just had that conversation the other day. I told him that it was his problem.

Also, don't forget in the event of your passing, it will be helpful for your family if they don't want to keep the collection to evaluate its value and sell it. For store owners, it helps them make a reasonable offer having a list of what's in it. Still a work in progress for me, 70% of my record collection is in, now I need to focus on my other media (CD, SACD, Reels, etc) And yes, the main point is to make sure you don't own that record when you find it. On the tedious part, for older LP, it's sometimes very hard to find the correct pressing 1.because there so many, 2. they don't necessarily have all the information and 3. remember the database is built by users so errors, mistakes are possible. But yeah, I have a few record I wasn't able to determine which pressing it was definitely so I picked the one closest. To save time mostly. Also, I'm in the habit that when I play a record, I input in my collection. That way is a painless way to slowly build it up.

Agreed. I failed to mention this. Incredibly useful if/when you need to sell under any circumstance.

To reiterate one of the major considerations mentioned here: I spoke with Chad Kassem at Axpona 2019 about my family getting in touch with him if something ever happened to me. First thing he mentioned was a spreadsheet, while Acoustic sounds and Elusive Disc have what they sold me for 20+ years in their databases, they don’t have the rest that I’ve picked up in so many countries. I’ve also added a “still sealed” category to my Discogs collection since some of the pressings/copies have never been opened.

I do have a question though. How do you get Discogs to put a different varient in? I have a whit label promo of Say She She, and they don't have it listed with the other varients so I just cataloged it under a regular black record. So how do you go about submitting it, or how do you put it in yourself?
@Judy_P Жыл бұрын
It depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. Keep in mind that listing the proper VERSION is important should you later decide to sell your item on Discogs (yes, sometimes buyers , myself included, are only interested in a specific version). "Database Guidelines" under the "Community" tab provides detailed info regarding submission. Start by reading the "Basic Guidelines" and the "Overview Of General Information" sections. To verify that what you mean by "white label" and/or "promo" is the same as what Discogs means, you'll want to read Section 6 of the Database Guidelines. If you need to enter a new version, then follow that path. If you decide you have a different variant of a version already listed, then you are able to directly update that particular version (sometimes I do; sometimes I just add it to my collection). The more experience you gain, the easier it becomes. I'm still in the process of cataloging. Sometimes I can identify my item quickly. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing a huge game of multi-dementional "What's the Difference?"

That would not help. Pre-1980's LPs were pressed in mass, and most releases have many many versions. An image of the cover would only send you to the main release, you gotta go off very unique specifics in the dead wax and/or on the disc label
