After 4 years of scales and repetition and practice, getting around on the neck still isn't easy, but I'm starting to grasp it without having to think about it.

I know this approach. What is missing is the vocabulary of licks for each pentatonic box, to know which notes to bend etc… this takes time to build up too. But that is what it takes to learn how to play an instrument.
