Our water comes from a spring about 900 feet up from us. We have a Berkey but only used it before when we were living out of a 12' x 20' Amish shed and collecting rain water like Jen & Jay. The spring water is not filtered and we drink it straight. Every 6-months we test the water using one of those kits you can buy from the big box hardware stores. So far, (10 years) all has been good. I do like your filter set-up and I may add that for kicks and giggles. 73 & God Bless

I really like our Berkley water filter system. I've had mine for about 6 yrs now and just love how it makes the water taste better than the store bought water bottles. I use vinegar and water to clean mine so there's no soapy residue built up on the inside of it. And the vinegar takes care of the bacteria if there is any. Thanks for sharing your video. Take care

I purchased one in 2020 and its been sitting in the closet ever since. I watched someone do a review on different filters and started using the zero water pitcher. I think i will get my Berkey out and start using it. The zero water has the best tasting water though. Its just a little pricey to use, average of 15 dollars every 20 days or so for two adults and a very thirsty shep/chow mix. Great content 👍

We definitely need something like this. I found a Canadian made brand for cheaper and it does the same stuff. I'll have to because we had left a few jugs of water up at the camp and Jason said they had already started getting algae in less than a month. That's from untreated well water from home. Oh well...live and learn. Also a PITA to bring them back and forth

Great thorough explanation! We have city artesian well water, but there are issues if a line breaks, so will consider getting one to keep in our camper in case the need arises again. We do have some chlorine in the water so we cook with it as the chlorine will evaporate during cooking, but we only drink our refrigerator filtered water which has the chlorine filtered out.

I think your system is pretty much the bare essential. We are likely to do the same in our new place. Since our system isn't fully set up, for now, since we aren't full time, we just keep a supply of gallon jugs filled at home along with store bought water bottles. A little cumbersome but works.
@IdahoEagle774 ай бұрын
We have a Berkey too. We have been using it for years. With the tests in recent years that show Berkey was not telling the truth about what their filters actually filter out, we stopped trusting them. Also, I thought you couldn’t get their filters anymore? That was the recent news we heard.

Love your channel! I don't live off grid, but the water here is terrible. What I do is purchase my water from a company that specializes in safe, healthy and affordable water. They also have a propane business. The water comes in 5 gallon containers and they use the reverse osmosis system. Once a month they run a sale and the price of a bottle is $2.50. I have 5 bottles (25 gallons) so I have plenty of time to decide when to get water. The cooler cost less than $100 and has both heat and cooling.

I've been wanting a berkey will need I for our off grid cabin. I have a Simpure it's a counter top reverse osmosis. I really really love ours but it does require power. I may plug it into our solar generator and see how much power it pulls since it only runs when you refill I or pull water from it.
@johnmal59755 ай бұрын
I use the sim pur reverse osmosis counter top. It pulls 30 watts while filtering draws nothing off my power station. I like the ultra violet light feature. I will be picking up a berkey type as well the more the better.

Thanks for the water vids, they are useful and have been giving me some ideas! I do want to know - you are not using berkey water to wash dishes, correct? Is there concern for bacteria, etc since after using dish soap you would rinse with the water only run through the less beefy filters?
@OffgridwithJayandJen5 ай бұрын
I was kinda worried about that, but I think the two filters I have under the cabin clean out anything to worry about.....and we have not gotten sick yet....so there is that.

Nice video Jay!!! How do you keep track of the gallons you have filtered so you know when to purchase a new filter?
@johnr36035 ай бұрын
They start to slo down some, or do the math,,gal x week x month, gets you close…
@OffgridwithJayandJen5 ай бұрын
I believe they become slow to filter and will take forever to filter. We bought this unit used with two used filters.....used it for a couple years back while in the camper....then two years ago we bought new ones just to be safe.
@viewsfromthe5195 ай бұрын
How often do they recommend you change the filters out? Just per gallon usage? Or is there a time aspect as well?
@OffgridwithJayandJen5 ай бұрын
Just per gallon really.....if they slow down too much or won't filter...time to change them. If they are consistently used and kept wet, they will work well for years. If they get dry, they just need to be soaked or primed again.
@SJC495 ай бұрын
Jay - does the bottom of the unit have a ‘window’ (like coffee makers) so you can tell how low/high the water level is?😍🇨🇦
@OffgridwithJayandJen5 ай бұрын
It does not....they do make a glass attachment that hooks to the bottom inline of the spicket.....it shows you the water level. I just lift the top part up to look inside.....but not everyone could do that. I'll try to get Jen to find that part and put a link in the description box.

Thanks for the in-depth tutorial. It's sometimes hard to judge an item online. Have you ever had to get new gaskets, have yours ever split, or cracked? Thanks again for sharing. @@OffgridwithJayandJen yes i was raised on well water myself, but with coal strip mining we had to start filtering it, and filter systems cost more than city, such as solar, its good and all. but when you price running electric to the woods, 10k is cheaper than 100K for new lines. some people think its easy, and cheap, with no other numbers applyied, just letting them know, connivence cost money too.
