AWESOME! The best DIY videos you have done so far. We survive on three food grade 55 gal drums for our in-house-water. We fill our 55 gal drums ~twice a week from a spring about 900-feet up the mountain. The pipe from the spring runs 24/7 in the winter to a dried creek bed so it does not freeze. In the summer we run the water pipe to a "Y" joint from the spring to our garden and house and use a "drip field timer" to water the garden. Great job folks! Thanks for sharing. 73 & God Bless

To double the capacity at the pole barn, you could put a tote on all four corners and raise the gutter in the center to split the water to both corners on each side of the barn. One gutter could then fill two separate totes. So side A would fill totes 1 & 2 , and side B would fill totes 3 & 4. I love the system you have. I just wish some of the totes were elevated closer to the gutters to allow you to use gravity to move the water. Something to consider if you add more totes. A stand should be easy to do with a couple of 4x4's and some 2x6's. What do you think? Stay safe and God Bless!

Hi guy's, Nice water setup for sure. You could also add 1 or 2 to the back of the house to fill the garden tank. You can also connect 2 tanks together at the bottom end with short piece of pvc pipe. For those times when you get extra rain fall. Love the gravity feed line down to garden idea..

I think one inch of rain on a 400 square foot roof will give you almost 250 (249.35) gallons of water. One gallon = 231 cubic inches; one square foot (12 inches X 12 inches) with one inch of rain = 144 cubic inches; 144 cubic inches per sq. ft. X 400 sq. ft.= 57600 cubic inches; 57600 divided by 231 cubic inches per gallon = 249.35 gallons

When you live off grid you learn how to reduce your usage of water. Being single I only use 15 gallons of water a week. You don't leave the sink or shower run. You get wet shut it off, lather up and then rinse. You become very aware of what you are doing.

Fantastic! Thank you! I have a well, a rain catchment system, a spring, and a lake, so I always have plenty of water. I also have a vertical hydroponic growing system inside 2 huge heatable greenhouses, so I always have food. Anyone can have a permanently growing food crop this way, with very little work. The work involved in my system after planting is simply adding liquid fertilizer twice a year to the barrel of my automatic watering system, which is powered by solar. No other work is needed until after harvest, when the system is sterilized. I invented this system and it produces more food than any other similar system in the world, so of course it outgrows ANY system using acreage. Using this system, there is no need for acreage other than room for a very large greenhouse, of which I have two. I can feed my own family, my extended family, the neighborhood, a couple of food banks and sell microgreens to high end restaurants, all my simply using my noggin.

Great video. We also live off grid without a well. Our cistern is in the basement of the cabin. We don’t have a hot water heater, so we only have cold running water. For our shower we have a small pump with an RV filter. We put about 4 gallons of warm water in the tub and drop the intake in the tub. We can shower both of us in 4 gallons of water.

bore a Shallow Well, only 20 to 25' deep you can find water, with a 2" intake / discharge pump and water. Locate well spot with dowsing rods. look it up on youtube, put 1" pvc pipe with a well point, use a shallow well pump 1 hp to pump water up to a tank. good for watering plants etc.

Curious, I'm also in northern Michigan with off grid camp. Our area is pretty good for hand driven sand point wells. We just pounded one for a cousins camp. 24 foot, water tests great and with hand pump, pipe, deive couplers and sand point we were at just under $600. I too collect rain water, I think gardens thrive more on rain water than my 46 degree well water. Subbed and enjoying your content!

walk your land by the cabin //put a well pint down you find a under ground stream //I put in 5 well points 1/14 pipe // my driver was 4 foot long pipe 3 inch and I weld a steel block at 1 end //my steel block was 3 inch thick block of steel as my driver pipe over the well point //this will drive the well point down

I had an auncle who had slick set up in New mexico. He put like telephone poles by his windmill and mounted a water tank on top and ran the pipe to the house. It was just like ciy water at the tap cause of the head pressure., LOL!

love this vid guy's.was thinking you could have at least 4 more tots. doing the math.which would be 4 for the gardens. the rest for yourselvesl linked in where you have tots now. . you could also get a few where you were orginaly as you have buildings there to catch garden water. with out too much extra effort. phil

Seems like one of the most important thinks to talk about is winter. No. Michigan gets darn cold. So what do you do for ,maybe. 5 to 6 months?

I saw someone else bury a tank underground so they had water in the winter that wouldn’t freeze. Thought that looked like a good idea. I have 1 tote now at our land that I bring water from home to fill. I only have a small shed to catch water for now.

If you could position properly, I would dedicate a tote to micro water your garden plants with a pinhole drip hose grid. The tubing and fittings are dirt cheap. Great video!

Have you looked into having a drain trap that has a drain plug on it ... to have the rain water to pass through first.. Can you put in a cistern as an optional storage .. multiple storage

FINDING the right place for your well point //this gets tricky , take 2 steel close hanger ,cut off the hooks //now bend 1 end into a 90deg . with 1 end 4 inch long and other end of 90deg the other end of wire close hanger 7 to 8 inch long //now comes the best part , in both hands hold the 4 inch bend over your hand onto your baby finger in your hand LET IT REST ON TOP OF YOUR BABY FINGER ON INSIDE OF YOUR HAND //resting on top of your baby finger in right hand and 1 in your left hand and walk slow , when they cross //dig a hole 3 feet deep at that spot . //now fill the hole with water and start ,--driving down your well point //set up pipe 4 foot at I time //use 15 or 16 feet of pipe to start keep the hole filled with water , drive pipe down ---now when the WATER in your hole, is gone --STOP DRIVING YOUR POINT //YOUR IN . PUT HAND PUMP ON 1 1/4 PIPE AND PUMP OUT WATER //GOOD LUCK

I WOULD THINK THE BLACK PLASTIC COVERS ARE BETTER THAN PAINTING THEM. THE PAINT WOULD LEACH INTO THE PLAST TANK, AS YOU STATED HOW THE CHEMICALS WOULD!!!

@@OffgridwithJayandJen I dug mine with a hand auger from Amazon. Then buy 4 - 5’ pieces of 3/4” galvanized water pipe that you can screw onto it and keep going deeper with it. That is a lot cheaper and a lot easier than a sand point and hammering, lol . I hit water at 10’ and went down another 9’ for a total of 19’. Took me about 5 hours to do it

Very cool! What do you do to winterize the totes and ensure you have water in the winter?

kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHLLZXmAeamVbas This is what we do in the winter for water. We just drain the tanks once the freezing temps set in and do the snow melt.

Nice guys, will watch the setup of how you hooked it all up. Right now we have just been hauling water and it's been a pain but we just now got the camper on the land and it all takes time. I do have a question, how do you keep the tanks from freezing and busting in winter? Do you just empty them all? I know I seen you melt snow but wondering how you handle the tanks for winter.
