I would like to have a steam locomotive with 2-8-6 BERLIN TYPE because if the berkshire could outrun a mikado, I think an improved steam locomotive of today could outrun a diesel. I saw a KZbin video about what a futuristic steam locomotive would look like if diesels didn't take over.

@@NicholasSpisak I would love to have either a Berkshire because of the poler express 😂 or a Northern! Thanks for watching Nick!

Actually Lima had a proposal on the drawing board, and it was done after the Alleghenies had proven themselves! The Lima Locomotive history has the data, and Trains had an article on it,during the 1970's! Anyway, there was a basis for the design! Thank you 😇 😊!

Yes, It was a 4-8-6 based upon the Lima C&O J3A 4-8-4 but with a six wheel trailing truck. I've seen a photo where they even did a mock up using a C&O 4-8-4 but airbrushed in a larger trailing truck.

Tall tale spun from the Greenbriar/Chessie Special project. Though UP has almost brought everything the project proposed to fruit there may never be a Modern Coal firing steam locomotive on the mainlines ever again which was the kind of purpose for the project cause Diesel/fuel prices in the early 80's were insane to their standards and big coal was wanting an old faithful customer back. Though I do believe the locomotive was proposed this never ever saw anything out side of paper. the three axle truck even at one point was proposed with at the time standard Diesel electric three axle motor truck. they were drawing up plans for potential locomotives and the committee shelved a lot of the ideas. They did get funding to acquire and modify a Northern/Greenbriar class locomotive which that locomotive went to pull the Chessi steam special and was later side lined at a museum, the system for controls was later extracted and replicated in UP's steam program and 4014 is working on a new improved version of that system that allows for PTC.

Thank you so much for the story! Sorry that I didn't get a response back to you very quickly, I am currently trying to figure out a way to organize all the stories so that I can get them done in order and at the moment the only way for me to do that is to not respond to the comment so it stays in the haven't responded section. Otherwise it will end up buried in other comments that aren't stories. Anyway I hope you understand, I am just starting work on the video and it will probably be out sometime within a couple of weeks 🤠

@TrainBandit i actually meant to say Lima instead of Baldwin but yes! They proposed the design in 1949 I believe, I think only the C&O were interested but none were ordered. It's also rumored that CB&Q 5601 had a 6 axle trailing truck fitted as an experiment but there's no evidence supporting it.
