I have another so in 2004 csx commissioned ge and emd to build a loco together ( kinda wierd but whatever) what the two came up with was the sd94acw a 6850hp behemoth of a loco csx ordered 1 and tested it in coal service and it proved successful so csx ordered 99 more units with the first thirty (including the demonstration unit)into ac60cw yn2 and the rest in yn3 the locos would combine elements of the dash-9 ac44cw and sd90mac like the cab of the dash-9 and the radiators of the sd90mac and the fuel tanks of the ac44cw the unit would wiegh 455000 pounds have 210000 starting and 198800 pounds continues. 30 of the units were retired when everyone's favorite railroad man, E Hunter Harrison, deemed 30 of the engines to be surplus. The 30 that were retired were sent up to ltex for leasing and for shortline use with most of the units being kept on the roster you can still find them roaming around on the rails today leading and trailing on trains mostly coal trains but there not as common as say a gevo or the ac44 rebuilds

I believe this to be a tall tail. I don’t think a boiler of practical size could provide enough steam for that large a locomotive. I can’t remember which railroad had built a 2-6-6-6-2 ? but this failed because the one set of drivers was under the tender and lost adhesion as the tender emptied. The locomotive you pictured is that of a Santa Fe 2-10-10-2 with an articulated boiler. This failed miserably, so badly so that the railroad separated the halves and produced two locomotives from one, so the story goes. Back in the early days of the Central Pacific, they produced a 4-12-0 as I remember, the boiler couldn’t produce enough steam for the cylinders, and the tender could only carry enough water and fuel for about 15 miles or so.
@TrainBandit9 күн бұрын
@@johnbeck3270 I agree 💯! I don't use pictures of the real train though because if I do it's a dead give away so instead I use pictures of a locomotive that similar, in this case a 2-10-10-2. @TrainBandit22 күн бұрын
@@dennispersson9466 yes your absolutely right! Most of the time a locomotive with 8 drive wheels has only 4 flanged wheels(if it is going to have blind drivers, because some don't have any) and most locomotives with 10 drive wheel only has 8 flanged wheel. 10 drivers typically only have the center 2 drivers blind however in this locomotives case it would probably be wise to have 6 drive wheels blind! 😂 If I had to guess this locomotive had a lot of blind drivers! 😂

Hey train bandit got another good story this takes place in late 1979 so the union pacific was looking for a new desiel locomotive to replace thier gtels with ge making the u50 emd making the dd35a and b and dda40x and alco making the c855 but all three had plans to go bigger with these bulids and when i mean bigger i mean way bigger ill start with ge and thier loco they rolled out was called the u70 with 7200 horsepower and riding on a b+b×b+b wheel arrangement while emd built the dd60ax with 7500 hp riding on a d-d+d-d wheel arrangement and alco decided not to do it since sales were dropping and they close thier shop in the early seventys. Ultimately, union pacific decided to go with both units seeing they like both and placed orders for 80 u70s with 30 being a units and the other 50 being b units and the ordered 115 dd60axs 63 being a units and 52 b units and they served on coal trains, unit tank trains, mainfest, etc, etc. They would serve for twenty years with sadly no surivors.they served from october,28,1981 to march, 5, 2003
