This was a really good comparison . You never did a bluey vs audioscape comparison right? I tried searching for it . You think the bluey is even brighter or just more saturated? Btw you remember what mic was used for vocals? I’m trying to decide for a vocal chain . A is brightest but also sounds bigger than the F to me . You know what mix I love the vocals on? Meant to live by switchfoot. I guess I’d go for an A on that track , though I am looking at a 251 type microphone , so that may be too bright . I also feel like a distressor can kind of do an 76a type of grit but be a lil darker and fuller . I need a great chain to mix in with big electric guitars

I have the 76D. I find it aggressively cool. For vocals, I use the meter to let me know how much and where to dial in the amount of input. The 1176 has a “fixed” threshold. Therefore, you raise the input until you hit the desired amount of compression on the meter. For vocals I try not to hit above -5 dB of compression. On the 76D that happens very quickly… I mean… it is so aggressive that I barely hit the input before I reach -5 dB. Then I adjust the output to send the appropriate amount of compressed signal. If I am belting a loud vocal, it will occasionally bump it to -7 dB. That’s ok, but you will feel those transformers working. As you mentioned, it is about how it causes the vocals or instrument to sit in the mix. That’s where it earns its money… It brings every nuance of the vocals to the front of the mix. Great video! Thank you to both of you for the very helpful comments. I have two 1176A's with stereo-link that I built (Hairball Audio) and use them primarily on bass and acoustic guitar, and like them very much. I was never able to do a side-to-side comparison with the D and F, so this is great, even though I know each brand and build will have it's own unique F.E.T. curve and transformer sonic characteristics. I have read that the 1176A tends to be noisier than later iterations, due to earlier circuit design, but haven't felt it is very noticeable with my units unless I really need to crank up the make-up gain to a high level for settings that I would not commonly use. I wonder how the s/n compares between the A, D and F from AudioScape, even subjectively? I may be interested in adding a D or F sometime in the future.

D is the smoothest. Blue stripe is brighter. F is pretty balanced, like a middle ground between the three.

The F seems to be the best option, middle ground compressor that could potentially be used on everything. If one was to only buy one compressor, that would be the best choice in my opinion.

That’s true. Also, the F is the cleanest. The A saturates very quickly. The revision F was one of the first made for this exact reason with different parts. Revision F has the least amount of harmonic distortion of all the revision.

Every unit has its mission, sounds good. I would like to know how much noise there is when passing kicks or snares trough. How much nonise is there in the "gaps". I don't know if my UA 1176 is borken or if this is just the behaviour of these units. Been reading in forums for days.

Halfway thru the vid but i have to say to my ears the blue stripe has the best overall sound and transietn response. I like the blackface and black stripe but the blue stripe just sounds best to me. Great video so far!
