Sailed my 1988 C&C 30 from Vancouver to Alaska then back down to Santa Barbara and then across the Pacific to New Zealand. Then across the Indian to Cape Town. Not bad for a boat designed for the Great Lakes!

!n 1987, I purchased a new C&C 30 Mark 2 hull number 122 while living in Toronto. Brought it with me when I transfered to the U.S. and kept in at Dillions Creek Marina in Toms River NJ and sailed it on Barnegat Bay. Sold it in 2000. We spent every weekend on it. Loved every minute!

When people talk C&C 30 they talk the Mk I. There was no need to go into the others, there is one 30, the others rode coat tails. The C&C 30 MkI needed no changes. It also isn't a larger 27. It loves 20 kts...when everyone else is heading home mine is heading out. I've sailed it it 54 kts (recorded by Halifax traffic) solo... they tracked me. If they told me to take it across the Atlantic tomorrow I wouldn't bad an eye. 15 years on this one and about 40000 charted and logged nautical miles on it. When we vacation on it I'm still solo, because no one touches a thing. The Mk II and Mega are no where near the boat. Neither is a Pearson 30, Bristal 30. As for the Alberg 30, they track Ok, good in sea, but won't run hard out of weather...and wet. Also slow and bitchy down wind. I can stomp most 33-35 upwind in 20 it's with everything up. My main is 12 ounce, working jib 11 ounce, 135 Genoa 8 òunce. I've sailed on just about every 30 on the go...they may be pretty, but they are not as stiff. I fix, sail and repair them, engines as well. A retired doc, retired at 39 and sailed ever since. As for survey...I'm harder on inspection than any surveyor I've ever met. The 30 Mk I wont race unless she gets her 20 kts....then she will stomp. She's a sea boat and one has crossed the North Atlantic with 3 major storms on the nose. You didn't include it because you don't know any better. You know it, I know it. Nice read on the C&C photoablum site.

Right on. Nice report from a knowledgeable and experienced owner. Thanks for sharing this. I think I watched videos on your KZbin channel before I bought my own 1981 C&C 30 Mk. 1, and they were a factor in my purchase decision! One thing that has disappointed me a bit on my own example (compared with the custom-built, cold-molded sloop that it replaced) is its light air performance. We show our heels to most boats up to 35 feet or so once the wind gets above 8 knots or so. Below that windspeed however, we get passed by a lot of lighter and smaller boats. I bought mine because I wanted a weatherly, solid boat, and got that, but once the wind really peters out, you will get where you are going faster by just turning on the iron genoa than by trying to eke out the last know of boatspeed with everything flying. Don't get me wrong, these are fast boats in the right conditions, and handle beautifully - they are responsive to helm and sail trim, and tack on a dime.

So at 4:39 you are talking about after race gatherings on a C&C 30 and showing a Catalina 30..... Which strangely enough is shown in my marina in Maryland. Had the photographer walked two more steps out on the pier and taken that picture, my Catalina 320 would be in the background...... I see Afternoon Delight every weekend on my way out to my pier finger. What a strange thing to find......

I like my Canadian made Ticon 30.... heavier than c-c and 11' beam, over 6' of headroom down below........only about 35 made ...so not a lot of people know about them...and stable and fast , I often give my friend in their Beneateau 33 a proper view of my stern ..... even with their folding prop...

I've always admired the CandC and thank you for the commentary. If we stay in the confines of 27 to 33 you will have endless material. And in the time frame of 1970 to 1990 the true Golden Era of sailing for your everyday man. One of my personal favorites and I've owned is the Pearson 10m cannot say enough about Bill Shaw's designs

I had that boat as well, loved it to death, could damn near sail directly into the wind. Easy to singlehand. Fast, but with decent accommodations. My only complain was it was a bit tender, and didn't traverse the short chop of the Chesapeake Bay well..... Also less than ideal accommodations for my then new and growing family.

Could you do a post on keels, fin, long, cutaway forefoot versions. What to look for when inspecting. When to know it needs to be rebedded. What Differences between bolt-on and encapsulated. What to expect on keel longevity when buying a boat more than 20-30 years old. Etc, etc, etc,. Thanks. I think your channel is the best when discussing top 5, top 10, best cruiser, worse sailor, etc. Been sailing since the mid 80s, but still learning a thing or two from your channel.

You probably built my 1981 C&C 30 Mark 1 then. Mine has a very poorly designed propane locker, which was basically just a fibreglass bin attached to the underside of the deck moulding before it was attached to the hull. The locker lid was then just cut out of the (balsa cored) seat material, and not set up with proper drainage the way the seat lockers were. So if the lid got water penetration (as mine did), repairing and resealing it proves to be a nightmare. This is the only significant design/build fault that I found with my own example, which came with a very nice 2 cylinder, 15 HP Yanmar diesel. Mine also came set up from the factory with a wheel and binnacle. The binnacle makes for a nice mounting location for the compass, autopilot and chartplotter, BUT the cockpit was basically designed for a tiller, with the traveller just forward of the wheel,, and no cutouts abeam of the binnacle. This means that skipper has to step up and over the cockpit benches to get around the binnacle to access the main or genoa sheets. This makes tacking "interesting" when sailing single-handed.

Thank you for paying the proper respect to the C&C 30 MK I. I've owned and raced HIN 30007972 (hull 79, built 1972) for nine years. I can carry full sail to 25 kts. while the competition reefs at 20 or less. I've had races in stiff breezes where I've beat the fleet by three minutes in a half-hour race. But in light air, I get dropped by lighter boats. I've weighed mine on truck scales and she's 8682 pounds with nothing aboard but one anchor and rode, and a full gas tank. Her racing weight with crew is nearly 10,000 pounds. I've fitted mine with an asym on a retractable sprit and top-down furler, better boom, rigid vang, folding prop, etc. She's a competitive PHRF racer but mind the boat-to-venue match. The 30 MK I is better suited to a heavy air venue than a light air one. And $10K is low for a good 30 MK I. A well-maintained, well-equipped one will be in the $15-$20K range. Also the boat at 9:42 is not a C&C 30.

Now you need to talk about why the C&C 33 is the best 33-footer ever, especially the Mark I, which according to my personal taste is much prettier than the Mark II. It would also present an opportunity to talk about how the 33 came about as a racer/cruiser version of the 3/4 tonner, which was the first design by Rob Ball. My understanding is that the 3/4 tonner was such a success that customers demanded a racer/cruiser version, and the rest is history. Thanks for all the good work you do. You are among my "top 5" favorite sailing channels.

Would love to hear his take on the Kerie' Elite 30. Owned one and raced it for years but could never get the boat to sail to it's rating. My appeals that the cast iron keel vs a lead keel fell on deaf ears of the local PHRF raters since the weight was identical. The boat was very tender and in flat water with winds under 10 we did OK. Anything more than that we were sailing for fun. BTW -- I guy had a Omega 36 (I believe made in Sweden) that owned us in any sort of wind. The boat could literally walk through our lee...more than a little demoralizing.

@mmullaley

I'll say something about that. I have a C&C 30, 1976, I did a refit in 2007, full deal. I'm pretty handy and know guys that are handier. After it was done I had a guy who is a marine architect and a marine engineer do the survey. He told me if I ever want to sell the boat to let him know. When I bought the boat it had a survey....from a US Coast Guard Retiree....I had it trucked to my yard for the refit. I wouldn't take it across the harbour. I'll tell you what, you want a survey have a proper survey and not one of these guys that took an evening course. I don't protest to be an engineer, but anything I do on the boat is over engineered....that has included rigging, chain plates, portholes etc....guess what I kept...the atomic 4 ...apparently it doesn't blow up, it just pushes the boat at 6 kts and has for 46 years. I've put over 50000 nm on the boat single handed and banged her through 6 meter seas on a few occasions, when it was less prudent to run for land into shallow water. I didn't buy the boat by accident, I knew what I was getting.

I got my C&C 30MK1 as my first sailboat, to both learn to sail and to learn how to work on a boat. It was completely gutted with no cabinetry and the Atomic 4 in pieces, in cardboard boxes. It has served the purpose incredibly well and I love taking her out for a solo day sail whenever I can. However, I retire in two years and want to circumnavigate and the 30MK1 is not a liveaboard boat. It would be great for a weekend or maybe a week, but the lack of amenities (adequate head, shower, refrigeration space, etc) would, in my opinion, prevent it from even being used for wintering over in the Bahamas. Love the boat, but want bigger later.

I'm afraid I must disagree. I owned an Olson 9-11s (a very rare 30 footer...only 26 made)for over 30 years. Designed by Carl Schumacher and built by Pacific Yachts in Calif, the Olson was 3k lbs lighter than a C&C, Had the room of 35 footer and sailed like a Laser. She was a beast upwind and could out point any C&C. My wife and I sailed her all over the great lakes and it was a great racing boat. The huge cockpit was large enough for a crew of 6 and was a great location for evening cocktails. It was a blast to sail and she always got me home. Sadly, I had to sell her due to health reasons.

Boats are boats and we are bias. A great boat on the lakes may not be a great boat in the ocean. I get my lakes days and I get the days the waves take the wind out of the sails....I'll stick with my C&C 30....over a 35 MK 1 as well. She won't race worth shit in light air but give her 25 kts leave it all up and go.

Did you say salon? Well, I guess you do have a nice hair cut. All of my boats had saloons. Granted that doesn’t sound ‘oh soooo POSH’, but it is more enjoyable for drinks and socializing than waiting around for your hair to be done.

😮 im looking at a C&C 24 I think fully rigged and ready to sail plus trailer for a asking price of 3,200. Or best offer only 5 minutes down the street. Is that a good first boat? It's a sloop

What is your opinion of Water length to OAL differences? Looking at yt videos I see other channels that make the point that 30ft boat with 20ft waterline means you are paying for a 30ft boat with a smaller living area... the water line being the actual living area. My question is this, what difference does this make in how it sails?

This time I have to disagree with the notion of smaller older boats. Must avoid! Sure they're cheap for new entrants but it seems the industry needs new chumps so they'd buy these off of the previous chumps who figured out what a mistake it was!!! In my personal belief and experience there are absolutely boats that become "too small, too boring, big mistake" very quickly ... Unless you're "loner sailor" sure, but I love the socializing aspect of the sport which you really struggle to do on older smaller boats!
