I work wilderness Search and Rescue, so we go deep into forrest and swamps. Needless to say we are limited to what we carry on operations or training. We stopped using Military MREs since they are ONLY shelf stable for 3 years/10 if deep frozen. And they are very expensive and heavy. We carry the three main brands mountain house, Backpackers and Wise. I go with Mountain house for taste and Appeal. But one thing to note is this, pay attention to KCal, nutritional values and for us who burn Kcal like crazy Sodium is important. We noticed that when we got Arctic certified( Alaska in winter ) we gad to eat 2x 2 person meals since walking in snow shoes and dragging sleds we would go into a state of starvation still. These meals are great for 3-7 day treks but extreme extended treks you need more in fuel. For the preppers out there i recomend double up on these meals, consider more salts and pepper for taste. Also consider a source of Vitamin supplements since these meals are limited and not very fortified. Basically get smart on what we humans need to survive and a bit more to actually handle exercise.

Good information. A couple of things and a comment. Freeze drying is destroys water soluble vitamins. They may add some later, or take a multivitamin. Citric acid is NOT MSG - but cheap citric acid made from corn can have MSG in it as a biproduct. And there the comment comes in -- if you have food allergies, sensitivities, or other dietary restrictions you do need to be careful. I like my Harvest Right because I can do it for my family and get it right (though I am still learning).

Good video. I agree with you 100% about eating them while out camping or whatever, to really be able to appreciate what they are. It reminded me of when I was in the service back in the 80's and we'd go to the PX to buy food before an FTX. I remember a buddy of mine saying, geesh, nothing looks good here now, but a few days out in the bush and you wish you had bought everything at the PX cause now it all looks and tastes great, and he was right. Keep up the great work.

I got the small Harvest Right for $1500 or so, and wish I got the bigger ones. It's not just freeze drying for long term storage. I freeze dry leftovers as well, and almost all of my snacks are freeze dried (you can freeze dry candy like skittles and milk duds and they turn out great, not that I eat much candy). A lot of people balk at the cost, but I've recouped that cost in 6 months. And it's weird that we balk at a $1500 FD, but most preppers have no issue with a $1500 rifle. Instead of paying $1500 for your 3rd or 4th AR or AK, I'd suggest getting a FD instead. It's going to be much more valuable to you than expanding your gun collection; you can only fire one gun at a time.

Thanks CP... a very good comparison between these two companies' meals. I've tried some of both. I think I am with you on all aspects of each. You inspire me... I think that I will try a test on myself for about three months. I'd really like to see what a short term test of nothing but these meals (with a daily supplement high in minerals and vitamins, of course) might do to/for my overall health. I don't think I have seen/heard of anyone doing this. I like the Mountain House the most. But Backpacker's Pantry has things to offer that MH does not. I'll probably try a mix of them then. I can do this.... back in Germany in 1984, I ate nothing but MREs for 8 months straight (not because I wanted to, mind you). I'm still alive too!

mountain house is actually pretty good. I used to take mountain house entrees on field ops in the Marine Corps cuz I got sick of MREs. A jetboil, some water, and you can have a pretty decent meal. Also, mountain house tends to weigh a LOT less than an MRE, which is really important when you might be walking with it on your back 10 to 20 miles a day.

One thing I don't get is why the packaging is so big. If I'm going on a 3+ night hike I will take one of these bags but put the rest of the meals in ziolocks. Saves weight and room.

I_Kintobor I have a Harvest Right and do some of my own freeze drying. Much of the stuff I cook in the stir fry mode tastes almost identical after freeze drying and rehydrating. Currently I find the meat is a bit tougher (adult kids did not notice) and I am going to work on that. Higher fat canned foods freeze dried do taste different.

There have been some longtime meal selection standbys in this industry... of the mainstream availability brands Mountain House is my choice. Two meals I like on river trips or when I get the calls to perform remote wilderness on-water rescue and recovery here in Alaska is the Chicken Breast Mashed Potatoes pouch and Biscuits 'n Gravy pouch. These are tasty, very stable in package, hold heat for quite a while, not too sloppy, and something many do not consider... one heck of a hand or foot warmer while its re-hydrating. Looking for winter sleeping calories... the Chicken and Rice variations seem to have highest calories.

@@PlayingWithFireOutdoors Yep!!! Tried several. They are excellent. One of my regular favorites from PEAK is 'Sweet Pork & Rice'. 800 calories per pouch!!! Biscuits & Sausage Gravy is also great. 1100 Calories per pouch!!! I still have some of the 'game-meals' and 'Granolas' set aside. It is becoming more available now --- so good on Peak Refuel. We have a company here in Alaska making commercially available freeze dry food... however, it is very expensive, typically small pouch, (ie. smaller specialized entree's) and not quite practical enough to be mainstays.

I am interested in freeze dried for use on a "ultra-light" racing sailboat where every pound counts. I've found that food which is palatable at home is excellent at sea and food which is only OK at sea is horrible at the kitchen table. One aspect of the freeze-dried is most of them are kind of sticky and mushy; undesirable at home, OK for camping, and almost necessary on a heeled and bouncing boat.

Having brought that to your attention I would also like to say that I have been listening to you and watching your videos for several years and usually I like and appreciate the information you have to offer. It Is not my intent to be negative nor condescending in any way. This is merely a suggestion but I think most folks would appreciate........ thank you!!

Tried Mountain House and Peak Refuel chicken Alfredo. The peak wasn’t as rich tasting, but the mountain house left me gut ache for a bit (~30 minutes). Peak was more expensive, but also had lower sodium and cholesterol per calorie, while it contained more protein. Don’t get me wrong, MH is still good and a better bang for the buck, but I would need more sample cases to really pick which is better on a meal to meal basis. Honestly, knowing what they are helps to put expectations in line with reality. If you’ve ever had Hamburger helper, it’s about in line with how they tasted.

also when they're that flat what you have to do is on the bottom you have to literally pull them out a little bit so that you square them pull them out push him in until it is become squared and then you can add hot water to it I've had this experience with other package goods that are in the same manner years ago, you just have to know the proper way of handling it so that you get them in that balance that I called cup/bowl shape can't even call it a cup cuz it's usually too big bowl sort of thing... If you read any of my messagesplease bear in mind I'm using voice to text and it's really giving me problems it's not writing things down to where they're supposed to and I can't correct them.

Sometimes, it comes to to small key details like how flat a packet of food is. MH is tastier, sure, but that never was a huge deal for me. The bulge at the bottom of each bag annoys me to no end, though. But BP tends to pack flatter when I stash it in my rucksack's meal pouch alongside other packets. Stupid detail, I know but it matters.

you're right about that the smaller it is the easier it is to get the individual taste out of food it has to also do with the fact that some things are lost when either driving or freeze-drying when drying foods you still contagious still has some of the flavor of the original when freeze-drying it the process can take away a portion of the flavorand that can't be helped so it's always good to have your own spices with you to add that flavor back into it also makes it feel like your own meal me and even if you add let's say a little bit of driedchives for example in an egg one of these egg ones that you can get and maybe add a little bit of dry tomato paste you know the dry tomato stuff in it then stir it around your egg will taste fantastic even though it's been freeze-dried why because you've added a personal touch a flavor that is all your own and therefore it taste better but hey that could just be my opinion... Everybody has to try it out for themselves.

maybe the difference in date has to do with the quality of the bag too?

All the the backpacking / bug out packets are expensive, but Mountain House tastes best. You definitely want some for a bugout bag even if you packed beans and rice. You need something quick and a moral booster is good. For Bug in / bunker food / camping, Augason Farms is the best value and wins a lot of taste tests. You do need a kitchen or camping kitchen kit for many of the things. Some things like the Mexican kit require an oven and the some baking stuff also does and breads needs needs yeast. Know how to make an oven and yeast? If not chose carefully. You are not footing it with that much, but a bike cart could carry it. Car - > bike - > foot You could also bury it at a bug out location in a waterproof container to dig up in SHTF.

Sidekicks sells sauce pouches, like gravy, alfredo, cheddar, veg broth... They cost less then a dollar each and you can add them to anything for a quick change... Also im suprised you havnt mentioned freeze dries tofu... I dehydrate it myself and so far has passed my 6 year test... Another thing ive been experimenting with is nori sheets... They cost two bucks for a pack of twenty and has 70 grams of protein in repackage. They come dehydrated but the package says they only last two years

I agree with you about it being handy and something you can take with you to workyeah it's a fairly nutritious meal almost as nutritious is making it yourself and then packing it away if you could I mean let's face ityou could make anything and you know like leftovers to put in your pack you wouldn't be taking those what I mean is it beats ramen you know the store-bought in a little kuppy looking thing any day...and if it wasn't expensive and it will crosier and it was not going to cost me an arm and a leg and tax I would be probably buying it.

it could be that it was designed to show you that you could share it with your partner on your backpack trip that you're not going it alone which these days most places recommend you don't go out into the wilderness alone.or it could be there trying to show people who are overweight that you might want to zip it up and eat it later
