There really hasn't been a brand that has been god awful as far as taste except for augison farm banana cereal and their lasagna. But their taste in general is pretty good. I like mountin house, I never tried wise though but yes that price is better and I'm fine with soy here and there. Also I highly recommend Augison farm honey cornbread its the best cornbread for the price.

I work in the disaster response field and often wonder if this would be a viable option for meal distribution to those in need. Though the company I work for is a privately contracted entity that performs multiple task during a disaster food distribution is not one of them and in performing the tasks we are contracted for often come across those who are in desperate need of food and end up giving away our MRE's which we are readily able to replace. Especially here at home, unless you have lived through a flood hurricane tornado or wildfire like those currently burning in California or are there during the aftermath you truly can't grasp how rampant food and water shortage really is. FEMA is a damn disgrace and should never be relied on for any help so I'm wondering if this product is something we could use in our field.

This is one of the best, most researched videos I've ever seen. Cheapest vs. Less Expensive is an excellent starting point. I also appreciate Portion Size vs. Cost; Real Meat vs. (TVP) vegan; Freeze Dried vs. Dehydrated. Price isn't everything as you so succinctly illustrate. The end result is to have shelf-stable food that you can eat when the time comes, that kids will not reject. Let's face it: it's always about the kids, but childless adults are also consumers. Keep up the good work. My neighbors' child has a tree nut allergy, and I have an onion and shellfish allergies. You make it easy for your viewers to make informed decisions. Please keep up your good work.

I worked for Oregon Freeze Dry which makes the Mountain House products. However, I did not work in their food plants in Oregon, I was freeze drying probiotics in a new plant in NY. OFD would send us some of their new product lines to help test and I did not find one I did not like. OFD processing and packaging is second to none. I know- I have worked for several freeze dry and food processing companies. When vacuum sealing the product, the O2's (Oxygen content) is taken very seriously because that has a direct effect on product self life. Though I am no longer with them, I still think very highly of their products because I know their SOP's inside and out and the fact they would rather waste anything that is questionable (100's to 1000's of dollars) than give a customer bad product.

I looked at the ingredients and Wise has fake meat and preservatives. And you need to double the serving size. Any company that has a product called "Noodles with Beef" but has no beef in it is a red flag.
@ForbiddTV
@ForbiddTV 7 жыл бұрын
haywood jeblome You lie. Look again. Wise has two entrees similar to what you speak of. One is called "Noodles with Beef in Mushroom Sauce" and clearly shows freeze dried hamburger listed in the ingredients. The other is called "Savory Stroganoff" and contains no meat, but you will note the.word 'beef' appears nowhere on the label. Some companies will decieve by using the phrase 'beef flavor'. Both Mountain House and Wise contain preservatives as do most all freeze dried brands, and they also are measured by one cup (8oz) as a serving size, just like most other freeze dried brands. If you don't like that, then yes go ahead and double it.

here's a few ideas for surviving any situation 1. Have food stock: 2. Find a shelter: 3. Know the dangers: You have to be prepared for the most common dangers at such point of time to ensure that you are able to make preparations against it. This can be wild animals or the weather or other people depending on the situation you are in and therefore, you have to identify the immediate danger and after that you have to start the preparations to safeguard yourself from these immediate dangers as well to ensure that you are able to face them if at all you come across them. So, whenever you are speaking about survival situations, these 3 are the most basic tips which you have to follow at all points of time and once you are able to follow these simple tips, you can be sure that you would be keeping your family safe and yourself as well from all such types of dangers. (I read these and why they work on Marla Survive System website )

here's some suggestions for surviving any situation You never know when things are going to go bad and that is why it is important that you ensure that you have some knowledge about the survival skills in order to keep yourself and your family safe when things go awry. Most of the people just think that these situations are not going to happen but the truth is that these situations can happen any time and it is not just for the end of the world but you would need such survival skills even in times of natural calamities as well and that is why it is important for you to learn such skills and we would be highlighting 3 of such important skills. 1. Have food stock: You need to understand that in times like these, you need to have a spare food stock and you need to have foodstuffs which can last for a longer period of time like canned food and dry fruits like cashews as well. These would provide you with energy as well as other nutrients which are required for surviving as well. You need to ensure that you are having foodstuffs which do not require any additional processing and can be used directly as well. 2. Find a shelter: In times like these having a shelter which can product you from weather as well as other living being is important. If you are out of your home, you have to first and foremost search for a makeshift shelter or you have to think about building one if natural shelters are not available. 3. Know the dangers: (I learned these and the reasons they work from Marla survive system site )

Been using MH products for years. First time was on a camping trip in the early/mid 70s. I keep them as part of my hurricane preparedness kit here in Florida. They came in handy when I was laid-off in December of '08. Lived on one pouch if MH per day for about six weeks or so until the money started coming in. Great stuff!

I knew very little when I started building my food storage, so I spent a pile of money on My Patriot Supply meals - which taste very good but are protein deficient. The other thing, as he pointed out about Wise, is that they count orange drink as a serving. The other issue is that their "servings" are 1/2 to 1/3 the calories of what an adult should have for an adequate serving - meaning a six-month supply is really only a two-month supply. After learning more about food storage, I purchased several cans of freeze-dried meat and eggs to supplement the MPS low protein meals; consequently, the great deal I got on a six-month food supply has turned out to be a bad deal. Lesson learned: I ONLY buy Mountain House now.
@ForbiddTV
@ForbiddTV 6 жыл бұрын
You might want to look into something else (I don't know if I covered this in the video): Find out how common protein deficiency is in your country. Here in the US it is exceedingly rare, in fact when I used to look a people's blood under a microscope I would invariably see protein excess that was making problems in the blood. You might be focusing on the wrong thing...

My worry while looking for Emergency food supply, since I am a diabetic is the sodium content as well as carb count. Main thing I know is that Wise has extremely low sodium versus Mountain Houses brand. One the freeze dried meat entrees most Wise Brands had 2% sodium while the MH brand had anywhere from 48% and higher. If you have high blood pressure as well as being diabetic, all that sodium over the course of eating those day in and day out adds up FAST!
@ForbiddTV
@ForbiddTV 6 жыл бұрын
Really? Although your assertion that the sodium is high on these foods is certainly true, you haven't really looked at the labels. Codes for below MH = Mountain House, WC = Wise Company Both comparisons are for similar menus of one cup (8oz) prepared. Since most Wise entrees do not have meat, I had to use their camping line which does have meat for a fair comparison. Chili Mac w/Beef MH 780mg, WC 960mg Chicken Teriyaki w/Rice MH 660mg, WC 1020mg MH Beef Stroganoff w/Noodles 800mg WC Noodles w/Beef in Mushroom Sauce 890mg Don't be fooled by whoever told you what you thought you knew. If low sodium is important to you I would skip the entrees (although MH has some "low sodium" varieties) and go with the straight fruits and vegetables that generally add no salt. If low carb is important to you, again skip the entrees because almost all of them have either rice or noodles as their base ingredient.

That being said, the Mountain House line is not totally TVP free. FYI - I just picked up one of their "Breakfast Skillet" meals, and TVP is listed as an ingredient in the pork sausage patty breakdown. However, that one item is certainly not enough to change my positive opinion of MH meals. Had it not been for this video I probably wouldn't have looked, but I thought I'd pass on what I found.

Excellent point . . . you really have to compare apples to apples, and to know what is meant by "serving". Serving is not a well defined quantity, and what the seller considers to be a serving might be very different from what a hungry person considers a serving. Also, watch out for empty calories. A lot of these survival packages are a lot of highly refined, nutritionally void, carbohydrates and other empty calories. I would suggest that before anyone buy a lot of any type of survival food, try going one week eating NOTHING but what is in the packs, in quantities they consider to be servings, and see if you think you could really survive a year on it. Try before buying in volume.
@ForbiddTV

Yes, with most companies you would need about double the servings. Sometimes companies will have a packet of powdered drink mix listed as a 'serving'. As you said, empty calories, and no one would be happy with that as one of your meals for the day.

Some of us can't afford to purchase a large enough order to get a better price, yet if we could get a two or 3 package deal a month, as long as we agree to purchase at least 6 months, could they get a better price on the food and the shipping?

There are too many internet dealers selling freeze dried food at cut-throat pricing that it's hard for me to compete especially when they offer free shipping. A big one beyond price is what is the calorie count per serving? I'll pay a bit more to have better flavor and same or higher calories. Now, on chilli mac. Mountain House is 230 calories per 1 cup serving, 575 per pouch. Wise is 260 per cup and 660 per pouch. For the 30 calorie difference I'll still go mountain house for texture and flavor but remember, in an SHTF situation you'll need 2000 calories per day or more if your bugging out/working

I've bought a few wise buckets as a first purchase to stock up and here is my findings. I went through most of the pasta meals and soups as well as the meat bucket. Every pasta dish is runny and many of the noddles often don't cook through even if you let it sit for 15min. Taste was maybe 4/10 (5 = Okay) for the pasta and soups, so it wasn't good but I would finish the whole package. Most of the pasta and soups don't fully cook so if it has beans, expect tuff bits, this includes the noodles so try and let it cook longer and sit for an extra 15min. Yes I followed the directions. I've yet to try the rice or breakfast item dishes. The meat bucket is the best part of the package, I can eat that as a snack. Taste is maybe 6/10 but the meat packages are small, maybe a small serving of cereal in a bowl. There are difference flavors but it basically tastes the same as the "sauce" is slightly flavored water so when you eat the meat, you taste meat (ground beef or chicken) and little flavor of the "sauce". The meat are tiny balls of meat bits and the chicken is cubed chicken, a little dry but it's decent (6/10) so this is ideal to put in something else. Would I buy this again? No I wouldn't if I had the option I would go with MH or do my own food prep. If I had nothing else and maybe budget was a concern, wise is fine it will get you through an emergency, but even during SHTF you might not look forward to eating the wise products but it will fill you up.

While I don't have a problem with TVP generally, I have it in my stockpile along with real meats, I do have a problem with the flavor of Wise foods. It just doesn't taste good to me and I no longer stockpile it. Most of what I had I gave away to new preppers. I do have some Mountain House, but the bulk of my stockpile is either from the LDS store or Augason Farms that I get from Wal-Mart. Those two, plus the foods I've canned are what I've tried and liked.

We have also bought from Honeyville in #10 form TVP products and we like them (as part of our mini prep) as they add value and variety in taste. The vast majority of what we have so far is bagged mountain house. We also supplement with canned goods from the store when we find super sales. I bought some Augason Farms products. Make sure to check on volumes and weights, as they have lots of half empty #10 cans and buckets. Make sure you calculate the actual costs based on weight and volume. A #10 can is 12 cups full. They also don't have mylar bags in their buckets so they can get breached in transport, and shelf life is questionable IMO. Their products are like a cheaper wise. Most of their products also requires cooking. Their vegetable stew blend and cornmeal buckets, were good deals last I checked, and mostly full. Their butter is OK, but not good to fry with. Gluten-Free Black Bean Burger, is good to stretch things as freeze dried meat is expensive. I bought their peppers, onions, egg powder, potato shreds, Peanut Butter Powder, and some other items. I would however recommend Emergency Essentials over Augason Farms products. Their buckets were full to the top and packed in mylar bags, inside the buckets. In terms of just add water meals, Mountain House and Campfire Meals/Daily Bread are good and that is important, because you will need to eat the stuff.

I think maybe the most valuable advise/info I got from this video is 1-Look at the label and ingredients closely. 2- TVP ain't meat.Now personally I like having meat to go along with my other food. I got nothing against vegetables but I don't want to live on a meatless diet. So for me that's valuable info. Plus I'm over 40 so I don't think I need any more soy than I already get out of a can of soup or occasional TV dinner.However I will agree that having something to eat is better than having nothing. I need to get started on some things. Although it's not easy when money is tight. On a side note it took awhile but I finally got the wife to come around to the idea of buying an extra days worth of food when we can. Although I'm getting concerned that she may be starting to forget those lessons. The lessons learnt by a late pay check a time or 2.

Dont compare serving size when doing food comparison , you need to compare the CALORIES PER SERVING and TOTAL CALORIES PER CONTAINER to get a TRUE comparison based on "serving" because one company serving could be alot less calories than another , we live based on calories not servings. The serving method is a trick these companies use to get u to buy them over someone else. Like patriot foods, the claim for example in a month of food supply to have 100 serving lets say ( number injust made up for illustration) but the servings are like 250-350 calories wich is not enough to really live on properly . So take in mind that your age, size and sex and how much calories u should have to live on and get your food storge based on calories needed per day, not serving
@danielc.1169
@danielc.1169 7 жыл бұрын
You will find out that companies that base their monthly food supply based on "SERVINGS" and not CALORIES , that a month will really last you about 15 days if you know your caloring intake based on age and sex. Wich for most men is around 1800-2300 a day
@ForbiddTV
@ForbiddTV 7 жыл бұрын
Daniel Charette I covered much of this in the video, perhaps you didn't see it. If you had three 'servings' a day of these or other brands of these foods you would only be getting about 1000 calories a day.

Good analysis. I eat a ketogenic diet and I'm not a prepper in quite the same sense that you are. Most of the camping/backpacking/preparedness stuff is high in carbs which isn't really good for long term health. That said I do buy a lot of Mountain House stuff, mostly for hiking, backpacking and backcountry camping. IMO the best products out there for that purpose are the Mountain House Military/LRP meals. I've tried a few of the various Wise Food packs including the chili mac and IMO they're substandard. As you say, TVP has nutrients but it's not as satisfying as real meat nor does it taste good. Most of the Wise Food 'entrees' are little different than dried mixes that you could get at a supermarket by Knorr or Lipton. It looks cheaper but it's a false economy IMO.

As others have mentioned, it would be interesting to compare the various brands on a dollars/calorie basis. Serving size doesn't really matter... it's how much energy (and of course nutrients) per dollar that is a good indicator of value. And for what it is worth... my son does a lot of hiking and camping. He prefers Mountain House over Wise... although (his opinion)is that, "...all the breakfast egg dishes are crap..."
@ForbiddTV

CP140405 Problem with the calories comparison is the count can be artificially elevated by just adding more sugars. More calories does not necessarily mean more nutrition.
@CP140405
@CP140405 7 жыл бұрын
True enough... although adding fat would be more effective at adding calories (gram for gram) than sugars... and the relative nutritional value between two servings/meals of comparable caloric content would of course be the basis for another review.
@ForbiddTV
@ForbiddTV 7 жыл бұрын
CP140405 Fat content is a difficult thing to increase with freeze drying. High fat content foods just will not freeze dry properly. The third brand I briefly show in this video (Backpacker's Pantry) addresses this by including a separate fat packet (like olive oil) in with the main entree that you add to and mix in before consumption.

Mountain House and many other companies make low sodium varieties. The taste generally suffers when they do that since higher fat foods are difficult to freeze dry (fats and salts usually improve taste). You can always go with straight fruits or vegetables which usually have no added ingredients.

Your Mother -- Truth, right there. I just checked Amazon, and Mountain House products do contain soy additives in several of their products (I checked the Beef Stroganoff, the Chicken Ala King, and the Chili Mac w/ Beef). Some MH products also contain maltodextrin...At the very least, MH and Wise are using similar ingredients, so bashing one over containing "texturized vegetable protein" (i.e., "soy products"), while insisting that the other does not (even though it clearly spells out that it contains soy proteins in at least three places), is disingenuous, at best. Definitely an advert.
