I know you're half joking because this seems like a tired subject, but it's something that, at least in this very specific niche of short barrels, for short range, when using a suppressor but still supersonic ammo, I have a lot of questions about. I think if you really really want to optimize that you might go with something like 6.8 SPC in a 9 inch barrel, but if we're keeping with regular 5.56 brass and magazines, I'm torn between which caliber to keep next to my bed.

You forgot that it may cause excessive ammunition expense or excessive time lost reloading. You’re going to definitely have one or the other. $1.25/rd for 110gr vmax or $0.35/rd to load the same ammunition. Those are not the cheapest ones that you can find for that load, but it’s what I have seen the last time I looked. I don’t shoot much supersonic.300 blackout. Cleetis McDougall second that; if you could, add 16 inch barrels. Guessing reliability will go to the AK and Suppression will go to the 300 blackout. Love my MCX - the Gemtech One suppressor makes it a joy to shoot. Took two trips to SIG factory for warranty work before it became 100% reliable (kind of shitty). Using subsonic RUAG ammo keeps you under supersonic. Sold my AK and possibly looking to get one again; so a video on the topic would be great.

You mean like 30 caliber loaders have been doing for decades? 308 is the most re loaded center fire cartridge there is. There are many recipes to make a 300 blackOut and you just shoot out of an AR10, the cartridge just looks different. The advantage is when you want to shoot the more powerful 308, you can. Nicely Done. Would like to add, one of the main factors in making 300Blk so effective with shorter barrels and less gassy than 5.56 and x39 is due to the limited case capacity all 300 Blk loadings are using a much faster burning powder. Some of the best loads use magnum type pistol powders and you are achieving 100% burn in 10 inches or less. PLEASE do not confuse 100% burn with optimal barrel length as the gasses are still expanding and providing increased velocity.

My understanding was that 9" was all that was needed to get complete powder burn. That doesn't mean you won't gain velocity with longer barrel lengths, you still have tremendous preasure in the barrel. I think many have confused this with being the best length. The length should be determined by what you are going to do with it. IMHO

I as well - I have settled on the 115gr Lehigh Defense (Controlled Chaos) = Fragmented Bullet - so there is mostly never a big issue of over pentation and going through walls & hitting a family member. I have 6 pre-Loaded 30rd mags for Home SD - each mag contains 20-CC rounds & 8 -194gr Maximum Expansion rounds - placed through out each magazine. Hunting mainly Wild Feral Pigs & other annoying Predators - I choose the 110gr & 120gr TAC-TX. My range is only out to 200yds with my Holosun HS510C - This is Perfect for my needs! -- I don't pretend to be a wanna be sniper - the 300BLK & 200yrd range is ideal for my physical capabilities. Lastly for the Moment SHTF - My son & I have more then we can carry (30round mags) - loaded with a variety of 110gr to 147gr. (What ever we could find over the past 15yrs. We both shoot via 16" barrel - Mine has a 1-7.5 twist.

To be fair the effect of decreased barrel length on 300 BO is less than 5.56. That said, longer barrel pretty much always means more velocity no matter the round.
@AlbertoHernandez-gl8ut
@AlbertoHernandez-gl8ut 4 жыл бұрын
The thing behind 8.5 or 9 is that the round achieves full burn at those barrel lengths but it will still benefit from a longer barrel since the gasses behind the round are still expanding even up to 16 inches

One reason you may want a 16 inch 300 blackout is legal issues. In Florida you can have long guns loaded and openly displayed in your vehicle but pistols must either be on your person or locked in a container. If you want a truck gun in 300 blackout it would have to be locked in a container if the barrel is less than 16 inches. Also, with the pistol brace rule from the ATF all of your 300 Blackout pistols are now illegal or you have to ditch your brace or have to be registered with the ATF.

Talk about a guy who really knows his stuff... excellent video. I own a BCM 9” 300 BLK I use Gorilla’s 110 grain Varmageddon and Hornady’s Black 110 V-Max for self defense, home defense and most other situation along those lines. Subsonic end, Gorillas Silverback 205 grain and Hornady 190 grain Sub-X. Practice ammo is Sellier & Bellot 124 grain FMJ and 200 grain FMJ. Using an AAC 762-SDN-6 suppressor I can say I’ve ever had an issue running any of the ammo mentioned above. Also just in case from my experience mentioned above, the BCM 9” that I own came from Bravo as a 1:7 twist and buffer which I believe is an H1 buffer weight for anyone concerned about not stabilizing and or feeding issues. No issues at all suppressed or unsuppressed. Thank you so much for all your videos and work that you put. We greatly appreciate you my dude!

The recce? I have a BCM recce 9. I totally agree with your comment. I watched some videos today going over buffer weights. They seemed to think if you shoot suppressed the buffer should be an H2 at least. But I haven't had any problems with the H1. I thought about putting in an H2 because they say it'll help some recoil (not that it's an issue) but nothing to do with the cycling using a suppressor. The only issue I've had at all with the gun is because I bought 1k rounds from a guy who loads. Somehow on a few of them after the primer is fired it comes out of the round then gets stuck between the bcg and the lower jamming it up. Other than those shitty rounds it's pretty solid

Adam Huffman 300 yards is really about the limit of any intermediate rifle caliber like 5.56, .300 blk, or 7.62x39 anyway. Honestly, I prefer to cap them all as 200 yard cartridges for an ethical behind the front shoulder kill on a small to medium size adult whitetail deer. Considering the wooded areas I hunt, that’s usually plenty of range. At 300 yards and beyond, I’d rather step up to a true rifle caliber like .308, .30-06, .270, etc. Now, it’s certainly true that deer can be put down with lesser calibers like .17HMR, .22WMR, or even .22LR. You’re talking about critical shot placement into the brain in order to keep a deer from running forever before dieing at that point though. I’m not talking about what can be done especially if it’s taking game for survival. I’m talking about making a clean ethical kill in a non-critical hunting environment.

@Nick 718 While 300 Blackout wasn't intended for longer barrels, it, like all other calibers, do benefit from longer barrels. 6.8 SPC was also designed for CQB, and it achieves that and then some; the ballistics are better than 5.56, 300 Blackout, and 7.62x39. And while we're talking about it, no, 300 Blackout does not out perform 7.62x39; when comparing similar grains, 7.62x39 has more energy than 300 Blackout or 5.56 62 gr green tip at 300 yards.

Where that whole "9 inch is the optimized barrel length" thing comes from is the fact that a 9 inch barrel has the best length to fps ratio. You gain less per inch in any longer of a barrel, and from like 7 to 8 or 8 to 9 has the biggest increase in fps. That's what I remember reading from a barrel manufacturers website.
@MysterThree
@MysterThree 8 ай бұрын
Same concept with 556, better out of a longer barrel but not much lost going from 16 to 11.5 below that it’s a mobile flashbang launcher shooting 22 mag, a bit better out of 20 but you only gain a couple hundred fps for an extra 4 inches of barrel, which 20 really to me at least is most useful in a dmr/spr using green tips, besides that may as well go short, just my hot take.
@elmexicanoforlive
@elmexicanoforlive 7 ай бұрын
I think you mean 16”, bellow that most ammo doesn’t reliably fragment unless you start getting into specialty ammo. 11.5 is only good for CQB type engagement with a suppressor. The concussive blast from such a short barrel sucks if there is anyone besides you. It may not sound like a lot of difference but a muzzle break shoots out gases to the side of the shooter. So to the people around you it will make a difference, unless you run a suppresor. 16” is the middle ground when the 5.56 was designed for a 20” barrel. It’s the best overall length for 5.56. Anything shorter you are better off with 300BO.

I agree with everything you said. I’d say, most people who say it’s optimized for the shorter barrels are comparing it to the 5.56 round. I think if you compare the 300blk against itself. It’s silly to say it’s optimized for shorter barrels. But if you compare it vs a 5.56 in a 7.5-14” barrel. I think the 300 out performs it. I’d like to see the comparison on those 2 rounds. Great info on bullets and performance in each barrel.

I bought an AR earlier this year (300 BLK with a 16' barrel). People in an AR group I was in on FB were talking trash about the barrel length. From what I understand about this caliber and why people buy shorter barrels is because they generally use a can. I have no intention to buy a suppressor. I cared about having something that packs a helluva punch up close and can still pack that punch at some distance. I also caught a really good deal on the gun.

I was trying to decide which barrel length to go with, I think I'll go with 10.5" for that extra umph. Mainly a home defense pistol but I want to be able to cover some distance for fun.

Not much "umph" from the 7.5 up to the 10.5: in supers only ~90 ft/s and ~90 energy improvement, or a 4% and 8% gains respectively. No difference in heavy bullets. Is 3 inches worth it? If you like shooting subs, the 7.5 and 12.5 barrels seem to be the best options depending on whether length/maneuverability is most important, or maximizing your subsonic/supers speed are most important. And the 12.5" gives you a 17% improvement in energy when shooting supers. If you want "umph," I think she will tell you that 2 extra inches means alot to her...
