Many who like sci-fi movies consider 2010 a very good and underrated sequel. It's also written by Arthur C. Nice list. But Massively disagree that BR2049 has some of the “best HDR out there”. IMO it’s a perfect example of one of the worst uses of HDR: -I think it barely goes over 200nits. -WCG is nonexistent + doesn’t stretch into bt2020. -Deakins the DP is also notorious for being against HDR. It’s not far from KnivesOut - which was basically identical to its SDR Blu and mastered in an HDR container. BR2049 had loads of potential for great HDR but really fell short.

You are correct, Jeff; My Fair Lady (1964) is a Technicolor film. The Red Shoes (1948) is not a musical, though it definitely is a picture that features dancing and is done in a very musical style. Denzel Washington actually won his first Academy Award for Glory (1989).
@smsstuart6 ай бұрын
" _My Fair Lady_ (1964) is a Technicolor film". Yes, but... that really doesn't mean anything. 'Technicolor' has several different meanings, depending on the timeline. It can refer to (1) an origination process; (2) it can refer to a printing process; and (3), it can simply refer to a film laboratory. And in reference to (1) & (2), there are two types of Technicolor: Technicolor Process No. IV: Three-Strip; and Technicolor Process No. V: Dye transfer prints from chromogenic negative ([most-likely] Eastman Color negative film). Since virtually no current-day BD's or 4K's are sourced from release prints, what matters in the world of Technicolor is (1) - the origination process - specifically the use of the Technicolor *3-Strip Camera* - and access to the three camera negatives (Red-Green-Blue). _The Red Shoes_ is a perfect example, as the 2009 restoration (from which the 4K release was mastered) utilized the OCN's as the source - for better or worse. So, to Jeff's point, the 'quality' of the color capture is different than what is achieved thru the use of Eastman Color Negative Film. And when HDR-grading is added to the 3-Strip negatives, the image as seen in the digital (4K) domain can really shine. As far as _My Fair Lady_ is concerned, that film was shot in 65mm, using Eastman Color Negative Film. "Color by Technicolor" in this case, actually has two meanings: It was the laboratory that both processed the negative and [originally] supplied the release prints. The 70mm release prints used Dye Coupler technology, and the 35mm reduction prints [were most-likely] Dye Transfer prints. The color 'quality' of the 35mm vs. the 70mm prints differs as one set used Dye Transfer technology rather than Dye Coupler technology - giving a different meaning to 'Color by Technicolor'. Realistically, the 35mm prints used Technicolor Process No. V, and the 70mm release prints were simply Eastman Color - loosely labeled as "Color by Technicolor", as the film laboratory of record. As for the 4K release of _My Fair Lady_ - according to Robert Harris, who did the original restoration work: " _Image is derived from 8K scans (down-razzed to 4K) from approximately 150 minutes of original 65mm negative and 21 minutes of 65mm black & white separation masters_ ". But at the end of the day, it's still Eastman Color.
@garrettbays69426 ай бұрын
@smsstuart I was just going off if the credits in the film, especially since if it were filmed in Eastmancolor, the credits would have stated as such; though some Eastmancolor films never credited the color process, which always confuses me. Eastmancolor seems to be the only process that did that in films; if a film were shot in Technicolor, Deluxe, Rank Film Laboratories, or Metrocolor, it was often credited. Eastmancolor would sometimes be credited, and sometimes not. As detailed as your reply is, I would just still rather say that My Fair Lady is a Technicolor film since the credits label it as such. If it said Prints by Technicolor, well then it would be apparent that it wasn't filmed in Technicolor.
@smsstuart6 ай бұрын
@@garrettbays6942 I didn't wish to add any confusion, and would agree with you, if the credit states: "Color by Technicolor" - then Technicolor it is; and as you stated.. _"...that My Fair Lady is a Technicolor film since the credits label it as such."_ I brought this up merely to clarify the process(es); and as you can see, there were many. You stated: _"if a film were shot in Technicolor, Deluxe, Rank Film Laboratories, or Metrocolor..."_ The only problem with that statement is - the only films *_shot_** in Technicolor* used the Technicolor 3-Strip camera, PERIOD; otherwise a film was 'shot' using Eastman Color, Fujicolor, [God forbid] Ansco Color, etc. film. Technicolor played fast and loose with its name following the retirement of the 3-Strip camera thanks to their continued use of Dye Transfer (IB) Printing and Eastman Kodak's development of the Eastman Monopack 35mm negative stock usable in regular, 35mm cameras. Following the era of the Technicolor 3-Strip Camera, in America, it was almost guaranteed Eastman Color Negative film was utilized for origination, and the laboratories (De Luxe, Metrocolor, Technicolor, [don't forget WarnerColor], DuArt, etc.), processed the negatives, per Eastman's specs., and produced release prints that 'may' have carried a particular *look* indicative of the film laboratory where the work was done.
@garrettbays69426 ай бұрын
@smsstuart You mentioned WarnerColor; I found out from Leonard Maltin that WarnerColor was just a trade name for Eastmancolor. For that matter, Ansco, after its color process was modified, would become Metrocolor. MGM used Eastmancolor for a few years after Ansco, and then when Ansco became Metrocolor, that was their primary color process, though they would use Technicolor for their 70mm epics like Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1959), King of Kings (1961), and Mutiny on the Bounty (1962). I noticed that Paramount would use Metrocolor quite a bit in the mid-'70s up until the early '80s.
@smsstuart6 ай бұрын
@@garrettbays6942 WarnerColor = Eastman Color - yes, it certainly was. I really don't know what film lab(s) they used to do their work, but a few of their WarnerColor films had titles reading: WarnerColor - Prints by Technicolor. (I presume those were dye transfer prints). The story I heard was Warner Bros. missed procuring the rights to the Hypergonar (anamorphic) lens from Henri Chrétien by one day - 2oth Century-Fox being the 'victors'. Jack Warner was pissed and went about coming up with another anamorphic system, using Zeiss-made anamorphic lenses - the system *WarnerSuperScope* - being identical in every way with what Fox [ultimately] settled on by the time _The Robe_ was released in September, 1953. But it was not to be. Following a war of words between Darryl Zanuck at Fox and Jack Warner, the WarnerSuperScope system was abandoned. Warners passed their Zeiss contract to Fox and the only film made with the Zeiss lenses, _The Command_ was Warner Bros. premiere engagement, but was released under the CinemaScope banner. Undoubtedly, Warner Bros. wanted a complete system they could call their own, but 2oth Century-Fox ended up with the _premiere_ anamorphic system, along with directional, 4-Track Magnetic Sound. Paramount developed VistaVision, and in 1954 MGM would begin work with a 'little' optics company - who was among many optical houses supplying much-needed anamorphic projection lenses to theatres - to develop a 70mm camera system to compete with Cinerama. The system was called _MGM Camera 65 _*_The Window of the World._* It would later be known as *Ultra Panavision 70.* It's a specialized business, with a lot of proprietary methods, many of which have been lost as those who 'made the magic happen' have died-off.

Yes 4K discs are great - when they work. But about half of mine have turned out to be faulty or completely unplayable after only a couple of viewings. What to do? I've been forced to double dip on movies that I simply must have in my collection, like Apocalypse Now and LOTR trilogy and Alien. I've stopped buying new 4K releases. Regular blurays have lasted me for years.

@@ROBLOX-1gv7ej2j what do you mean? I’ve had flat screens since 2007. TVs have gotten better. Oled tvs produce a far superior image. I’m not saying 4K is a major advantage over 1080p, but it’s still an advantage. The big difference is wide gamut and hdr implementation. Along with brightness and black levels. If I watch a 4K HDR vs a 1080p SDR Bluray the 4K is clearly better, and a much better experience. Besides, they don’t even make 1080p tvs anymore.
