I've been shooting Canon since the 70's and have quite a collection of FD manual glass. Thanks to the Sony A7R series, I've been able to use them once again. I was quite surprised at how well they perform on Sony's full frame sensor. And with my A7R2, each lens is now stabilized when shooting hand held. Even though I have a 5D4 and EF glass, I don't hesitate to use the FD lenses.

Yup, I will say, doing this test taught me a few things. I want to mention, that aiming focus easily, that was the wow factor for me. With the Nikon and Pentax, I really just had to dial it in bit by bit. I think I did more tries on the Nikon and Pentax, just because I want it to compete well with Canon but all didn't do well. Canon 50mm 1.4 FD is the best in this class.

I shoot with Leica, Pentax, Nikon, and Canon glass. I use Leica 90mm f/2 and 21mm f/1.4 lenses on M6 and M10 rangefinder cameras. I use 28, 35, 50, 105, 135, 200, and 300mm prime M42 screw-mount Pentax lenses on my 35mm Spotmatic SLRs. I use Nikon prime lenses from 14mm to 1000mm on my Nikon SLRs. I use a Canon PowerShot G15 compact digital with a 28-140mm equivalent f/1.8 to f/2.8 fixed zoom lens. Since I have been very satisfied with the images produced from these lenses, I have never bothered to perform a head-to-head comparison. Thanks for doing it for me.

My main problem with Canon (in the digital era) has been with their heavy use of the CCH (Canon Cripple Hammer ;). I don't like it when cameras are artificially limited, where the manufacturer releases them with the handbrake on. Also, until recent years, the high ISO performance and dynamic range was noticeably behind Pentax, Nikon, Sony and Fuji. Even MFT cameras were beating them in DR as recently as early 2016, when they released the 80D, which finally brought them closer to the competition. There's a reason why Canon owners hate Dxomark! But... Just for balance, and to ruin all the fun, lol...: Those days of sub-par sensors are mostly gone, and I find it hard to notice the small differences now, but they're still swinging that CCH, which puts me off. I've never had anything less than the highest regard for their glass though - they make so many sweet lenses. Also, the UI, menus, build quality and handling of the camera bodies tends to be really good. Colours are generally very nice straight out of camera, too. For most of the things that really matter, Canon do a fine job, as do all the other manufacturers, for the most part.

I felt sure that the Pentax was either B or D, based on the way the stars looked as the lenses were stopped down, but I was hoping it wasn't D when I saw how soft the images looked when it was wide open. Then I had that sinking feeling as I remembered why I almost always used my Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 in preference to the f/1.4... The 1.4 was soft until at least f/2.8, and the 1.7 was sharper from wide open, and stayed sharper until at least f/4 or 5.6 (after that, it didn't matter). In the end, I only used the 1.4 for portraits or arty bokeh shots, because the bokeh was way smoother, and probably because you don't want sharp detail in portraits anyway. As for the Leica? You get what you pay for!
@theCameraVille
@theCameraVille 4 жыл бұрын
hahaha no you are right! There is another aspect to this I will talk about in a later video. Soft lens doesn't always mean bad. Tons of folks use these kind of lens for video work. The lens today may be too sharp for some people taste. Even though this test , folks want good sharp photos, there is another side where folks actually want that soft look. Its personal taste and you are correct! I saw one of my favorite film makers. He had a 20 K video rig and a 15 dollar lens. Cheap soft lens and it cracked me up so bad. He said he wanted that look. I will make a video down the road on this.
@AndrewSowerby
@AndrewSowerby 4 жыл бұрын
@@theCameraVille that's funny, but I guess it could be easier for a videographer if they could get the look they want from a lens, rather than have to spend hours editing to achieve the look they want. I will never say that i'm unbiased. I'm a pentax shooter with no intention to change. I voted for the lens C (Nikon) as my favorite because of the darker color. The Lens 2 (Leica) is clearly technically superior regarding bokeh, sharpness, round balls... but I found that the Nikon lens had just more taste. Wide open sharpness did not count for me simply because I always shoot between f4 and f8 (and some time at f16 for macro) tanks to the in body stabilization. I should be sad that I failed to recognize the pentax lens but I think that's good news that it's the brighter. All it means is that I only need to compensate for the brightness by increasing the speed or lowering the iso... It's easier that way than the other... Thanks for the review but more than 4000$ for testing one Leica lens and still no shameless marketing... Are you sure you understand anything about youtube economy?

There is no surprise canon fd is shatper than nikon, I shoot with both systems and canon counterparts are usually noticebly sharper with higher contrast, probably due to ssc coating. Nikon 50mm 1.4 is actually pretty amazing lens in my opinion. Yes it is not that sharp wide open, but i always get very nice color, especially skin tones and it gives a nice dimensional image. My experience with light transmission was always quite good with nikon, and i believe due lens design and large rear element and how it exposed (reminds me of canon ef 85mm 1.2 l). I am surprised it showed darker exposure in the comparison.

I also want to do skin tones but really hard to do this manual focusing all alone haha. I can pre focus maybe.

I'll take the FD every time. A clean canon nFD 50mm f1.4 is $100. The way the FD lenses render focus fall-off is so pleasing and I find their long throw focus to be easier to dial in than most others. From a value and character standpoint you can't beat them. The only issue I have with the FD lenses is there are so many cheap crappy adapters that are poor fitting and even the wrong flange distance to ruin infinity focus. Get a Novoflex adapter and all those problems go away.

Hi Li, I guessed everything right but I was cheating a little bit because Pentax-A 50mm f/1.4 is my favourite manual goto lens for my K-1. So I new in advance that it is brighter, I recognized bokeh balls and star bursts so it wasn't hard to guess. After that I knew immediately which one is Leica because Leica is the sharpest wide open, but I was surprised that Pentax is a little bit sharper than Leica when stepped down @f/8/11/16. Leica was my favourite and Nikon was the worst one. Why Nikon? Leica and Pentax are clearly better, Nikon has decent bokeh and sharpness wide open but it is so dark which is in direct contrast to Pentax which I'm using daily. Canon was always in the middle, not too bad and not too good in any category so I decided that Nikon was the worst one but with no big difference vs Canon.

I have had Canon FDn Lenses for many years, overall all Canon Lenses are very close to Leica R and Contax Zeiss Lenses ! The Canon FDn 50mm 1.4 are one of the best 50mm Lenses you can get ! The Canon Fdn 50mm FDn are not as good as the 1.4. Try to take a look at the Contax Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.7, I think it was the best 50mm Lens in the 1980´s ! I used Canon FDn Lenses on my two Canon F1 New Cameras, but now I use Sony A7RIV and A7RIVA on which I sometimes use my Canon FDn Lenses, fx the Canon FDn 20mm 2.8. I most admit that I do not like to use 50mm Lenses, any other Lens shorter or longer in focal length, but as an APSC Lens the 50mm are good though.

Have lots of vintage glass the FL & FD lines were always great optically (don't like the plastic additions of the FD line) although I do prefer the Asahi lenses build quality. @@theCameraVille The 8 element Takumar flares like crazy. This is fine lens, but not worth the collector-inflated price.

@mythbuster860 4 жыл бұрын
So here comes Takumar mythology again...don't get me wrong I love Takumars, but compare Takumar 50mm f/1.4 to Pentax-A 50mm f/1.4 is like comparing Pentax-A 50mm f/1.4 to Pentax D-FA 50mm f/1.4. Takumar is special but Pentax-A is sharper at all appertures so it is more usable in various situations. All those conclusions are from Pentax K-1 camera perspective.

@@MrBartolomeo22 well it most certainly does, in its own elegant way. But can you show me a 50mm f1.4 lens that doesn't flare? One can't achieve everything with one lens. I believe that f1.4 lenses are not meant to be used in broad day light. They are more of golden hour lenses. Dawn and dusk. Well that's my interpretation and yours might be different.
@sunnyghosh8725
@sunnyghosh8725 4 жыл бұрын
@@mythbuster860 not just any takumar. The 8 element one. It was made to compete with planars of that era. No doubt the A 50 has a better coating. Do does every modern lens. But since we are discussing about vintage lenses, coatings should be out of the equation. If you compare the 8 element with the A 50. The built quality and rendering invoke a sense of pleasure, re-assurance. We don't use a lens for its technical aspects. For me and for a lot of people who enjoy taking photos, enjoy lenses and the colours they produce. The 8 elements holds a special place. If you are more of modern lens guy, then modern lenses are the best for you. Myth is something, that exists in our imagination. The 8 element is certainly not that.

When I was testing , I always had to struggle a lot to get that shot on Nikon and Pentax. With the Leica, its just easily able to get things in focus real fast. I did more test on the Nikon and Pentax than the Canon and Leica just because of this issue. If folks want to shoot wide open with no hesitation, Leica or Canon.

the CameraVille I happen to be a Canon user. If one does really geeky, silly testing like I did years ago, you will find that while sharp, the Canon lenses are really only sharp in the middle of the frame, Leica lenses will be sharp all the way to the edge. Is that worth the eye-watering price difference? Not to me, but I’m poor!

Hello Cameraville. I think you should test the older Pentax 55mm f/1.8 instead of the 50mm f/1.7 , as it is highly regarded by connoisseurs.

Im really strict on the focal length on my channel due to previous testing. By doing a 55, will open up another 55 and another 55. So I am making clear cut case for this round. Perhaps another later round down the road.

I have them both, Pentax-K 55mm f/1.8 was the first K mount lens so it is practically Takumar with K mount. It is different, as all good Takumars, but Pentax M/A 50mm f/1.7 is sharper. Pentax M 50mm f/1.7 is THE SHARPEST Pentax lens wide open if you don't take into count Pentax 50mm macro lenses.

@@mythbuster860 I have to agree, based on my own experience with the Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 vs the f/1.4. To me it seemed sharper than the 1.4 as far as maybe f/5.6. Bokeh was much nicer on the 1.4 though, to my eye, but it should be.

Sorry don't get this. Leica V Pentax comparison. (Votes..!) I would have Leica...can't afford it. Best option Pentax. Looking forward to f1.7 comparison though. Question: What is the difference between the new ART Lens craze as compared with the Older Standard 50mm f1.7 Lenses. Why..... is it Marketing Niche or a benefit to the Camera user due to new technology.
