Thank you for the excellent video. I also own the TTArtisan and Neewer adapter and can confirm your results. However, I would like to add a very important point: with the Neewer adapter, the focal length for in-body stabilization is set to 50mm and cannot be overwritten in the camera. This makes the use of lenses with a focal length other than 50mm problematic; it is best to switch off the IBIS in those cases.

There is a video from a user of the Zf and manual lenses here in Germany. Manu Gee: „Update: Neewer ETZ Adapter on Nikon ZF with IBIS“. He found out after consulting with Neewer that you can overwrite the line with the focal length specification in the txt file of the Neewer software by hand. To do this, you have to connect the Aparter to the Mac/PC with the enclosed cable, as with a firmware update. Now you can see 2 files: the file with the firmware and a test file. The text file contains the data for IBIS and the other lens data: maximum and minimum aperture for the EXIF data.

@I2ecreate the adapter seems to override the non CPU lens focal length, at least in the EXIF data. Presumably lenses longer than 50mm won’t have the right IBIS compensation across 3 different axis

Hi Jack, this is fantastic! Frankly, I had no idea about the possibilities with the adapters. I just assumed quite a bit of the FTZ and figured that any anomalies were due to the focal length or defects of the lens or the focus system itself. I also am impressed with your Japanese. I got a linguistics degree and after graduate school, I got a stipend to teach in Osaka, which never happened (long story), but it's my life long dream to travel to Japan and that dream is not too far away. Not sure if someone pointed it out but in with the neewer adapter, you can manually change the focal length and aperture settings when you change the setting on the txt file in the lens. I’ve tested it with my different focal length lenses and you can clearly tell a huge difference with ibis once the proper focal length is set. Hope this helps!

Ah sorry got lost in the edit. TTartisan and Neewer are the best, except the TTartisan vignettes with F mount lenses in my experience. Neewer doesn’t have the best build quality but functionality wise all it’s missing is accurate focal length EXIF data.

Fantastic video. I have the original Leica Monochrom and love it and purchased a DF last year and paired with with the Voigtlander 58mm 1.4. I could never trade my Monochrom but really enjoy the DF and hope to get a good 28mm for street photography for an upcoming trip to Asia I also have a massive love of the m43 system - it’s criminally underrated in the photography community

One quick note. FTZ II does give focus confirmation, but the manual lens has to be chipped. Using Nikon AF D lenses as manual focus (since they don’t have motor built in) you get the green square. I haven’t tried other brands yet, but those do work. The thing is, the lens should somehow communicate with the camera the distance it’s focused on.

A nikon Dk-17m 1.2 magnifier on your old school DF might help with manual focusing your manual focus Nikkor glass. It's just a screw on replacement for the existing eyepiece. A split screen might be an option. I think Katz eye made one for the DF before they closed their doors, but I'm not sure and I'm thinking it will mess up the AF on your DF. Only problem is you will likely not be able to see the edges of your frame with your glasses on. If the diopter can correct for one of your eyes and you don't mind putting your glasses on your forehead or if you would consider contacts it might be worth a try. I put a DK-17m on my apsc D500 (it enlarges the picture and looks great) and the OVF looks really big on my D800e with the DK-17m, but my eye needs to be right against the OVF to see everything. Not sure it would even work to see the edges of the frame on a D850 with the even larger OVF. They are not too expensive on the used market so maybe worth a try.

The standard OVF on the DF plus the normal MF confirmation works well enough for now! Split screen sounds interesting but I still use AF lenses on the DF haha. Thanks for the recommendations!

Could you recommend an adapter that supports zone focusing and avoids vignetting? Also, how do you think the Simera 50mm f/1.4 compares to the 50mm f/1.2 APO? I personally prefer the look of the Simera, but I don’t have any experience with either lens when it comes to performance. Thanks in advance for your advice!

It’s a dilemma! Zone focusing at 50mm is always tricky, TTartisan is the one to try first if you have other M mount glass? Otherwise any M to E dummy adapter and the Neewer EtoZ pro adapter combo will give all the features you’re looking for. The simera performs better, but the Voigtlander has the dreamy look at f1.2. Haptics probably matter more, if you want a focus tab or not?

If you like zone focusing either the 35mm simera would be a better fit. The 28mm is technically their most unique lens and it's great, you just have to like 28mm as a focal length.

Thanks for another informative video. Leaves me wondering why Nikon has not fixed this issue initially with their Z mount cameras as at launch they seemed to really lean in on their older lens catalog to try and sell people on the Z mount. I tend to bring out my D5 when I want to shoot my vintage glass collection. Not as much fun as my smaller Z mount bodies but it does work with the MF lenses in a more natural way. Have you tried the Neewer adapter with a M mount adapter ? I use the ttartisan 6bit with a M to LTM adapter , but with my wider (35mm) lens, I unfortunately get some vingetting wide open.

Yes I have, M to E mount is pretty thin adapter so I didn’t see much vignetting. Stacking adapters is always tricky, I worry about the mounts getting stuck

@@BokehTherapy So I did a bit of digging and found a thread where someone using a ttartisan e to m adapter on Sony cameras actually took a dremel to it to create ‘corners’ inside. That modification is a bit much for me. I did try disassembling the ttartisan m to z adapter I had and took out one of the ‘satin’ finish parts on the inner tube out. It’s only held in place by three tiny screws so very easy to do and reverse. It doesn’t seem structural, but only there to reduce light bouncing around. One big positives is that the hard vignetting is completely gone from my LTM and F mount lenses!! Now it does expose some inner electronics, but it’s not like it’s weatherproof anyways. But I’m left wondering if the tube was even needed to prevent light bouncing around? Perhaps a good idea for you to test out this small modification for another video? :)

Hi Jack, I have all the same adapters you use and found all the same features and issues😅. But thanks for mentioning the dark corners with the TT Artisan M-Z corner. I just made a first test walk with the Leica R 35mm f/2 and found the heavy vignette and also that the focus is not aligned properly. Infiniti is around 3-5m on the lens scale. Think these are all the same issues to the same reason of slightly off flange distance.

Jack, on the subject of MF, on a paid shoot today my Zf suddenly kicked into MF when I turned the focus ring on my 50mm AF lens. I had to go back to the “i” menu to get it to get back to AF. Is this a bug? Weird?

@ ok good to know. This may have been the issue. Also, I may have inadvertently hit the front custom button (I have it set to focus mode) and turned the back dial. Dunno. Also I bought the camera very lightly used from a photographer friend. It had less than 1,000 actuations and was in totally mint condition in the box with USA warranty, so I couldn’t pass it up. But he had the menus set up his way so I’m still trying to figure out what works for me. The camera is incredible, but a learning curve. I also shoot Fuji, so still getting used to Nikon in the mix. The Zf is SO great!

I second the Fringer EF-NZ II. I can confirm it gives you both green box when focusing and eye AF confirmation with manual lenses. All you need to do is adapt manual glass to EF then onto the fringer works very very well.

I am looking to get a Thypoch Simera lens for my Zf but I want the manual focus confirmation (green box) to work. Since the Simera doesn’t have any electronic contacts it’s not going to be the case. Would the Neewer ETZ Pro adapter with a Sony E mount Simera do the trick? Since the Neewer adapter has contacts?

Yes that would do the trick! The Neewer is so thin that the E mount simera’s focus distance scales should still line up properly. Sad that we can’t just get the z mount version but it’s a solid workaround. There are more E mount than Z mount shooters so a bit easier to sell the lens if you want to

I haven’t tested all the manual lenses out there but it seems to work with every vintage lens I have tested. If the manual lens is chipped itself (e.g. the Voigtlander E mount lenses) I am not sure all the information is passed through? But then just get the Z mount Voigtlander chipped lenses

I just got the Voigt M to Z and it is very nice build quality - not chipped though :(. The close focus feature on it is nice - makes my m-lenses sort of like a macro. I also have the TTartisan 6bit adapter and it's nice having the focus confirmation and it seems to read all leica 6 bit coded lenses and has gotten all of them correctly in EXIF. My only gripe on the TTartisan is it won't full mount a couple of my Voigt lenses but does full mount the my leica and zeiss. The voigt adapter fully mounts all of them with the locking click when mounted. I've reached out to TTartisan and might be looking at swapping for another copy.

Out of curiosity: I may be wrong but the Zf has focus peaking and it can also confirm focus as the “old” DSLRs -when you are looking on the viewfinder and a green dot shows up-. Yet, I’d stick to the FTZ ii, as it is part of the same ecosystem.

Yes it has those features, but you need to be using a chipped lens or a chipped adapter. FTZii only allows this for AF-D chipped manual lenses apparently but it’s all a compatibility mess unfortunately

I tested the Neewer combo with a M42 Adapter. Works pretty well. The only downside could be the default focal length the Neewer Adapter transmits to the camera. In the EXIF data my M42 lenses are all marked as 50mm. The EXIF itself does not bother me, but i think the IBIS could be disturbed. I am not sure if this is really a problem, but usually you set up the camera for manual lenses with the focal lenght and max aparture. And as far as i understand it, this setting influences the IBIS. It still works though, bur i have the feeling it would work better with the right focal length information.

Now, that I have the Zf and those Voigtlander SLii-S lenses, I can finally fulfil my dream of getting the D850, and Zeiss Otus lenses to go with it. Presently, I am 1 Otus lens in, only 3 left to go. I return to Japan next year, and will most definitely visit Fujiya Camera.

Thanks mate for the informative video. Because of it, I got the K&F and Neewer adapters and the manual focus detections works incredible. I'm new to mirrorless and come directly from film (F100 and FE2). Sometimes I accidentally move the aperture dial and the exposure changes (even the images on the display gets lighter or darker), which it shouldn't because I'm using an old 50mm f1.8 AI-S (Japanese pancake lens). I have everything set to manual (ISO, speed and aperture) and the exposure compensation is set to 0. Is this normal? or is there a weird menu setting that I'm not aware of? a bug? I can't find information about it. I hope I explained myself properly (English is not my first language).

@BokehTherapy Thanks for replying. The top front dial is set for aperture and back one for shutter speed. Auto ISO is off. I only have 1 week with the ZF and use 2 manual Nikkor lenses AI-S (50mm f1.8 and 28mm f2.8) and 2 Nikkor D lenses (35mm f2.0 and 85mm f1.8). I like to shoot all manual. I noticed that sometimes I move the front aperture dial by mistake to try to change the aperture, instead of the lens aperture ring, and the exposimeter changes (even the screen gets lighter or darker). I'm assuming that it shouldn't be able to change the exposure because there's no electronic connection on those old Nikkor lenses. Or do the adapters do something to the aperture? I'm completely new to mirrorless and haven't shoot digital in over a decade. I asked a friend that has a Z7 and FTZ adapter and he wants me to record a video to show him, because he thinks this is weird and haven't experienced it. I can share it with you. @@BokehTherapy I do have the same settings in A and M. There are so many things in the menus, I was just used to just move the aperture, speed and ASA. But it's a fun learning experience and I'm enjoying shooting. It's probably something related to the adapters. Fortunately I can still shoot, I just can't use my brain to measure the light. nice manual adapters comparison for nikon Z, I wanted to ask if you get reliable or precise infinity focus in your TTartisan M to Z mount adapter using leica lenses and third party lenses, also in 0.7 or close focus and also in zone focus or range focus style. many affordable adapters can`t have precise focus written on the lens scale to set the focus. thank you

It depends entirely on the lens unfortunately - I can zone focus fine with the Leica 35mm f1.4 FLE V1, 50mm f1.4 ASPH, 50mm f1.2 voigtlander. Wider lenses have more trouble - the thypoch 28mm simera doesn’t line up for zone focus. That’s one of the problems with adapting unfortunately

Shoten is great but it is not chipped! This video is all focused on the chipped adapters, but I use a Shoten F to E mount to connect the Neewer E to Z for the vintage look.

Thank you for all of this effort and research into this! At the end of the day, which one of these sets of adaptors do you think you will end up using? It is great to see you still looking into AI-s. There are so many great ones, but as you touch on here, there is a lot to consider if you are going to purchase one. I can say first hand, taking the lenses apart is harder than I anticipated. They are sealed up quite tightly, ha ha.

Ohh you’ve taken them apart? I am not game for that, I have gone to Richard Haw’s website and got scared off by the lens operations haha! I will use the Neewer + Shoten adapter combo for F mount, and TTartisan for M mount lenses. Best of both worlds!

@BokehTherapy I have done some simple disassembly, but they have stuff to lock the threads which makes it pretty difficult to take them apart, even if you have the proper wrenches and things. I would rather pay more to ensure there is no fungus, but looking at online photos is not always the best, ha ha.

I've used adapted glasses for years, and with my ZF, I don't. To me, the added lenght and weight aren't compatible with the ZF. So I stick to 4 lenses : 28mm SE, 35mm Pergear, 40mm SE, or TTArtisan 75mm.

I mean if you want the best ever nikon lens ever made, is the 58mm 1.2 noct, but the 50mm 1.2 is great, avoid the 55 1.2 its relatively soft at 1.2

Even brand new straight from the box Z lenses will have dust in it if you shine light through one end and look through the other.

I think there's just not enough money to be made from adapters, more from newer Z lenses? Nikon is competing for market share so there's hope if we make enough demands as the community

@@nickthaskater And that isn't significant to any business....the very few people that want what they want without any understanding of what the people at Nikon want, which is to survive and prosper in a very competitive market where they're not the king and mistakes can cost them dearly....who cares about the ten people that "oh I'd buy the camera if you had an adaptor" which is a lie anyway....do you have a Fuji XT5? Because Fuji has the adaptors....do you have any of the other cameras that have the adaptors that let you use third party lenses? Is your work any good or are you just a guy with so much free time that you make random comments on KZbin without even realizing that everyone at Nikon can think of what you think of...and much more, and processes that input in a prioritized consideration of what grows our business? Nothing wrong with letting you choose a different camera, just as you're free to start your own camera manufacturing company and spend the millions on capital investments, lawyers for the contracts, rental agreements, employee payroll, employee benefits, business insurance, shipping fees, production plants, company vehicles, engineering staff, consultants, advertising, etc......maybe do all that and see if you care about one guy that wants you to make a camera his way?

Might be a comprehension problem, and not a video production problem. Pretty sure it's obvious which is the real issue, as there's no likes on your comment, and I didn't have any issue, and typically it's a less educated and simple mind that can't process that reality happens on many simultaneous layers....so it was actually a creatively intelligent effort to intermingle sponsorship agenda into the walk around Japan searching for lenses in a country that gasp....speaks Japanese and anyone that would visit as a non-Japanese person would easily benefit from some basic linguistic assistance.

I am not a scientist like yourself so please forgive me if maybe I display some ignorance here. Regarding fungus, here is my simplified understanding of how it works and how you can stop it from happening or from reappearing after being removed. Fungus spores are everywhere, they cannot be avoided, they are in every breath we take. Fungus is like a plant, it needs three things to survive, water, food but unlike a normal plant, darkness instead of light. So if you deprive it of any one of these three things it simply cannot grow. Food, I'm not so sure where from but the microscopic dust inside a lens or even it has been suggested lens coatings. Water, from humidity, above 45 to 50% and darkness from keeping it in a case or a camera bag. I live in SE Asia and I do use a humidity cabinet to house all my cameras. If you live, say in Arizona, you would never have to worry due to the low humidity. So, according to this theory, despite where I live, if I just left my lenses out in a light filled area or used them on a regular basis, I should not have to worry. But, despite what I have said above, I'm still not willing to test this out in the real world.😮 Fungus does not randomly occur as if by magic and it is not inevitable.

Arizona here...and yes lenses get fungus in Arizona...don't confuse outside weather with inside conditions....a lens can grow fungus in another state, be shipped to your house, and that fungus can spread easily to every lens in your house or every lens in a camera shop, hence camera shops refusing to do ANY work on ANY lens that has fungus....the spores can get into anything they are so tiny and mobile, and then they grow and can ruin the lens or at least the resale value as no one wants a lens with fungus. With that said....yes, fungus can be treated in most cases, but life normally has many other higher priorities than constantly checking the condition of lenses so it's often not seen until too late. Avoid anything that looks like it has fungus, unless you're expert at dealign with it offsite away from your other lenses.
