Choosing the best AIO size for your PC build or upgrade can be extremely confusing since All in One liquid coolers might come in different sizes but does that mean they offer different cooling performance? In this video we take an apples to apples look at the full landscape of 240mm, 280mm, 360mm and 420mm AIO's to see if any one of them stands out as having the best performance.

I would use them if the tube exit isn’t so poorly designed and sticks out the front like that. Makes it so difficult to route tubes well and makes the block height clearance a pretty big issue for many small cases.

brilliant stuff, as always Mike. Always fascinating to see how different coolers compare. Glad you mentioned size and compatibility in cases. It's not just about if the front or top of your case is long enough to take a 360/420, it's also about the height of the AIO's radiators and fans in relation to the height of your ram (and where many people get caught out, also your motherboard's VRM heatsink). For ram, Corsair's LPX is always a safe bet, but you really need to be careful with the height of your motherboard's VRM heatsinks too when choosing an AIO - they can often be taller than your ram. Even huge cases like the Meshify S2 runs into size compatibility issues, which is crazy when you look at how big it is

In my experience the thermal bottleneck with modern CPU usually isn’t the cooler section. It’s the heat transfer from the silicon through the heat spreader and into the cold plate itself. Once the heat is in the cooling medium it’s fairly easy to reject. I’d be interested in also tracking the water/fluid temp of these coolers into and exiting the cold plate & radiators to see which ones are actually most effective.

Recently upgraded from an air cooler, the AK400. I just bought what's suited for my case which has a space at the top for a 360mm AIO. Sure, a 240mm AIO would fit in there as well (while providing ample cooling for my Ryzen 7 5700X) but it wouldn't look as nice aesthetically. My approach would be to work with what you already have.

I found an unused arctic LF 2 420 for 990 SEK. That is about 90 USD. It cools my 7900x without noise most of the time. It even keeps it from thermal throttling despite overclocked to 5.85ghz in prime95. If you have tve room for it you should get it. People buy them (arctic LF) without checking for compatibility first so there are a lot of bargains online. The non rgb fans have some weird motor noises so get the rgb ones if you can.

What I did was change the 120mm fans on my Corsair AiO with Phanteks T30 fans. If I need massive cooling for benchmark runs, those fans can push so much air with so much static pressure, the only limitation is the coldplate and the thermal dissapation area of the radiator itself.

An excellent introduction to your future reviews on AIOs! I am afraid, however, your noise floor level is a bit too high at 35.3 dBA for comparison at a low noise level. When you test AIOs at a very low fan RPM, I wonder if you could keep your PSU's fan from running or, better yet, use a fanless PSU; turn off discrete GPU and use iGPU, and keep case fans at inaudible noise level or stop them completely.

I decided on the EK Nucleus AIO CR360 Lux in white and from your test results and this CPU a 280 AIO would have worked about the same But EK doesn't make a 280 Nucleus yet. The reason why I went with EK is that is what they do, water cooling and their AIO water block has more copper in it to dissipate the heat from what I was told.

Great video 😀 Although I was always more of an air cooler "fan", I'm starting to realise that they start to struggle with these high-end newer generation CPUs. The more expensive, high-performance air coolers released this year, like the ones from DeepCool and BeQuiet, were major disappointments thus far, but there's still hope that Noctua will be able to turn the tide when they finally release their new flagship air cooler. Therefore, I think that in your future liquid cooler reviews, it will be useful to include the best air coolers in the charts to give us perspective, both from a performance+noise but also from a price point of view.
@stiegelzeine2186
@stiegelzeine2186 6 ай бұрын
Noctua is nothing special so don’t expect more than like 5-10% more performance because aircoolers are at their physical limit and noctua certainly can’t dissipate heat through another dimension like nzxt does with the air for their closed off cases
@nexy84
@nexy84 6 ай бұрын
@@stiegelzeine2186 Noctua definitely was special, which was said many times on this channel and elsewhere. There's a reason their previous flagship air cooler is still part of most CPU cooler tests, even though it's several years old. But then the Peerless Assassin arrived, showing that it's possible to make a great air cooler while costing half of the £100+ premium air coolers. On the other hand, the new CPU generations turned out to be tricky to cool, pushing more and more people towards liquid coolers, including me. This makes the situation for Noctua quite difficult, as they only focus on air coolers. They either will need to prove that £100+ air coolers are worth the price through innovation, or they will need to cut the price, or they will need to widen their product portfolio to stay in business. For me personally, the question is: if for example a good 240mm liquid cooler costs £110, and a 360mm one £130, how do they compare to air coolers from multiple perspectives: performance, noise, price, longevity, etc.

@1SaG
@1SaG 5 ай бұрын
Not sure I'd want to mount any radiator at the top of the case if I can put it in the front (as an intake) instead. You'll be blowing warm air from inside the case through the radiator with a top mount/exhaust, so your CPU temps will probably suffer a bit. Top mount/intake seems even more counter-intuitive because your radiator fans will then work against the hot air's natural tendency to rise inside the case. I'm limited to a 280 at the top of my case while the front supports 360s ... so I'm *probably* going to go with a 360 and put it in the front once I do decide to upgrade my current 240.

The final PC is also an I7 13700K paired with a 280mm Kraken Elite this is quite a bit more expensive as the Elite has the larger LCD screen the but well worth the extra money when building the PC not only for performance but also for looks if it was about the money I would have gone with Noctua air cooling and saved myself several houndred dollars for the same results

After 10 years of using AIOs, I've learned exactly how to choose the right size for my builds: Use an air cooler. The only AIOs I've ever used have been from Corsair, a couple of 120s, a couple of fat 240s, and a 280. I've also built a fully custom EKWB system. Never again. There's nothing wrong with water cooling, but given how good air coolers have become, and since I don't constantly run CPU stress test software to marvel at how cool my CPU is, there's just no reason to mess with it.
@HardwareCanucks

I think it all depends on context too. Without a doubt AIO's can subjectively "look" better than most air coolers since they have the possibility to incorporate more RGB, LCD screens, etc. But even if you think of situations where looks become immaterial, like in a space constrained ITX build, there are many enclosures that support 240 / 280 AIO's in that space that just can't mount tower style coolers. In those builds, an AIO can certainly deliver amazing cooling results.

@@HardwareCanucks True on all counts, but some of us focus on how what's on the screen looks, not what's inside the case. We often choose a larger case simply because the large internal volume contributes to cooling.

I am team 360 and tbh, mostly for the looks. I run a 13600k and a smaller AIO would be more than enough. If I would rebuild my system (13600k + 4070 non ti), I might even go the mini tower route, as this setup doesn't consume loads of power and runs quite cold in generall.

Jeeez, I was waiting so long for AIO reviews from You guys!!! Is there any chance will you review Cooler Master ML Illusion? Preferable 360 version 😇 Also it would be nice to see in depth comparison of mounting radiator in front and top of the case to see how it affects modern GPU’s and CPU’s performance. Analysis that I find on the internet are lacking many data, like for example how front mounted CPU AIO radiator affects clocks on GPU (not only temps due to the Boost)

Very cool video 😁 But will I need to have a AIO for a 7800X(3D) to prevent thermal throttling? I am not planning a new build until Zen 5 anyway, but I expect that a Thermalright tower would be enough for an AMD 8-core unit.

Not really surprised that the 280mm is so competitive with the 360mm. There is only a 10% difference in radiator area (39,200 mm2 vs 43,200 mm2) and it has quite and more efficient fans (but only 2 vs 3).

I'd love to see this level of rigourous testing with a single 280mm radiator paired with a vast selection of 140mm fans.

well in my case the bigger radiator does mean better cooling performance - but I slapped Noctua IndustrialPPCs on there, which always are capable of 3000RPM - no matter which size you choose 😁

I just upgrade to the 7800x3d and am using a fuma 2 air coooler. I honestly think a light breeze could cool this cpu lol. What are you gaming temps like? I am dying to put an 240mm aio on it in my new case
@emiel255
@emiel255 6 ай бұрын
@@9blunted well that cooler you have is very good so it makes sense for your cpu to be nicely cooled Usually my temps are between 60-70 during gaming As for my GPU it’s on the Quiet mode BIOS which means it will aim for a quieter GPU at the cost of a 5 degree temp increase. So during gaming my GPU will be basically at 70 degrees (not any higher). When it’s very cold in my room however it can go down to 65 degrees Oh and also this might be useful information for you since you want to buy a new case, those aforementioned temps are with a fully open case design so I have basically the best airflow possible for my AIO fans and GPU fans

I'd like to know wether a low profile cooler is better than a 120mm aio in tight builds in terms of performance/noice level? Right now I can get a 120mm aio here in sweden for under 30 USD. That's roughly what you have to pay for a mid range low profile one.

Cool comparison. It's a pretty bad idea to draw conclusions on which AIO size is the best, based on one lineup. Other brands might have very different fans, radiotors and waterblocks, which could produce different results
@HardwareCanucks
@HardwareCanucks 6 ай бұрын
I'd think that, within a margin of error, other brands would be about the same. Then again it really depends on fan specs since we've seen with DeepCool's LT series that their 140mm fans have insane specs compared to the 120mm based units. That would however cement my opinion that 280mm is the best solution right now.

want to add about 280mm vs 360mm. not every pc case can support 280mm mounted on top ventilation. since it can interfere with motherboard's heat sink. slim case like Corsair 4000d or Montech Sky Two doesn't always support 280mm AIO on top since it depends on motherboard you use.

Don't the larger AIOs after a point only prolong the length of time to saturation? Now that would be a great test to experimentally determine by game, resolution, and effects time to saturation? Once passed this time, find the steady state temp and the corresponding performance. After that point, performance should be evaluated. Basically, find per genre of application the time it takes to have average performance, not the boosted short duration performance. Aren't all coolers limited by the ambient temperature?

Using 120mm on my 5800X3D (Arctic Freezer II before it was discontinued), no issues with gaming, was cheaper then 240mm at the time. Plus, in use in ITX case so cant even fit 240 if I wanted. After watching the video, the only thing I wish these roundups would have is replacing the fans with higher performing fans, ya price is thrown out the window, but not so far as to go custom water cooling.

Thicker radiators, which I don't think exist in AIOs currently make a very big difference too. It's all about that surface area. One advantage open loops can have over AIOs.
@HardwareCanucks

Arctic has thicker radiators, though in that situation their limitations will always be fan-based since you need immense static pressure to overcome a thicker rad.

@@HardwareCanucks I'd have thought the pressure was related to fin density not depth. I'd like to see some testing on that seeing as you're getting into AIO testing :)
