11:28 Fiskars SureCut Plus Paper trimmer is amazing. It has replacement blades and has a scoring function (it has a scoring wheel built in). It has a metal arm to slide the blade, and a foldable arm to fit big sheets (A3). I've had mine since 2018 and am super happy. Thanks so much for sharing your best and worst preferences...I am always open to learning from others.

Honestly for newbies I feel like you’re better off buying arches if you want success quickly! I felt like a failure at first once I switched I had success with every technique! I do use cellulose paper or just my sketchbook with other mixed media techniques. But I’m working on some realism floral and botanical sketches my husbands been buying me flowers all winter ( we live in Michigan) I love arches for it the results speak for themselves. I really don’t do any social media yet but trust me it’s so worth saving for it if you can.😊

My Pitt Artist pens are starting to run out. I've never liked the step near the nib, I'm a nib creeper. I've just replaced them with a TWSBI Eco pens filled with Platinum Carbon Black ink (waterproof), one with an Extra Fine nib, for a fineliner, one with a 1.1mm stub nib for drawing and calligraphy (30 years of doing calligraphy and I finally have waterproof calligraphy!) and I also have a Lamy Safari with a 1.5mm nib, and Lamy Safari with 1.9mm nib, and 2 Lamy Safari pens with medium nib (Lamy Safari are so easy to swap the nibs while full of ink, so I can swap those around and have different inks... All my Lamy's have converters) ... I'm also about to fill a TWSBI Eco White pen with a 1.1mm stub nib with White De Atramentis document ink to replace white signo/posca for highlights in art, and for white waterproof calligraphy.

Glad you found some pens that work great for you. Is the white ink you mentioned waterproof? I’d love to know how it works. I use Uniball Signo because I think it’s the most opaque. But they run out fast and I’d love to have a refillable option.

Art glitter glue is my fave, when used for what it is designed to do. It is not meant to be used a cardmaking glue. It was designed for working with microfine glitter, specifically to dry in those raised lines , you don't want, and very quickly. It dries clear and flexible. We used it for layered mandala stamping, where we coloured the layers with beautiful microfine glitter. It also worked brilliantly on acetate to create stained glass window effects. It gives you the control you need for the fine detail needed , and the speed to stop wastage of expensive glitter, you never had smudging. I've never experienced issues with the tip either. I would not use it for sticking paper or card together though.

Thanks for info re photo printer. My youngest got her first professional camera this xmas and it would make a great easter present. Fiskars and tonic make very similar slim paper trimmers for quick cuts of paper. I use mine for a quick trim, use aluminium foil to sharpen the blades before you need to replace. I love my cutterpillar pro for accurate trims, but you do need to stand up and hold cardstock in place yourself.

That makes total sense. I had seen so many paper crafters and journalers recommend it, so I thought it would work for my purposes. I think I like to work with thin paper and it’s not great for that.

I don't even know if the company has changed hands since the clever lady who showed me her product at UK craft show decades ago, but I wouldn't be surprised if the fine tips are not so great anymore. I tend to buy the large bottle and decant into one of the fine silicon ended, mini bottles now. I also prefer knitting blocking pins where possible than the dressmaker pins. I use Golden paints and mediums too, but recently bought some bearly art glue to try, I have heard it takes longer to dry and is not so rigid. Thanks for the downloads too, really fun for daily practice.

Re glue: it is a PVA glue, as is Bearly Art, and there are archival versions as well that are used in bookbinding. Those metal tips are ubiquitous and can be found on Amazon as well as many craft stores. If the head of the pin comes apart (which has happened to me) you can find another pin the same diameter (for sewing, e.g.) and use it to push the broken one out. I don’t like to leave the pin in, as it doesn’t really seal well enough and tends to rust over time, so I use a little rubber cap instead. Occasionally i need to take everything apart and give the metal tips a soaking, then it works a charm. I do agree that it is better for cardstock (80lb or better) than thin paper. It is intended to be used in very small quantities, and in that use case, it is very strong. I find the wiggle time depends a lot on the weather in my area, and if you want to be able to change your mind or reposition, your preference for a glue stick makes sense.

Fantastic video! Thanks for the Faber-Castell pens and canon printer links. I'm definitely going to consider them. I'm a writer who arts sometimes, and I want to draw more. I'm journaling and doodling with 0.5mm Pilot precise v5 pens. I love acrylic paint, but I'm much more likely to draw or "paint" with a Sharpie brush pen or Creative Marker than to set up and then clean up paint supplies. I love the look of watercolor paintings, but don't have the patience for working with them. (But I can wrestle or play with words for hours.) Edit: My biggest buying regrets are copic alcohol markers (smelly and they bleed) and several sets of colored pencils and graphite pencils, which I rarely use and don't enjoy using.
@JackieHernandezWatercolor
@JackieHernandezWatercolor Күн бұрын
“A writer who arts sometimes” 😂 Love that! I think it’s so important to recognize what you enjoy using and what you don’t. I think we all have patience for some mediums over others. It’s funny, when I started painting I thought I’d love acrylic. But I hated it. Then I tried gouache, which was better but still not my favorite. Finally I gave watercolor a try and I’ve never looked back. I resisted watercolors for a long time though because I assumed I wouldn’t like them. I was completely wrong. I think it’s great that you try so many things and keep note of what you like and prefer spending your time on.

I love Art Glitter glue, I always have a little wiggle room. But I do live up north so that probably makes a difference. Now, as to the pin, this may change my mind about repurchasing AGG. I recently needed a new pin because the ball on top of mine came off after two years of use. After two years, I feel that was reasonable. I purchased a new one off Amazon. That one broke within two days! I called the customer service for the company and the service agent was flippant and basically told me he didn’t know how to help me. Then I went on Amazon and read the one star reviews, which I hadn’t done before because it is a product I’m familiar with. And so many said the same thing, the ball on top of the pin comes off. Bummer. Anyway, after that long story, thank you for a great video. 🙂

This was great! Now, I love Glitter Glue, but I understand how it might not work for everyone. With all my water soluble glues, I soak the tips every couple of uses/days. They do clog, so it's very helpful. I put my GG and acid free glue in small (maybe 2" tall) squeeze tip bottles. The tips are easy to clean and it's much easier to handle a small bottle of glue than a large one. I also thought of replacing my huge rotary cutter that never seems to have a home. I decided it wasn't worth it because the rotary blades last longer and cut more cleanly.

@@JackieHernandezWatercolor I would think that if you soak the tip in hot water, then take a pliers and slowly wiggle it back and forth from the long end that you might be able to remove it. I've never used this glue before, so I don't know what it's made of, so you may have to try soaking it in some kind of solvent first.

Yes, soaking in hot water should do the trick. I use this glue constantly and love it. If my straight pin gets stuck while I am not using it during a project, the hot water softens it. After I am done, I always run hot water through the applicator tip and the pin before storing it. @@JackieHernandezWatercolor

Great video! I've also had a hard time finding a good small(er) paper cutter, and always end up going back to the one I bought about 40+ years ago. It has the big handle with a blade that you bring down, and it's fairly heavy. But after all these years, it still cuts beautifully despite never having to buy a new blade, or even sharpening the original blade. And like yours, mine sits in a corner, with easy access. I also love the Mijello palettes! I bought several of them about 8 years ago and just love the design of them. I have one for gouache one for acrylic paint, and two for watercolor. They really are airtight, and I've never had a problem with mold. I also made the swatch card just like you did, and it's really nice to have it sit behind the clear plastic. However, when I wanted to use the clear plastic for extra mixing space, all I had to do was to scrub it with toothpaste and then with a magic eraser, and the paint doesn't bead up anymore. The best tape (in my opinion) is cheap masking tape from the hardware store. It sticks well, but also peels well, unless I leave it on for a month when I get distracted by something else. (Which I am prone to do lol ) If it's too sticky for you, you can just stick it to your pants or shirt first, and that works well too.

Thanks for all your tips. I think I need to pull out my gouache paints and set up another palette now 😊 Sounds like your big paper cutter is a Guillotine. For a better paper trimmer, get a quilting ruler (great for custom sizes, left or right handed, keeps fingers safe from cuts) a rotary cutter (easy to replace blades) a self healing mat ( can live permanently on your desk, variety of sizes) and a hand weight or heavy can of soup to hold down the ruler ( less likely to slip as you move away from your body, requires less force from your body). Bit expensive for initial cost layout but lasts for ages and great for space saving.

I used to use it super sparingly which meant it stuck to whatever it touched first, I now use it a bit more liberally and get wiggle room that way, maybe that will help with the Art glitter glue as well?

That’s a good tip. Unfortunately I think that would make bigger riggers or lumps with the Art Glitter Glue. I haven’t tried tacky glue yet.

Great video. Really helpful. Hopefully I can help you too. You were looking for ideas for a good quality small paper trimmer, which this isn't exactly, it's a guillotine. Lol. I personally find I get better results from a guillotine. Anyway I use the small Tim Holz guillotine which cuts beautifully and it's great if space is at a premium. I would definitely recommend it.

Thank you. My original reply to you disappeared. I’m definitely open to a guillotine. Seems so much easier. I always thought one would be too big, but the mini ones look great!

I adore Art Glitter glue and would be lost without it. That said, I had the exact same experience with their fine tip applicator. Instead, I purchased some empty 1 ounce fine/needle tip bottles on Amazon and put the glue in one of those. After I use it, I clear the tip with a small piece of wire, then cap it with the silicone cap that came with the bottle. No problems since then, and the tiny bottle is easier to control.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to try it. Several people have made the same recommendation. I do want to be able to use up the glue I have.

@@JackieHernandezWatercolorThe little 1-ounce bottles came in a pack of a dozen or so. As an added bonus, I discovered that I like to use them with acrylic paint (slightly watered down). They make fun stylized lines for writing or doodling with. 😊

Hola Jackie... wonderful video as always! I wanted to share another paper trimmer NOT TO BUY at Walmart. It's a brand called Hello Hobby and I got on a whim because I couldn't find my favorite Fiskars rotary trimmer online. It was only $10, but really worth $5, it's absolute garbage. Just wanted to let you know in case you were ever curious. I will say I LOVE my Baohong Academy and Meeden paper blocks for floral work! But for top notch results, I depend on Arches Rough! I'm also in the market for a good light box... do you have any recommendations?

Thank you! I’ll avoid that trimmer! At this point I’m willing to pay more to get good quality. My light box is linked under the Tech category on my Supplies page: jackiehernandez.studio/resources

Hi Jackie, I wanted to ask you about the Strathmore watercolor paper you talked about. You said it was the 400 series, but I've only seen the yellow cover on the 300 series. I use the 400 series and the 500 series and love them! ❤

Hello Jackie. This video was very informative. What frames do you suggest for paintings? Thank you 😊
@JackieHernandezWatercolor
@JackieHernandezWatercolor 15 күн бұрын
For watercolor, you have to make sure the painting does not come into contact with the glass, so choose a frame with a matte. Unfortunately most watercolor papers don’t match standard frame and matte sizes. I came up with a DIY float mounting option that works really well. Here’s the tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3rNmX15ftlphdU

Gosh that’s interesting I have always found Art glitter to have wiggle room and never had trouble with the pins i think you were very unlucky. However i do think glue is a very personal individual thing . Good video though 😊

Others have pointed out it may be the climate in my area. I’m in Texas and I get no wiggle room unless I accidentally put way too much glue, which causes other problems.

I make cards and your new paper , the blades get dull and it rips the paper. I use a fiskers rotary blade cutting trimmer. The rotary blades don’t get dull, mine is also large but I just don’t have problems with.

Do they still make rotary blade trimmers? If you know the name of yours, I’d love to look it up. I’ve held onto my old one so long because I love the rotary blade.

If it says nothing about the fibre content on any paper then it is likely 100% cellulose. It will usually say acid free if it's of any quality at all, but that's it.
@JackieHernandezWatercolor

It is acid free thankfully. That’s why I felt okay using it up for watercolor sketches to add to my journals.
