I love the colored vintage bathroom styles coming back! My bathroom has a lot of the original black and white tile work from 1930 and the previous owners went bubblegum pink and a horrible faux marble counter top. Replacing with neutrals and pops of colors as accessories will update the whole thing and still honor the history of the space I think!

Over the decades we found out how important things like grab bars are not only with aging but with injuries. Even when young, having a hip go out of place made me learn real quick that steps are 'bad' whether in the bathroom or having a two-story home.

“ Ageing in place”, my builder gave be this feature in my (not “master, but “goddess” ) bath shower . At 63 and great health,it surely will be appreciated later on…. also , great advice about being mindful with usually permanent color in baths. I did all three in varying features of black and white for the ultimate versitality. Was great you and my personal designer, Anna, agreed. She said her three were all black and white too. You can make black and white any vibe…. with $100 bucks or less, can give you a whole new bath anytime the mood strikes! Also, I love my new double length vanity…. but taking a second bedroom to make a “dressing room” with a special stand alone vanity for doing makeup and displaying curated vintage cosmetics/ perfume collection. Using space wisely for personal enjoyment is everything! 🌟

I absolutely can’t stand a makeup vanity in the bathroom. One of the worst places to store all my creams and cosmetics, due to the heat/ moisture in the air. I transformed a spare bedroom into my “walk in” closet with my vanity in there. Makes sense, nothing goes off too soon and I don’t have to worry about a steamed up mirror.
@esmeraldagreen19922 жыл бұрын
Again, it all depends on what you have in your house, your budget, lifestyle and personal taste. I took the vanity out of my master bath because I never used it. It was impractical and pretty much unusable.

I’ve said it before on other videos but my house is from 1950. It still has the original blue square tile all over the bathroom. I will say the maintenance on all of that grout is so time consuming. I would definitely opt for swapping it all out if I could but that’s for a project down the road. I love the marble slab idea for at least the shower because cleaning grout is the bane of my existence and the cleaning lady is so tired. I am the cleaning lady.

If you have to still get grout tile, make sure the grout is wide and the tiles are really big. I hate small tile and tiny grout lines. My floors are great but my kitchen counter and backsplash are pure white and tiny tiles with puny grout lines 😩😭 Glad it's just a rental though.

Step up bath and shower? I'm in my early 50's, finally bought my dream house, and will be redoing my bathroom soon, and am thinking 20 years into the future. I want a zero threshold shower in case later me or my husband are temporarily in a wheelchair and need to wheel into the shower. I helped take care of my mom in her late 70's and early 80's and getting her into a shower, even the smallest step threshold to get into the shower was a risk of her tripping and falling, and I had to help shower her.

My current building was built in 1963 and the bathroom is almost fully original apart from a new medicine cabinet and a water connection for a washing machine. The walls are tiled up to about 1m30 in a soft yellow colour (upper walls are white), and the floor has micro-tiles in different colours making a very 60's pattern. When I first saw it I was like, how am I going to live inside that time-capsule? But after just a couple of weeks the whole thing really grew on me because the yellow is quite cheerful and unoffensive, and the floor actually gives a nice decorative touch. It was actually tastefully done. So I'm all for colourful bathrooms now (as long as the colours aren't toooo crazy). Bring them on!
@elainehoffman72293 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your common-sense approach to beautiful, functional design. Many of those old green/black/pink bathroom tiles used to be plastic, not ceramic, which makes them even more terrible. Also, the ceramic was not usually a soft pink . . it was the color of liquid antibiotics or pepto-bismol. I know this . . . because I spent thousand$ gladly getting rid of them along with the matching toilets, sinks, and tubs. You've got great advice and the examples you show are wonderful! One more thing: your sweater vest. I love it!!

My house was built in 1970. The hall bathroom has the burgundy wine color tile with the petal pink tub and toilet. They are still useful so we are keeping it as it is. I actually had to custom make some replacement tile to do a shower repair a couple of years ago. The master / main bathroom has this buff beige tile that I'm not really crazy about, with the light green tub and toilet. Both of these fixtures in the main bathroom need to be replaced as they are cracked. Tile has to come off to replace the tub ( it's gotta be down to the studs) so I'm thinking about making more of the burgundy tile for the main bathroom with white fixtures. Downstairs we have another bathroom with a walk in tiled shower but water is leaking under the tile and heading out if the bathroom so this is my first priority. It has random tile left from both bathrooms and whatever color bull nose tile they could find. Pink, blue, lavender etc. Down here since it would have to be ripped out down to the studs to put in a shower base, I'm going to see if we can do a whirlpool tub! I've always wanted one, it would turn the 3/4 bath into a full and I think it would be an easier install downstairs than in the main bathroom.

Garrett, My husband and I (both retirees) bought a house previously owned by a gentleman who was wheelchair bound. The master bath is well fitted with safety handholds, etc. No problem. Our problem is with a half bath (one of two on the main level) with a vanity counter, sink, cabinets, and mirror all cut down to fit someone in a wheelchair. We can’t be sure we won’t need these features eventually. But, in the meantime, we’re wondering if we should spend the money to “undo” this amenity and return it to a “normal” half bath.

Personally, think marble, especially the heavy veined one, is terribly overdone in the last 2-3 years - both in kitchens and bathrooms. It all looks like public toilet or a hotel room to me. Don't like it. My taste is Scandinavian aesthetics which is functional minimalism. In one word - Ikea. For people who like to flaunt it - Conran design.

I have recently been doing renovation in my apartment and the most difficult choice was the colour of the wall which finally I made off-white slightly cream. For the bathroom the most difficult choice was to find the wall tile concept. I spent months examining various options and finally I found the tile for the floor with an interesting graphic pattern which occurred quite accenting and after that I covered the walls just with white sleek tiles and white grout. I looks good to me. Thank you!

We are moving in to a house built in 1991. Huge kitchen with dusty rose Corian counters and blush pink tile floors. I know exactly what the kitchen and bath designer was thinking - Someone will need to remodel. I hate vessel sinks. I had a client redo a half bath with a 10k hand blown Venetian glass vessel sink. Connecting the drain to it was positively terrify. Begging the plumber not to use a wrench…… I don’t care if it leaks, I only care that it does not break!

As always, I enjoyed your video. So… in the midst of a build here and we have two bathrooms. One has a shower and that one has a mango wood desk we are using as the vanity with one of those rough hewn stone vessel sinks. The other has a freestanding tub (with a textured tile floor, so no slip!). That one we are using a glass fronted cabinet as the vanity with a glass vessel sink that is in shades of brown and gold. In both cases, the sinks aren’t super deep and the bottle of hand soap sits next to the sink. I know vessel sinks are trendy but I do love the look of them, especially when they are installed on interesting pieces of furniture.

Our house was built in 49 and the main bath is pink and black. The tile is huge in scale and it covers every, floor to ceiling (*including* the ceiling). It is a statement and one I don’t entirely love, but since we can’t redo the whole bathroom at this point, we’re updating in little ways as we can: lights, hardware, sink vanity. Trying to stay true to the spirit of the house while giving ourselves more functionality. It’s an adventure to say the least 😅

For the past few months I’ve been having furniture pieces, like that cabinet display in your references and two wicker stools, and they have been very nice and functional. It’s nice when we were renovating because these pieces don’t have to permanently stay there and if the next person would rather put something else like a vanity, there is that options without a huddle of labor. Garrett...can you please comment on a trend (I'm seeing in UK videos) of partially tiling stand-aloneshowers with patterned hexagonal large tiles where the tiles are put low and go up at an angle but never to the top.
@GarrettLeChic3 жыл бұрын
Hi Teresa! I’ve seen it some and while we love the UK, this is not a trend from an aesthetic or functionality standpoint I like very much. Happy Holidays!🎄🎄🎄

I have mixed feelings on the basin sink, but I would not put one in mine, which is recently renovated to a very simple modern style to accommodate my mom's limited mobility. I make enough mess washing my face in a regular sink, so nope on the basin sink for me, but some of them are really interesting. When I was a little kid, we lived with my grandparents whose entire home was decorated in items from the late 1800s through the 1950s (I still own some of the furniture). They had a powder room in the basement level den that was dark red with gold fixtures (polished brass probably). I keep imagining how that powder room could be done today, and I don't hate it. A lot of people are doing dramatic powder rooms now. But the glam red and gold was incongruous to the rest of the traditional home decor.

I think free standing tubs are beautiful but the second time I pulled a groin muscle slipping on my way out of the tub I swore I’d never have one again.
@GarrettLeChic3 жыл бұрын
They certainly are beautiful, but not for everyone. Of course, one could slip out of any tub or on any wet surface potentially. I'm sorry to hear you pulled your groin muscle. Hope you are feeling better. Happy Holidays!

When we built our house, we decided not to do a vanity, instead we extended the vanity at counter height and it made it more functional! I was wondering your thoughts on a stand up fiberglass shower. We had a tile shower at our other house and hated the upkeep and cleaning the grout. We put a fiberglass shower in our new house for easy cleaning and I’m wondering if we made a mistake. Could we tile above the surround and add a nice frameless glass door to make it look better or would you remove it and add a tile shower with less grout lines? Thank you!

Speaking of safety....will you do a video on how to create a beautiful bathroom that is also accessible for people with limited mobility or disabilities? So many people will experience a physical challenge at some point, whether due to age or for other reasons. It'd be great to see examples of accommodations that are not so clinical. A bathroom can be functional, accommodating, safe, and aesthetically pleasing.

I love your bathroom ideas!! Thank you for sharing and giving advice for various styles and tastes. I live in a one bedroom, one bathroom basement / In-law type of space. It has low ceilings and the bathroom and kitchen have acoustic tiles for the ceiling. What are your budget friendly DIY recommendations for how to cover these up and make the ceilings look less institutional? What is your opinion of glue up faux ceiling tiles?

Ive been designing with faucets/water on the wall so that you can change out the cabs underneath as you like. With that said the pieces I have for cabs are so nice (very unique antiques) that you cannot buy them anywhere... timeless design. My tub is the same way - you can replace the tub as long as the drain is able to drain the in spot we have it - the faucets etc. are all on the wall.. I didn't see anything about saunas or steam showers. We have both and just love them. I designed and built these in myself - the sauna is so healthy for you and was wondering why no one seems to comment about these in bath design. My whole sauna kit was $3k (5' x 5') - that's it and is so lovely and non intrusive in the room - it's the one thing I love about my house and makes me think twice about moving anywhere ... because I'd need to build another sauna where ever we go... We totally removed the ugly square bath (w/jets) with huge step up that were so slippery on the stairs and on top my kids used them to slip off into the "Pool" that always ran cold water at the end of trying to fill it up... Love hearing about no steps - you could add something about the types of baths (Square/huge is so uncomfy and hard to fill/wasteful ) - this rant was satisfying to hear lol!!!

I'm glad I no longer have a pink bathroom. My mom had the pink tub enameled white. Due to a guest trying to unclog my tub without asking me (I was at work). He bought a harsh chemical plumber & combined with the plunger removed the enamel from all around the drain😱🪠 Now I have to redo the enamel😑

My grandparents have a freestanding tub made of metal and I remember every time I had to use it I was worried about it tipping over. Plus, you have to clean both the inside and the outside. Built in tubs don't have that issue, plus there is more room to put your cosmetics around the tub. 😊 I know I'm a year late to this video, but I feel it's still relevant and I'm glad that yt algorithm recommended this video 🤗

I just redid my master and did a 2 inch step up because I couldn’t go curbless😭😭….I live in a highrise condo and It was going to be a very difficult task. Orignally there was like a 6 inch ledge where you stepped down into the shower. I thought that looked dated lol. Now I have about a 2 inch step up…..lord I hope I don’t fall!!!

We live in a 1948 home. I was thinking of doing a nod to that style of bathroom. A black and white floor but with a beautiful green tile shower. And just decorating with pink. Accented with gold/brass fixtures. What do you think?

Love your style, I’m getting ready to do a bathroom gut and Reno, professionally. If is a condo en-suite so limited space. It so mind scrambling, all the possibilities. I am converting the builder grade acrylic shower tub combo to a tiled stand alone shower, I really love the darker black tile look with wood elements added, in vanity shelving etc. Is going for a dark tile in the shower a bad idea in a smaller bathroom space??
@GarrettLeChic2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Sparkly! While it may not be the most popular choice, I don't necessarily think dark colors are wrong in small spaces as long as you have the right lighting or it could be a very dark space, and personally that I would not care for. :)

I think the retro bathroom can work if it is part of the original house. Definitely update what you can but keeping the original tile is nice --most of the time!

If I lived in a year-round warm weather area I'd definitely opt for the indoor outdoor tub/bathroom. I love the look... but I live in Michigan 🥶
@elliemaejune Жыл бұрын
I have the same thoughts about vessel sinks: where are you putting the soap??? I like the way they look, but they're just awkward to use. Seems like you'd need a shelf of some kind to set products on so you can actually reach them.

I would never use a sit-down vanity in a bathroom. We did put in a different cabinet/sinks in our master bath (at the same time we removed the **carpet** that was in there. OY! Carpet in bathrooms!)

I know it is considered basic now to have two sinks in the master bathroom, but I just don't get it. It is an extra expense, extra cleaning and pretty privileged to need a sink for one person. Are there any single sink designs that you would consider a stylishly alternative to the dual sink bathroom?
@GarrettLeChic3 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura! There are many possibilities for stylish single sinks depending on your taste and the overall look you are trying to achieve. I would definitely take your time and look around in stores and even online. Also, I would definitely get a licensed contractor involved to see what is possible in your situation, and for them to do the installation and plumbing work. However, I think it's very important that the sink be proportionate to size of the countertop/vanity. Thanks for your support, and Happy New Year!

I saw a picture of a bathroom that had a freestanding tub, and in front of it was a shower door that went to the floor giving enough space between the tub and door for the shower heads and to stand and take a shower. Would this work in a small bathroom, with the shower door being directly in front of the freestanding tub, and standing in the tub for the shower (as I do now)? Either way, proper floor drainage would need to be installed.
