As a long time Panasonic user, I agree everything you said about the Panasonic, Sony and Canon cameras. But I think you missed the ball with Nikon. They have gone all out with the Z9, with 8K 60p, shutter angle, waveforms, internal Prores/Prores RAW and even a new internal N-RAW codec which seems very similar to Blackmagic's BRAW format. Granted its price is 5500$ and above the threshold you have set for this video, but I'am very excited for these features to trickle down to their cheaper more compact bodies. The S lenses are all breathing corrected, so Nikon seems to be heading in the right direction as far as video is concerned. It the system that i'am most excited about.

I agree the Z9 looks amazing, but he hasn't had his hands on it yet. Also, Nikon needs to add a bunch of features that Panasonic already has: timecode port, shutter angle, true 24 and 48fps, waveform. I'll also take built-in ND, vectorscope, XLR inputs and more.

I’ve preordered the Z9 as my photography camera, I am hoping that I can get good video footage for my needs. Caleb’s point is 💯. Almost two years later, and you predicted the future - a bunch of these brands listened to you. Nikon: release video-beast Z8/9 Panasonic: added PDAF with the S5ii Sony: released the FX30 Fuji: loaded an APS-C with cinema specs in the XH2 Canon: removed 30-minute record limit from their cameras I will say, if you made this list today, Canon would be bumped much lower. Their cameras still overheat, they rob the non-cinema models of C-Log 2 dynamic range, no full hdmi, and obviously the 3rd-party lens issue.

@@dslrvideoshooter yeah, I think you're right, and Canon is far from awful but it can't be placed in the same league as Sony. It only really beats it on colour out the camera but Sony smashes Canon in the rest, as your thumbnail suggests 🤣. Still a great video, perfectly timed for Black Friday. I started out Canon, moved to Lumix G Series but stuck with Sigma glass, and it was a close call just now but I'm sticking with Lumix but moving up full frame to the S5. I picked it over the A7IV just on price, really and the S5 is £300 off right now. I pull focus manually and for interviews, the AF is good enough. I'm a hybrid shooter and now I don't have to worry about moving over to a new system, even if it's better, and smash thousands on the G master lenses, something I'm not prepared to do. The one thing that wasn't factored into this was price point. If all these were priced at a similar price point I would agree with the ranking a bit more, but with a price cap of $5000 there are vastly different cameras and feature sets at these price points. For example the Blackmagic Pocket 4k is offering a near untouchable image format at close to the lowest 5th of this price bracket, and I feel one is sacrificing the "niceties" to achieve that price point. If we also factor price into the equation then Blackmagic deserves a higher ranking given it also has an incredible user interface experience when compared to the likes of some of these other cameras that cost almost 3 times it's price. That means one could in theory have multiple cameras which in my opinion is a potentially a bigger deal then having autofocus for certain types of video/film shooting.

Right on, Caleb! If I were to add to the improvements Canon can make to their cameras for video, it would be to also increase their dynamic range. They have consistently limited their DSLRs and mirrorless cameras to 12 stops of dynamic range, even in their own RAW codec. If they were to perhaps maybe adjust their log curves or something in order to bring their dynamic range to about 14 or more stops, then I would be more inclined to lean towards Canon along with no overheating and record limits.

We all know the Gh6 for all of its improvements and crazy specs it may have, still won’t have PDAF. At this point it’s a philosophical issue with the company leadership and given it’s based in Japan, likely won’t see any improvements in that department for a while. X-H2 I think has potential to be a serious pseudo cine camera, the only issue is that they still do not have any good video AF lenses, so unless they announce them together, I don’t know how much AF improvements we’ll see. Perhaps with them letting Sigma and Tamron make some lenses now that will change.

Eliminated the 2 mentioned problems (record limits and overheating) by buying Ninja V and will be upgrading to Ninja V+ now that they have the $999 promo. With original 24-70 lenses on both cameras and taking that Ninja V+ promo into account price difference is around $1,000 in Sonys favour. A Lumix S5 is around £1500 in the UK, with 20-60. Sometimes less, depending on trade in deals. That puts the S5 half to a third the price of the competition. Better autofocus would be handy for vloggers, but AF is definitely usable with appropriate settings (-1 speed, -3 sensitivity for most of my shooting). If Sony style AF makes the S5 cost the same as other brands, no thanks, the Lumix beats everyone for video. Sub 5k is too big a range from entry level. Interesting comparison even so.

That one improvement would remove SO much hassle and bulk from my kit - and I'm sure I'm not alone. Anyone who's stepped away from a camera on a tripod to have their earbuds ripped out unexpectedly, or pull the tripod down, upvote this comment! =) And if we're going EXTRA hard, those "A" cameras also have to have internal RAW recording and accept standard SSDs as media, like the Ninja V but built in.

I think whats make a good camera brand is that what they're offering for the price range, in terms of features, lens choice . etc (and i think Panasonic are really good at making budget friendly cam with cool features) 🙌. If they can improve their AF they'll be a tough competitor to other brands.

Great video, Caleb. I agree. You know what is funny? Canon EOS M with MagicLantern can record probably for days straight on h264, but may even 1080p raw without overheating. The only thing limiting time on that old camera is power and sd card. You can solve the power but I don't think you can do much about the SD Card other than get a 1TB.

Hey great video thanks, one question please what camera would you recommend for cooking videos 1080 60fps maybe 120fps for slowmo needs to have good stabilization for handheld shots over food moving and great autofocus so that when moving over different plates it focuses everything as we go over it and not lacking behind making the video unsharp, what are the budget options for this I does not have to be the latest model? thanks

I own both a Panasonic and a Nikon and every time I pick up the Panasonic I remember I cannot rely on autofocus lol. It's almost non existent. Nikon's got a really impressive autofocus along with fantastic straight out of camera colours. Sorry if it's a "boring" brand to you lol, their Z line is simply amazing

I started with a D5300 waaay back. I liked Nikon cameras, but I think Caleb is referring more to their lack of innovation or significant breakthrough in the video space to make people pay attention. The only thing I saw Nikon do that other companies picked up on was raw over HDMI for the Atomos Ninia V. I’m glad they did that.

From what I recall that 30 minute limit is a legal/tax thing, where if a camera films under it, it's a photo camera but longer and it's a video camera which adds some sort of hassle enough to warrant it. Rusty on the details, but that's why that exists.

I have been using an R6 for about a year now, always shooting in 4k25 or 4k50 (except for a couple of times when I needed 100fps) and I have never ever had it overheat. My longest simultaneous recording was about 45 minutes (one tiny stop at 30min) and no issues with overheating at all. So for me and my use, overheating is not an issue by any means with the R6, but damn that 30min limit bugs me. It's not a huge deal for me, but it would be such an easy firmware fix, it makes no sense to have it there. Great video!

Thank you for this awesome video, great job! One topic that is always neglected is SOUND! Man, if these cameras could have at least one XLR input with (optional) phantom power, plus 32 bit float recording, life would be perfect! No more bulky external sound recorders, less or no external microphone wiring and no more need to sync audio in post. And why 32 bit float? Because of the insane dynamic range, which will make it impossible to clip your audio or to introduce a lot of noise when amplifying very low sound (check out recorders like Zoom F6, Sound Devices Mixpre 3 ii or Tascam Portacapture X8).

A couple of weeks ago, I took part in a Canon survey and there was one particularly interesting question with regard to this video: They asked how important the participants in that survey think it would be to not have the 30 minute record limit. I have not yet seen the results of that survey, but at least it shows that there must be some people at Canon considering this.

It’s very occasional for me to dislike a video on KZbin, and it looks like it won’t matter for a long time since KZbin’s going to hide dislikes soon. Anyways ! The reason why I did here is I feel like you lacked objectivity and fairness on all those brands. Even the ones that I’m not a huge fan of. You are comparing camera brands for videos but for most of them, you’re comparing stills cameras that also do videos (canon, Panasonic, Nikon, Fuji…). That works for people who want to buy cameras that do both, but that’s not the whole picture. For instance, when you say that blackmahic should go boxed cameras , they already did. It’s just not what the BMPCC is. Panasonic to make a camera that is more video targeted ? They have the B1h that does exactly that ! Canon having trouble with recording limits ? How about the C100 or the C70? I understand what you did, meaning you went for DSLR shaped cameras (that being said the ZCam is not) but again that’s not the whole picture and i think that comparing camera brands for video based on cameras that are designed as an extra feature is not ideal I hope you won’t get my comment wrong and I usually like your content A LOT but heh I felt like my input would be useful there

I remember a few years ago when I was ready to upgrade from my canon 70d, the 90d was out, but I didn't want it because of the 30 minute record limit. I was pushed to the a6400 and honestly I really like that camera. I'm planning on buying the a6600 in addition to it and moving away from my canon c100. Would really love the fs3 or an a7000 with 10 bit 4:2:2 codecs. We all know Sony will have something for us crop sensor people. They're the real MVP!

You want the small form factor, the overheating is going to come with it. Chips get hot. Better manual fan control would be great in smaller cameras, but I feel what it would take to combat the heating problems would still get criticised. I've owned a Red Scarlet, Epic and Dragon, and while they get criticised for their loud fan, the control options they have for managing the speeds are incredibly useful.

I 100% agree with this list. I would even put Sony at an A. As someone who has migrated from Canon to Sony, it’s flawless. I don’t get deep into the technical stuff like codecs and bitrates so I can’t speak to that. I realize those are some things holding it back from an A. I also had a Z Cam for a bit, great image. Really have to rig those things out to make them usable for run and gun.

*Does black magic have autofocus? Would it be good for a new KZbinr, zoom calls, etc.* I’m looking at the Sony A7c or Sony A7IV with a 20 or 24mm f1.4 or 1.8 Lens. Can you get the s-cinetone colours during zoom calls? Also, can you use the camera mic as a mic for zoom calls? Mainly the Sony microphone?
