I totally understand that the ergonomics are awful if you are trying to use it out of the box. That being said, if you rig it up and use it as a cinema camera, it is literally unbeatable for the price. I think even with the body style they chose, this camera really isn't meant to be used as a mirrorless or dslr style camera ergonomically. I really wish they just did a modular cube design like the Red Komodo, but I can get over that very easily due to price and image quality. I personally would 100% recommend this camera for people who plan on rigging it out. If you plan on using it out of the box, Id consider buying something else.

Your complaint about the ergonomics is very strange to me. I own the 6K pro and not once has this problem occurred to me. Picking up my camera after hearing you complain just to see where my left hand would naturally gravitate to I found my left hand automatically rested right on the snout. It feels perfectly fine and it's so strange to me that anyone can pick this camera up and be at a loss as to where to place their left hand but here we are. Man, you said all. Totally agreed. I've looking to buy this camera as first camera (not my first cam to handle, I have a job in a film company and we use to operate Sony and Canon cameras) and everyone that is saying tha BMPCC6PRO is not ergonomic, battery sucks is just trying to compare to A7SII or A7III. This fellas looks that can't see that for the price of an A7III you have 6K BRAW 50fps, ND filter Built In, full size HDMI, 2 mini XLR connector, one of the best color science for the price and false color inside camera too. I guess those guys that talk about "ergonomics, battery wont last" it's suffering for the past of the launch of pocket 4k. Sorry, but the handling "issue" you're going on about is so disingenuous that I felt compelled to comment. You put that Sigma 18-35mm on any of those cameras you got sitting on your desk and you got the same problem, although I don't even see the problem in resting your palm on the base of the lens instead of the side of the camera. I use this camera almost daily with that lens and I honestly don't see how it is awful. And taking a point away because the LCD tint issue was addressed in a firmware update and not perfect out of the box? Come on :) If I nitpicked to this degree every camera out there is awful.

Exactly this, you can't even use this camera on its own for the most part without any additional rigging. Sure you could use it as is as a DSLR camera cinematographer but cmon, this is a cinema camera. The red he showed had an additional handle and whatnot attached to it. Same could be in this case. You could get small rig or tilt a handles. Hell I don't even imagine using this camera handheld like he did with his hand under the lens. Are you kidding me? You're getting this camera to have your hand on the lens when adjusting focus? What happened to follow focuses or wireless focuses? There is no way this camera is getting rocked on its own like this unless it's going to be used by some amateur wedding photographers. This is not a run and gun camera and it never was advertised as. Sure it's called the pocket but it also says "CINEMA", which involves then modularity. You have to rig it.

My team got this camera right when it came out. For the first few months without a rig, using it was almost impossible, it's ergonomics are really annoying. Once cages were finally being produced, getting it rigged up with a specific combo of handles really worked for me, and now it's a dream to shoot with. I don't have to touch the nasty plastic, and the cage's ergonomics are way better and help with the weight distribution. Since it was always our plan to rig it up, this worked great for us, though I have to agree I really with the camera was better without a cage. If you are planning or willing to cage this beast of a camera, I really don't think it can be beat for the price range it's incredible to work with RAW footage that's so high quality at this price point.

God I want this camera so bad. Every time I hear someone break down the positives and ask if the negatives are worth it I don't even think twice when I say yes. If you are an aspiring filmmaker, you want the most features and control as possible on a budget. Rigs on cinema cameras are almost always a cumbersome mess of cables, antennae, operating equipment, and monitors anyway, and the majority of moving shots are still going to be on some sort of steadicam or or dolly system because the hand-held look doesn't apply. The value of this camera so outweighs the cost it's insane.

Love the video. As I also have a BMPCC 6K Pro with that 18-35, I've got some suggestions to help you out Caleb. 1st, pull your left hand back when trying to hold the camera. I agree it feels weird if it's really far out, but that bump out where the lens is mounted is enough to have the side of your palm rest there while your index, middle, and ring finger are on the lens. For battery life, so far I've found that the battery grip is the most compact solution for triple the run time, coming to about 3 hours for me on average. It also changes the ergonomics to be more like a 1DX with grip. V-mount batteries are great for long run times, but travelling with V-mount chargers is never fun. As for tipping over, I've found the easiest thing is just use a long Manfrotto style quick release plate, something like 4+ inches long with most of it pushed forward and under the lens. That will keep it from tipping forward.

Busted out my old Canon F-1n and the Tokina 80-200mm lens to approximate the holding position. For me, it's like the old days of shooting with the left hand supporting the lens and the left elbow pushing against the torso. Not bad, but for long shots that need stability: difficult. Though I suspect that the best way to really optimize this camera is to rig it up with 15mm rails and all the accessories - including V-mount battery.

I don't disagree entirely but IMO I don't think it's THAT bad to shoot with. I've filmed 3-4 weddings with the 6K pro and plenty of other gigs. A few cage-less, with a neck strap, and a few completely rigged out. I find myself resting my palm on the rails positioned under the lens to pull focus and my right hand on the grip. I will be using the half-cage in the future though because I have smaller hands and holding onto the grip WITH the cage is pretty difficult. Let's all hope for a CUBE shaped BM camera in the near future. LOL

Well of course, and the updates to make the camera better have been a major plus side, just add in the extra battery pack and you have 3 batteries 1 interior and 2exterior in at once and can change batteries without having to stop recording (because of the interior battery), then just through on a cage or gimbal (with counter weight if needed) and you’re all set

I have the regular Pocket 6K and I absolutely love this thing. I have never been so obsessed with a cameras quality and features. It's an absolute blast to work with and I highly recommend it to anyone interested. It may not always be the easiest camera to film with but I don't know that that is exactly the point.

I'm a 6K Pro owner. It's either on a tripod, monopod or Easyrig Minimax so the form factor is not an issue. I also added an NP-F battery plate so when paired with a 970 series I get a few hours. All problems solved.

Can u leave the battery inside at the same time? I've heard it can fry the HDMI port. But that's what I'm doing with the 4k too and never had issues using the 12v npf plate output while leaving the Canon lp6 inside.
@evanthecameraman
@evanthecameraman 3 жыл бұрын
@@Nils_Samp Yes, I do which allows me to hot swap NP-F batteries. The HDMI port frying happens when you have a monitor plugged in the HDMI, then plug power into the monitor or camera after and in rare circumstances the positive line connects before the negative/ground touches. In that situation the electricity flows through the HDMI port and fries it. So not only is it unlikely to happen but it won’t happen if you leave all the cables plugged in before adding your external batteries.

@@evanthecameraman so i have the smallrig plate . I use the 12v out for the p6k and i also use the 7v out for my monitor. I don't add a battery to the monitor. And i would leave the npf550 in the cam. Would that be alright?

Do you think a strategically rigged baseplate battery could help, both as a battery booster and place for your left hand to rest?
@Shauny_D
@Shauny_D 3 жыл бұрын
I use the pocket and the pocket pro, but because i use the ronin gimbals i need an offset camera plate the offset plate (lampart is what i use) solves the hand rest problem easy. You can use 2 plates as well but any camera plate seems to help the hand grip with how you mention liking shooting. I personally love as a 6’5” dude the med format from the hip feel and the ergonomics work better for me than the c100 or fs5 options. I’ll still grab the ursa more often if i’m not flying but dang gotta love these pockets.

I've shot a bunch of videos with my 6k Pro and I disagree with pretty much your entire complaint department. Is the camera slightly big and clunky? For sure, but 'Awful' is pretty far fetched and over-dramatic. The camera is absolutely ridiculous quality for the money. 99% of people using it will be rigging it up with a follow focus or something similar. The whole 'palm' complaint is super strange and VERY specific to only you! :)

I think the best thing blackmagic design could’ve done was a CUBE rather than anything else. I guess, as I said before, they didn’t want to compromise the nice screen, but yes, as you said, the ergonomics sucks as well as the battery life. I had to rig it up in order to work better, but of course, now it’s heavier. Great video as always, man. Cheers

The camera is awful because you have trouble holding it and the screen colours may be slightly off but can be adjusted? All you need is a cage with rails and that will solve the issue, giving you a place to put your hand under, or even mount a follow focus too and grip onto that - its not an awful camera, it may just have a design thats unlike your other cameras.
