Mk5 r32 US here. This car requires a unique driving style to get the most out of the corners. It won’t beat you off the line but it will keep in with cars that are crazy out of its league. For instance, if you make sure you are in the mid of the rev range, and take the turn with power on as much as you can. This will engage the awd and push you through the turn. The car in my opinion responds best to being driven in manual mode once you learn the car well and learn when the car needs to “breath” i as I say, to be able to stay on the power in curves. The awd and the rear haldex diff require loving about every 20 to 45 thousand miles. As far as the muscle car of hot hatches, I thought I was the only one who said that! It’s so true. Driving the car from DC to Ohio / Detroit on the curvy turnpikes showed me how well this car handles itself at higher speeds with curves that most cars take while braking. This car is a drivers car, a car that will always surprise you with its abilities - but never shock you with crazy HP. With some nice OEM + upgrades, you can bring this into the 2020s with a personality that lost other cars can’t offer today. I love my little car.

As a previous Mk5 GTI and current Mk5 R32 owner, I agree the driving style you described is how to drive this car. The GTi feels like it turns in quicker due to the lighter front end but AWD makes the R32 faster and more balanced out of slow corners and fast bends with the pedal down.

I had this bottle opener still in mine. Was one of the coolest gadgets. Loved my R32, also with the DSG. I knew that car was never "the fastest, the best the most economic" hot hatch. But the sound excused for everything. And the fact that I was able to drive around when everything was covered in snow, where the other fwd and rwd cars had problems even getting out of their parking lots 😄 I miss mine. But now I own a Passat CC with the 3.6 VR6. Even more punch than the R32 but stock sound is too quiet. I have to change that sooner or later.

Mk5 R32, in Australia here. I love mine so much that I went a long way to find an exact replacement when I crashed the first one. I'm super glad that the roads here don't get snow or ice, so the cars here aren't rusty anywhere near as much as the US or UK. I really want to take mine to the track to push it hard and learn its limits, but I also want to upgrade the suspension a bit first, with sway bars, bushes, and all the other good stuff.

Another Aus R32 owner; I've tracked mine and it's great fun. Not GTI fast on the straights but in the corners it grips insanely well. Dont bother with bigger brakes, just get high temp pads, brembo branded factory spec rotors and sticky tyres like re003, etc. and it will be perfect. Maybe rear sway bar if you're a good driver on the limit and can play around with trail braking at speed. Dont bother with coilovers, dont bother with 17Z conversion. Have fun!

Great video, always nice to see someone covering these gems. I've owned a few VR6s over the years, including a Corrado, A Mk4 R32 and a 3.2 swapped mk2 golf. The main highlights I'd say is the soundtrack and linear power delivery on these engines. The mk4 felt quite a lot more special than a mk5 I thought, having a much higher quality interior with the excellent Konig seats. Couple of drawbacks I can think of is the cost of some components are extremely expensive. A few examples I can think of is the cost of a timing chain change and the brake discs on the front of the Mk4 (over 200 quid a side for aftermarket ones!). Genuinely though, it's the perfect engine swap into a mk1 or mk2. Transforms the cars into absolute weapons.

I also purchased mine from Ben Keighan motor company in November 21. Black 5 door DSG, purchased on 27K now sits on 41K! Feels like a 3/4 year old car. A 7 year ceramic coat helps keeping the paintwork in great condition (Matrix) Stock example bar the resonator delete & flap mod & a set of spacers. Remove the foam inserts from the front wings, this will help with rust prevention! Mine currently returns 39+MPG a keeper for sure. Great video 😎🙏

Owned a MKV R32 when I lived in Japan. I loved the car but the worst thing that happened was that the weight of the engine really put a lot of stress on the front suspension and I had to order a kit to beef it up. One major factor, when I brought it from Okinawa to Mainland Japan was going over train tracks. This is where the problems were triggered with my car. I had mine in the shop more times than I could care to think about.

The R32 MK5 is the best Golf ever made imo, people might like the Mk4 design wise but the Mk 5 is the biggest upgrade in car dynamics the Golf has ever had and atleast in stock form the MK5 has had actual effort by the engineers to make it sound as best as possible at the time. if it had more suitable highway gearing it would be the most ideal car ever imo, not sure why the 6th gear is soo tight(fully agree it hurts the economy), As an Australian who has Fuel prices closer to US prices it is still a doable daily even with a modest salary but maintenance is an issue if the one you choose hasn't had the big things done like mass flywheel or timing chain, but if you keep a few grand spare in prep you will be ok with it, I luck out on all the rust stuff which will never be an issue for me. For me it's a lifer car I don't earn the most money but every single time I drive this car it just reminds me why I bought it, having the 2 door in the blue also helps. also not to nick pick but cupholder wise doesn't the centre qualifiy? My car still has the VW bottle opener thing that separates the two cup holders and for me it's done a good job of being a front cup holder for me so I'm not sure on your criticism on that(I usually use the first cup holder to hold my phone and the second to hold a cup), I have owned a current gen Mazda 2 which was a little better on that but the R32 is still in the ball park regarding it from my view plus the door has atleast one good holder for a cup even a coffee cup without spilling it, my last Mazda 2 was much worse on the door cup holder.

@@HSGAutomotive an easy ebay pickup if you really want it luckily, still confused why the last gear is soo tight, the engine and transmission are against each other, the engine is certainly more on the lazy side while the gear ratio feels like a 90s Type R Honda(the engine would prefer to be in the 55-75mph range for cruising but the trans wants to keep it under 55mph), I know many in UK go for Japanese imports but I think Australia is probably better due to the much less lower rust issues, prices here are probably one of the lowest of all countries outside Europe(easy to find a good condition DSG for 8k pounds about 10k pounds for a good maintained low kms manual with no Rust issues at all).

Thanks for the awesome video. I appreciate the effort you’ve made to produce a well rounded, practical guide outlining both the joys & pitfalls of owing such a unique car. I recently joined the R32 club with the purchase of a blue 3 door, manual, with Recaro Wingbacks, Sun roof & low kms) & couldn’t be happier with it overall. My only real disappointment is as you mentioned the lack of a 7th gear or at least a considerably taller 6th gear for highway use. It’s the one area the designers really seemed to drop the ball. Late 30s to early 40s mpg figures should have been achievable if this had been implemented. Otherwise the car is amazing & I can’t help but smile every time I’m behind the wheel. I also have an immaculate low km Mk6 Golf R (3 doors DSG) so the contrast between the 2 means whichever one I drive I get a similar but different experience. Love these cars. Keep up the good work mate…👏🏻

I owned a VW R32 MY 2008, I loved how comfortable it was, it had a lot of grip, it was great in the snow, the engine was very torquey and sounded great, the brakes were great, it was very stable on the highway. What I didn't like was it wasn't that fast, it loved to understeer, everything squeaked. the rotors had groves in them which shook the steering wheel, it ate the inside of the tires quickly and the worse part was the DSG it just sucked (it will make you dance if you're stuck in slow traffic and the car will roll back if you tried to start driving on a hill) and it was the reason I got rid of the car.

Center console has two cup holders in the USA version. The lack of a cubby there in the Japanese version might be due to some law because it’s an AWD car , and they didn’t want a hole over a driveshaft. Perhaps the US versions with cup holders are “special part order” afterwards…

Pretty easy, the best is the sound, the worst is the performance.

There is only one exhaust option , and that is the Miltek non-resonated system. No discussion

Nah. Drove one with it, not interested in a tinny rasp. Big motors should sound deep, not like Vtecs

Depends what you compare it to tbh, but compared to the cars I’d usually buy it’s not too expensive for general servicing and maintenance

I have 2004 r32 with tectonics camshaft, giac software with camshaft files with, bilsteen sport shock, h&r sport springs h&r front &rear sway bars ,I did all the maintenance that the car requires, and the result is ,she running like a champion, now is not the fastest car out there, but I wouldn't not change my car for a much faster new wolkswagen r( but of course this is my personal opinion) so for you people out who as on 2004 or 2005 r32 enjoy this wonderful cars ,have fun and always be safe, ciao

@@HSGAutomotive I’ve had them both. Mk4 and 5. Pulling everyone’s pants down with that £630 tax a year. It’s outrageous. This is the reason prices have fallen with the MK5 and nobody wants it. Won’t be long before it’s nearly £700.. somebody needs to have a word. I did really enjoy them as cars. Petrol wasn’t as bad as everyone makes out. The MK5 was better on fuel. Was decent on long runs.
