I went to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, at October 1-11 (2024) and it was very nice: trains and tourist spots not so crowded, weather was still warm and also a few rainy days. Hotel prices were low. Thank you for this video, very useful 👍

Actually the weather was not as good as You say: I was there too, the very first days of october 2024 had been SO hot and humid: I had honestly never thought I'd see people (local Japanese, too) using "air conditioned jackets" and sun umbrella and "clinging" to every spec of shade available, all of this in october....😅😅😅 In Tokyo, around 9/10 of October, there had been a HUGE rainshower.... some trains had problems at Shinagawa Station and also around Keikyu-Kamata and train circulation had a brief "blackout" caused, by heavy rain....😅😅

@@axios101 hehe I suppose it´s all about point of view: I live in a hot desert with 42 celsius summer and -2 celsius winter, with luckily 20 rainy days in a year 😅🏜 So, the humid and hot weather, or even the rainy days were bearable and marvelous to me 🤩 Actually I cancelled a trip to Kamakura because of those rainy days in Tokyo, but still I enjoyed the city very much 🤗 Didn't know about the train problems those days 🙊

Really enjoying watching you present this discussion point. I would like to add the reason I am going to Japan in April, it's not sakura, it's Star Wars Celebration. You may find thousands of foreigners visiting makuhari messe late April (Easter) to attend a massive star wars themed comic con. Most may make a holiday out of it and stay before and after SWC. Myself included.

Dude, the prob with Golden Week is that some places are not in business. Coming in the summer is okay, but a typhoon could ruin your schedule. I once had to reschedule my flight and all booked activities because of that. Remember, the climate has changed drastically in the past years. So, it's now very tricky when it comes to the weather.

I was just there from aug 10 to aug 25, and I can confirm it was hot and humid! Also can confirm the crowds in Kyoto and Osaka were insane! However, if you are like me, and heat and humidity can't keep you down there is a lot going on to enjoy. Like he said, Obon is happening and the Gozan Okuribi Ritual Fires in Kyoto, Arima onsen area was pretty quiet and all in all the weather was solid. This year will be an October trip as its time to see the fall foliage and maybe a mountain peak or two. Fuji-san trip 2 in 2026! Bring it on Fujinomiya (up) and Gotemba (down)!

2024 Tokyo didn't feel bad for me between March and April during cherry blossom season, but maybe it's because I'm from a big city (San Francisco) and am used to crowds and cramped spaces? The only bad time for me was during rush hour evening at Shinjuku station. Packed in trains like sardines. I think the mix of rush hour and also Shinjuku station being nightlife destination, made it extra crowded at that time. Other than that, it was fine outside the trains though, like Kabukicho wasn't that crowded (at least no noticeable inconvenience). Some specific places like Pokemon store in Shibuya PARCO were uncomfortably crowded (and as a result also some empty shelves/sold out stuff), but Shibuya itself was normal and fine to walk around in (obviously more crowded by the Scramble crossing). Harajuku at Takeshita street when I went was not crowded at all, not sure why since I always hear people say it's packed everyday and it was a Friday afternoon but it felt really pleasant, not empty but not crowded. Maybe because Takeshita st has less stores open than before. Ikebukuro was all around fine, nothing unusual and nothing packed... except Animate store that was very packed with long lines to check out purchases. But moving around the aisles was ok. Akihabara the cramped figure stores like Surugaya have a feeling of being crowded, but it's only because of the cramped aisles that makes it difficult to move around even if only one person is in the aisle, not crowded from quantity of people, just from lack of space. Sometimes in the gift shops in Disneyland/sea were a bit uncomfortably crowded too, but not that bad, like not that different from smaller stores in USA big cities, just gotta be patient and wait for someone to finish and move out the way when shopping/browsing stores. Disneyland also didn't have too bad lines for rides, and the park in general wasn't overly crowded to walk around in. There was a cherry blossom tree in bloom in the park too. We were able to ride everything with normal ticket. DisneySEA had longer lines though, otherwise wasn't too crowded to walk around in either.

In Kyushu, March is warmer than Kanto, and cherry blossoms can be enjoyed from the middle of the month. Also in March, Hinamatsuri (Girls' Festival) events are held in many places. I am sure you will enjoy your visit to Japan no matter when you come. However, it may be best to avoid the rainy season from June to the beginning of July, when it rains a lot and humidity is high.

I think May is the best time to travel around Japan without the Golden Week. It's not hot, it's not cold, it's not raining and the sunshine is long. It seems that many Japanese cancelled their return trips or trips during last year's Golden Week because of the news that there might be an earthquake. In other words, last year was an exception, and Golden Week should be avoided as a general rule.

I have already been to Japan 7 times and also for longer periods of time. I always prefer to be there from mid-September to mid-December. I was also in Japan from March to the end of May. There are generally always a lot of visitors there. you just have to know how and where to best avoid these crowds. and you should worry less about expensive flights or accommodation. If someone really wants to go to Japan, they pay these prices and if that seems too high, then Japan is not the right country for these people. 😁

The rule of the thumb is to avoid traveling to the places the other are also going to. I’ve been visiting Japan two to three times a year and the cost of accommodation is rapidly getting higher than the last time every visit, ridiculously high nowadays though in October and February. I would say there are no good times to go to Japan in 2025. For vacation, I plan to find destinations that are less popular this year, def not Japan/Europe.

thanks for the feedback and for sure, this was a first so it wasn't as smooth as I prefered, but I will definitely look to get better at it each time ^^

Unfortunately, 3 days of my 2 week holiday will be during golden week, but the rest is offpeak/regular season. Hopefully that means it won't be much of an issue, especially since I will be in Tokyo for the 3 days of golden week (heard Tokyo is less busy than Kyoto etc at that time)

Thanks for this informative video :) I've been to Japan 4x and planning to visit Hokkaido with my Mom on Aug 18th week to celebrate her birthday. But you mentioned its one of the worst times to come, is it too humid, expensive and crowded? Any chance that we can still view the lavender flower fields? Thanks! Just to share, I was in Japan during Labor Thanksgiving Day 2023 & 2024 - it was too packed with tourists even on countryside (Yufuin, Oita and Kanazawa)!
@yamatrips16 күн бұрын
Thank you ^^ The lavender fields of Furano and surrounding areas bloom around July. Last year I visited Hokkaido around mid August and it was almost gone. Temperature was around 20 degrees around the northern border, but Sapporo and lower areas might be around 25-30 depending on the day but not nearly as bad as other areas so you guys should be okay. I might recommend looking into Rishiri and Rebun Islands to the North as they were my favorite islands. Shiretoko Peninsula is also fantastic choice if you guys love nature and salmon.

January should be skipped. People trying to visit shrines/temples during the first week of the new year causing locals to spend hours waiting in line to do their new years stuff. Also if people google the Cherrybloosom schedule they will see when the best timea are to visit to see them since its not the same everywhere.

Great video. Do you have the link for the JR-East 2025 Peak Schedule? I was in Tokyo and Kyoto September 2024 and visited shrines and would like to come back to visit castles which I have not done research yet to see if they are worth visiting.

May I know if you have any recommendations for areas 2 hours travel out from around Kyoto or osaka that would still have cherry blossoms in mid/late April? Thank you so much for the video!! 😊
@yamatrips17 күн бұрын
Yoshino in Nara is good until mid April but for late April, you need to go north quite far to find the colder regions. I'd look into areas around Mt. Fuji and also Nagano for late April.

How about the weather on march is it still cold?
@yamatrips17 күн бұрын
Indeed, March is what we call the changing of season with spring winds. It can get especially cold when it rains, which is quite frequent in March after the dry winter. I would make sure to bring wind jacket and waterproof wears. Temperature can vary depending on the area but central Japan will be between 15~20 degrees.

Kyoto is always crowded but what you can do is do early morning activities and evening. During midday it might be a bit hard to take nice photos
