Totally agree. You needed all those previous experiences to be where you are today. I believe art style isn’t something a person sets out to consciously find. It’s not possible. You can mimic other styles, yes, but you can’t just find your own out there because it comes from within. Instead, your art style develops organically as you grow as an artist, just like your personality develops over time through life experiences. You explained it perfectly. And your style definitely isn’t photorealism anymore. Anyone who says it is doesn’t really know what photorealism is. In this painting, it looks realistic from a distance, but get closer and you can see the brushwork and the personality shine through. Well done. ❤

This is something I have learnt recently. I had always been good at drawing and painting whatever was in my head. Then I had an art teacher who taught me how to use a reference. This was great at first because it helped me observe things especially colour. But I’ve found that I had lost the ability to draw and paint without a picture and it felt like I could only copy other people’s work, and not create what is in my head. Watching your videos and others have helped me learn that I need to rebuild my confidence in myself, and not worry about painting the correct way. Thank you for sharing your journey!

Yes that's very true. I am 13 years old boy in india and i create animal painting and drawings. When i was 11,there i started my journey (although i used to draw at age 6 till 11) but on 11, i started to take art seriously. Now I'm 13, i have gained knowledge from many artists but because of you, i have gained my 60% of knowledge from you only. So thank you so much and keep creating better and quality artworks. Good luck for your future paintings!

Wonderful advice that I will be putting into practice with my own art. Your comment about observing and experiencing what you paint is so true. I was at the zoo, and there was a cougar that was staring directly at me as if he was thinking "If these bars were not here I'd eat you for lunch". I did some sketches and took a photo for reference. The painting is in my dining room and recently my husband said to me the cougar keeps staring at him and it's a little unnerving. Guess my first hand experience came through successfully in my art!

This is excellent. I really want to get back into making Art. I always have traced, when I have even bothered to find the energy to do art that is! And I have done the detailed fur etc etc and quite well at times yet it always left me feeling so tired and stiff as it took SO LONG. I like this idea of free handing more. I shall watch a few of your videos and try and give something a go that is less 'rigid' and too perfect which then misses its mark anyway. I have subscribed today, the 13th December 2024. It's giving me hope to get back into thinking of myself as a painter, so thank you for this. Not sure of your name yet?...

Sometimes, when you feel lost and start looking for yourself, you may end up realizing that you weren't lost at all. Whatever you find for yourself and your style as an artist, I wish you to be happy with it, and we (your fans) will be happy with you. Thank you for sharing this difficult journey with us!

Hi buddy photo realism I don’t think is a bad thing Disney has made a fortune out of realism I do like your style but to tell the difference between a picture and a painting I like 👍 that. It takes talent to do that. I really like your paintings you are talented well done. Ian from Australia

Thanks Daniel, some great advise about how to develop as an artist. Learning art is not really like learning anything else like maths or science, where we get the same answers. It's about finding yourself and translating it in art or craft and the same thing should be different depending on who creates it. 🙂

I find that I prefer to use my imagination over a photograph. If I'm using a photo, I often catch myself trying too hard to copy the photo and getting frustrated. I get much better results if I put the photo away after my initial sketch.

I'm a total beginner. I liked to draw cartoons at age 5, then continued, stopped, and started again... with on-and-off mediocre results. I am not gifted and focused on drawing but on everything artistic/creative (writing, photography, dancing... etc.). And now, being bedridden with crutches for, I hope, not many months, I was drawn again to drawing because, hey, why not? Then I saw what people were producing, and I got totally discouraged. But I remember one thing from my other creative passions. I have a website that has become popular for a while, and people clearly recognize my writing style and photos. I was awe-struck! I don't know what I did to reach this result, but I have gotten more and more feedback. I started writing in English at age 35 and took photography seriously later. So I'm thinking that maybe if I apply myself enough, try to stay patient, and learn the basics (I swear I can't even use shading properly or draw a hand), I will have the freedom to somehow make my "art" (now it's ridiculous to call it like that) recognizable. I love some subjects and topics more than others: faces/portraits and nude details under sheer fabrics. But again, I need more technique. My photos are 100% much better in that regard. They're not perfect, but I have my style, as well as my writing style. Funnily enough, I'm starting to see a pattern. What I love to photograph is also what I love to draw and what I love to talk about. So, GREAT ADVICE. I sensed it already, but you are in another galaxy from me regarding technique, so I envy your freedom as an artist. For me, a true artist is the one you immediately recognize; it doesn't matter if you like him/her. Van Gogh is not precisely my cup of tea, but find me someone who doesn't immediately recognize his style. I wish I could get to that level, but then I'll have to come to terms with the fact that I'll die under a bridge, starving and poor :D (I'm Italian; at least we have some beautiful bridges to die for!). PS, your art is AMAZING.

I once was planning on taking a more advanced course in Asian ink brush painting and when speaking with the accomplished artist about my being more than a beginner, he humbly replied that he was always a beginner. That told me a lot: keep learning, stay open to creativity, don’t get trapped in judging and just live the art and grow with it. It sounds touchy- feely but it’s actually very practical and seems to be the path you are also on. Kudos to you for your honesty and for sharing so generously. And your work exemplifies the combination of skill, creative vision and risk taking. Thank you, Daniel. ( got the name right)

Wow, incredible work! A mashup. I feel that’s what I’ve been doing. Unfortunately I’m getting up there in years and have this subconscious pressure that I’m running out of time. So I try to just enjoy the process as life steps in on a regular basis, I don’t get as much time to find my style or even just paint, as I would like to.

I think its a process. All of the painter's have done the same thing, you have to go through those things like technique and how to do certain strokes with the brush, how to blend ect. But then you finally do your own thing once you've learned those other steps which are absolutely necessary.

After over half a century of working as a landscape painter, here is my process : I start with a rough sketch in a small sketch pad. I work out the composition and where I wish to place the essential elements. I then make a quick small color sketch on an off-shoot of canvas. Then, I go out and take the photographs that will help me to create the painting. As stand alone photographs the pictures that I take have very little aesthetic value. They are merely visual bits and pieces of the real world, of value to nobody but myself. I work on my painting - a work which is not at all photo-realistic. My most valuable reference image, is always the original sketch (the original inspiration) and never the photographs. Reference photos are used to fill in the gaps in my visual knowledge - they never lead the process, but follow it… I love to see the way Daniel (the artist here) , in nearly all his videos, strive to better his work and then really does better his work. Bravo!

A big issue with using someone else's photos as references is copyright. Photos also have limitations & can be heavily edited. "Photorealism" is a bit of an oxymoron.

Thank you for your comment, I very much disagree with you as there is useful advice pretty much all the way through the video not just at the end? The bit at the end that’s the advice that most resonated with me.
