This articulation thing is 100% vegan, NO BEEF!! Happy to see you do this, though I wish you used the same examples as I did. Darwin doesn’t look up as far as the Spidey I used, but the point still stands. And yes, Hasbro can’t double ball joint a neck for squat!

The problem with the disc hinge neck is that it’s ONLY effective going forward and back. Any other angle makes the head stuck looking straight on at the natural angle of the neck. No up or down at any angle other than forward. You can’t get a low angle shot with the figure looking at the camera unless it’s from the front, and getting your figures to look up and down is important from ALL angles, not just forward and back. Also, the neck is an extremity like arms and legs. It needs to move. We are so used to marvel legends figures having stiff necks that we don’t like to see a neck cut, but allowing the neck to move is what makes the character look like a person and look dynamic. If the whole torso is leaning any given direction, the neck needs to lean as well in order to meet the shoulder for things like punching or shooting poses. Hasbro’s combo of low shoulders and stiff necks just kills the aesthetic of their Marvel Figures. I would also like to clarify that my personal favorite neck set up is having a ball at the base of the neck, and a disk hinge or double ball at the top of the neck. That way the neck can swivel, allowing the disk hinge to move in all directions rather than just forward and back. The neck will also be able to lean to allow for poses that look natural and not segmented like most legends do.

This is what kills my enjoyment of most ML, like they are so limited in natural movement. They ONLY look good in the hands of toy photographers because they can hide a lot of the limitations. On a shelf though...they just look kind of goofy. I collect so many lines, but ML just looks the most mid out of all of them.

What annoys me is that there are people at hasbro who know how to do necks properly. Black Series Clone Wars Darth Maul comes to mind. Same with ball joint waists, why is it standard on Classified Series but you almost never see it Marvel Legends.

Ball joints are the best, but Hasbro seem to struggle with them, to get the range of movement they should have. I just bought a Black Series HK-87 Assassin Droid from the Ahsoka show. It couldn't look up or down, so I heated and popped the head and carved out a little extra space for the ball joint to work. Same for the torso.

If it has issues I know of said issues and I can decide if I want the figure bad enough to over look the issues. Enjoyable video. I'm glad to hear the Rival Colectables are still alive and well. I have asked about them in the past but heard nowt about it. No hate intended, just curiosity. The prototypes look fantastic. For me Jada have a great articulation setup. Ball joint at the base of the neck coupled with a dumbell joint in the upper neck and skull, is a winner. Ball joints in the upper and lower torso. They also have pinless joints (which I like) that match the arms and leg colour. Not sure why Hasbro can't. I haven't yet had any issues of looseness with pinless figs. I have had it with pinned.

It's nice to see and hear about the philosophy of action figure making. I've been avoiding the 6" scale figures of Hasbro for quite a bit as I found so many inconsistencies in the material or quality control. I just wish that 1/15 great figures they make wouldn't be the standard: it should be more. I think another point that I wish you could bring up for a future video (a sequel) are toe joints, hips and armpit/butterfly joints. We're seeing more and more drop down hips and badly done toe joints and the latest of Mafex, Ahsoka, is a major candidate for that stuff. I know you've been showing examples across your reviews to bring the point home but I suppose it bears repeating for those calling you pessimistic or a hater of this industry.

I really wish compies would fix the hip/leg articulation point. Most companies do a huge gap there and it looks terrible, especially on the female characters wearing thongs or bikini bottoms. Great video. One other advantage to pinned joints (at least compared to how Hasbro does pinless) that you didn't mention though, is how it makes kitbashing and customizing figures infinitely easier. Coincidentally the same goes for ball-jointed waists/torsos compared to the swivel/hinge type. I hate pineless joints sooo much. There is a one more way that has to is doing pineless joint. Inside the molded pineless joints, inside that little circle there are there are ridges and on the molded pins too. They started using them with the newer g.i. Joe figures, don’t know what was the first figure, but for example Lady Jaye. If you warmup the joint and cut one side of the joint and remove an arm or a leg completely you will see what I’m talking about. I do this to all of my newer hasbro figures because it makes the joints move more smoothly. I noticed that Jada Toys is using the same technique. This isn't completely relevant here, but I figured this would be a good place as any to comment this. The Has Bros are so set in their mindset that Hasbro can not do wrong, so if a joint isn't working, they blame the joint itself instead of Hasbro. When double ball pegs don't work, they say the joint doesn't work - it's not Hasbro's fault. Then you have Anthony, he straight up says Hasbro does joints *wrong* , and that's why they don't work. The HasBros get so pissed at this that their only way to cope is by saying "Well he's just a hater, he doesn't like anything." Well that's not true, Anthony likes good stuff, Hasbro just chooses not to make good stuff. It's not Anthony's they design things wrong lol

I think the main issue also with hasbro/marvel legends defenders is that it really does feel like they quite literally only buy marvel legends/hasbro products and next to nothing else. It’s the reason why I feel that they can look at things like the retro card/renew your vows spidey mold or the new black widow mold and say “omg, best figure ever guys!!! Hasbro really knocked it of the park!” When compared to what other companies are doing, those molds are pretty mediocre overall. However, for someone who only buys Hasbro products, those molds probably do feel like step up if you have nothing better to compare them to.

@justicemagnum5242 Yeah, I agree. That tends to be the case with a lot of ML collectors, that's all they buy. All they compare Hasbro to is ToyBiz, which just isn't fair to ToyBiz.

I don't even think it's that for many of the reviewers. Most of the big reviewers do collect other lines, but I think the nostalgia factor of both Marvel characters AND the Marvel Legends line tends to curb their bias. They have too much attachment there. I notice that the DC Multiverse line gets a lot of hate and generally overlooked by the same guys, even though the quality is rather relative between the lines, with McFarlane giving slightly more value for dollar. That says to me what I've always known, DC is not as popular and normie centric as Marvel. Let's be real, most of us grew up when Marvel was cooking in animation and comics, collecting everything Toybiz was putting out in the 90s. ML is the spiritual succesor to that, so it scratches that itch that no other line does with variety that Toybiz used to give us as kids. Basically, these guys are so deep in it that they don't care to look at the line from an objective standpoint. Objectively, ML is the laziest and lowest quality domestic 1/12 line out there and it's blatant at this point. There's no other reason to not see it unless you are being biased towards it.

@@ReeceHoward06 Very true, something I wonder is perhaps there’s also a subconscious fear within Marvel Legends collectors that if they give the line too much flak or stop buying every release, then Marvel Legends will die again. I still remember the days of Legends fans begging for the line to come back and also hating on Marvel Universe back when that line was going strong (at least some of them did anyway), followed by jumping for joy once Legends actually returned.

As a former but current ML collector, ik hasbro is lazy and puts out trash and outdated tech, but it's affordable compared to imports that feel very fragile and crumbles in your hands. I wouldn't want to spend $60+ on something that is very small and feels like it will break right away. Also collecting is just a hobby not a lifestyle I feel the need to spend $100 for 1 figure that lacks paint and detail, (ex: mafex). The only other line I feel is worth the money is Mezco. Lots of details, paint and accessories, even though it's very pricey. What would be a good figure company to replace hasbro ML?

Is anyone else seeing dropped frames/odd jumps in sequencing once we get to the pinned vs. pinless discussion section? I thought it was my TV at first but I'm seeing it on my PC now too, so it must be a camera flub. Looking forward to the release of Rival Clans and hoodie ninja still. He ran circles around McFarlane's MK11 Scorpion as a torso and head, and I'm eager to get a fully realized product in-hand when the day comes. Would you consider putting out a muscular dude-in-briefs body for potential customizing fodder? Thinking about that one guy who wanted to use Ka-Zar and turn him into Simon Belmont, but I'd want a better base body...

A lot of articulation just comes down to the balance of function and aesthetics. You try to keep those in harmony as best as possible while also acknowledging it can change from character to character. Professor X doesn't need the same range of motion as Deadpool. With Hasbro, I think they don't do a great job of this. Pins are apparently too ugly to utilize, but miscolored knees and elbows are okay? Characters with hollow heads and broken necks are better than those without? And you didn't touch on the crap that is the drop-down hip. I personally like ball joints and feel they should be used as much as possible. Hinges should be kept mostly to shoulders, wrists, and ankles. That's just me though. It sounds like you have plans to get back to doing your own figures, any desire to do more custom parts? That animated Beast head you've done in the past is pretty damn good.

Thank you Anthony for making this video. I completely agree. I respect both you and Shartimus a lot, but i think this explanation video are make sense. If you use ball hinge/disk on the neck, the only benefit you get is up and down, not to mention some of the comic characters have long hair which is even more impossible to look up, so what's the point? I hope some companies watching this articulation explanation video. ESPECIALLY Hasbro, 'cause they're seems don't know how to make a proper functioning action figures. So thank you Anthony. Sorry for bad english, i'm from Asia, Keep up the good work.

Seeing you possibly going with some Ronin/Samurai aesthetics, I would buy so many of your figures if they allow me to kitbash a Shura Wolf from Sekiro. Honestly I really hope you lean into more Ronin looking figures, most companies always make Samurai or Ninja but really never nail the Ronin or Vagabond look.

All very valid points... I however like gummy figures they are a joy to put in a pose. The 1st wave of classified joes I got I cut off the teeth so that they are all buttery. I can no longer do that due to the pinless, ugly, stiff af joints. I can no longer customize any figures either cause of the same reason. Entire limbs have to be changed out instead of a section and mixing and matching upper and lower joints. Or having only the ability to cross breed a pinless with a pinned and ruining one of the limbs forever. Perfect example of don't fix it if it isn't broken. The real reason they did it is cause hasbro are cheap and it costs less... Less engineering and less materials. They turned 12 parts into 4 and numbers always win. I also assume they don't use balls for everything is cause the hasbro factory struggle with tension fitting. A ball figure is a work of art where a hinged figure is just slopped together without falling apart. If Hasbro made balls I bet it'd be a QC nightmare lol.

Anthony, I have a small suggestion - can you release a NINJA WEAPONS PACK? 🥷 🥷 🥷 katanas/ninjatos, sheaths optional pegs, shurikens, kunais, kusarigamas, a mini compound bow.. this can be a simple intro/fund raiser to launch Rival Collectibles. hope you’ll consider, we all have storm shadows, deadpools, tmnts in our collection. with weapon handles that can be gripped tightly.. metallic paint that’s not easily rubbed off, sturdy and not gummy weapons - it’ll be really nice to have.
