Olympic lifter here. The "clean deadlift" is a specific movement to reinforce the clean pull. We don't even call it a deadlift haha. It's like comparing a front squat to a back squat.

Okay so you admit to be lacking the knowledge about wrestling but to answer a few questions: Any wrestler below 200 pounds and who has been wrestling for atleast 1 year at the high school level is expected to be able to walk on their hands, evey college and any legit highschool program does handwalking across the gym as part of the warmup before practice. Running is a massive part of the sport as well, id say most highschool wrestlers would run atleast 2 miles each practice for warmup, not including conditioning and in addition to this there is massive ammounts of running for weight cutting. That is another thing that i think should be mentioned is that wrestlers do wild things while being malnourished and alot of the time after running many miles before the contest just to make weight. You would not be able to make a d3 college wrestling team let alone the olympics if you are unable to run long distances or walk on your hands, unless you are in the 285 pound weightclass. I recommend getting into a college wrestling practice one day and youll understand how intense the training is, and thats not even including the intense strength training. I joined Cross country in the middle of my years of wrestling and was able to run a 6 minute mile in my first week because of the gpp wrestling gave me, then the same thing applied to lifting weights where my first time deadlifting I pulled 440 pounds conventional just from my wrestling training.

I wrestled for a good while and this is on the conservative end of how wrestlers practice. I agree with you on everything, and wrestler flexibility is very forgotten by people outside of the sport. Everyone had to be able to do all the different things you see contortionists brag about online even though I wrestled with a group of 30 people who could all do the same things. I've never seen anything near the intensity of a college wrestling practice, and it would be cool to see Mitch join a college wrestling practice.

Climbing is by far the best choice for the metrics you are using. Climbers are very strong in their whole body. Nothing compared to strength sports but compared to their body weight they are far above average. They are generally highly mobile, they are generally good at coordination with both hands and feet considering the modern setting. They have solid aerobic capasity because of the large lead routes they have to climb. They have to be dynamic and static with strength all the time. They are extremely adaptable because every boulder and lead comp is a different set. They are good under pressure including the risk of injury because they take boulder falls from 10ft regularly and have to trust their belayer to not drop them on a 45ft fall. For the mens athletes they are not small people(not huge either but pretty average weight and height for a top athlete) and they are not uncomfortable with pain. Alot of climbing is fighting the pain of the holds, the pain of pump, and the pain of pushing as far beyond your conceived limit every single comp. The fact that you didnt include climbing at all on the list is very uninformed, I get its new to the arena but objectively it has some of the hardest, most variable, and most rounded athletes in all of sport.

I would say wresting has to be number 2. All great wrestlers are good gymnasts (even as a judoka gymnastics is part of my training). Secondly, since you were talking about the "balls" component, you cant beat someone who is desensitised to being dropped on their head. Normal wrestling training consists of weightlifting, Intervals and gymnastics, and a lot of mat time. They are second in strength only to the weighlifters and throwers. I recommend you guys watch some wrestling training compilations

As a swimmer, I always found water polo extremely fun. A lot of the skills you gain from swimming (treading water /kicking drills), the crazy endurance, even just knowing how to move your body through water… it all makes those aspects of water polo much much easier. There is still obviously the hand eye coordination, teamwork/strategy, and physicality that doesn’t directly translate from traditional swimming, but you’d be surprised how much a solid swimming background almost trivializes those other aspects of water polo.

What you said about there being less distinction between the shorter and longer distance swimmers than there is in track is really a major flaw in swim coaches. A lot of coaches refuse to let swimmers specialize until at least the collegiate level. Even the best sprinters of all time grew up doing tons of counterproductive distance training well into their high school years and I feel like if they could specialize younger we’d have some unbelievable sprinters.

Essentially..you got to a lot of sh** together and you know exactely how tough that is and how much the other guy(or girl) is accomplishing...so usually they are super supportive of each other..and in a nutshell..that should be in every sport..you wanna win yeah..but you gotta respect the blood and sweat the other ppl pull into it too

Good analysis, Mitchell. I wouldn’t have thought to include water polo. Decathletes are obviously an excellent choice, but they are somewhat lacking in aerobic endurance. They have 9 anaerobic events, and their only aerobic event is only the 1500m, and most of them hate doing it. For the women’s heptathlon, the only aerobic event is only 800m. Wrestlers and gymnasts are excellent choices, but again lacking in aerobic endurance, especially the gymnasts. Two sports that have strength, speed, agility, plus better aerobic endurance are boxing and basketball. Retired exercise physiology professor here. 🙂

I have been a lot around decathletes and trust me they have great aerobic endurance, they do a lot of long runs in the off season, you need to have good aerobic capacitiy for the decathlon because you are competing for 2 days (all day) and you need to recover fast for the next event, they have 3 jumping competitions just for those you need to do multiple sprints and jumps and then recover for the next event, also the 400m sprint is brutal you need good aerocbic capacity mostly to recover from it and then do other 5 events.

There is a points system to rank the difficulty of different achievements in track and field. I am not sure how it works exactly because I cannot find what equation it is based off of, but it is used by the people who choose what odds for athletes to win. Based on it though, the most impressive achievement by far was Kelvin Kiptum's marathon world record. The previous wr was already the most impressive, but Kiptum shattered it by 34 seconds. Unfortunately he passed away early this year, but he set multiple records in the span of one year and probably would have broken 2 hrs if he had one more race. If he had lived to have a full career, I think he would have gone down in history as one of the greatest athletes to ever live, if he does not deserve that distinction already.

I think sports with the largest talent base generally have the best athletes, because they are the most competitive. But athleticism is a tricky thing to defines, like the athleticism needed for Basketball is quite different than what is needed for wrestling so it would be hard to say of LeBron or Mijan Lopez is the better athlete. As someone who plays Judo though, I'd say that maybe has some of the best athletes only because wrestling gets somewhat diluted by having two different styles in the Olympics - there are just way more Judo players world wide than Greco or Freestyle wrestlers, so Judo had a larger talent pool.

Played Rugby, Water Polo, and Decathlon. Rugby is 1000% the most athletic and hardest. None of the other sports are as physical and require an all-round skillset. Swimming is a main recovery activity for Rugby. I would arrange them. 1. Rugby 2. Decathlon 3. Water Polo 4. Gymnastics

Rules of race walking says that you must have one foot in contact with the ground at all times, as visible to the human eye. So basically you are allowed to "run" if you dont get caught by judges.

I'd put archery higher than golf, archers are stronger than they look and plenty of strength endurance and you have to be very body aware for archery so picking up another skill is easy

Decathlon Decathletes of course If you look back on the 70s abc seasonal series The Superstars asked this question with competitors from all sports. Golfers didn’t do to back up your assumptions.

Wrestlers and gymnasts. Best well rounded athletes. Yes wrestlers can throw...and do handstands. We do handstands in practice pretty regularly. Having water polo above wrestlers hurts my soul brother.

Wrestling. No question. A decathlete can "do things" but when it comes to individual athletic attributes, wrestlers are the most well-rounded.

It's all going to depend on what you're looking for out of your competition. I've been around All-American decathletes and seen some very good D1 wrestlers train and in an all-around competition, I'd pick the decathletes. They tend to be taller, faster, and are naturally very coordinated. Wrestlers tend to be explosive in short bursts and have good muscular endurance, but may not have the most "naturally athletic" build.
