Dan, I did work in Maui a few years ago. It can get very cold and wet at higher elevations in the rain “cloud” forest. If you plan to go up to these elevations be prepared for wind, cold, and rain! Aside from that, Maui is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Enjoy!!

I got the Gregory Stout 75L backpack. I love it. Right now I'm not too interested into going ultralight. I used to have a fairly heavy Woods backpack and my base weight was probably around 60 pounds 😮 I replaced all my gear and now my base weight is typically around 19 pounds so to me that's ultralight compared to what I used to carry. 😅

Personally, I got for a traditional. The benefits gained by increased support, durability, build quality, organization makes a huge difference. Though I want my pack light, I've realized that I no longer need it to be as light as possible as I perfectly okay going 20km+ a day with a 35lb pack very little difficulty and that's the most I'll ever have to do. I actually think dropping my weight down 15 lb and losing that durability and comfort would be a detriment and take away from the experience. One note is I only ever do 1-4 day trips all Rocky Mountains, no thru hikes.

I want that backpack... so I can finish the AT with my father next year, on the 25th anniversary of his attempted thru hike. Great video Dan!

Hi Dan. I can’t thank you enough for this video. I have been looking at ultralight backpacks to drop a couple of pounds to carry around. My Kelty Coyote is 4 lbs. but is extremely comfortable and has lots of pockets. I look at the ultralight packs and it seems they are just sacks with some straps. Anyway, you just saved me $350 - $400 for a pack I probably wouldn’t like. Thanks!

Hey finally some love for the gregory optic. As hybrid backpacks come (good term) this one is especially good, because unlike the Osprey packs in that same weightclass for instance this backpack has a true hipbelt that goes all they way around your waist and doesn't just disappear into the sides of the pack, just like on traditional packs. This makes the pack much more comfortable ones you get to those higher weights, like at the beginning of a trip. My favourite lightweight pack atm.
@aurtisanminer28273 жыл бұрын
That pack looks so much like my osprey exos 58, which is a super comfy pack.

I did most of my hiking in tropical conditions. If I can suggest a couple of pointers ....hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and add salt. Look out for blisters which tend to come easier in hot and humid conditons Cheers One Step Mick

I want that backpack! As a field biologist I do a ton of bushwhacking and hiking daily, having a bag that is sturdy and can withstand that is critical, not to mention caring all of my gear can get uncomfortable using a day pack so I think that traditional style bag would be great! Ironically when I hike for fun I go as light as possible so I have a separate bag. However my light bag is too frail to bushwhack with.

Hiked all over Maui a couple years ago....it’s definitely different. Hot and muggy in the valleys....cool breeze once you go up just a few hundred feet in elevation. Sun protection is a MUST!!! Sun is directly over head in Maui in early June and with a cool breeze off the ocean it’s deceptive and you don’t even realize that your cooking....first and only sunburn of my life.

Hi Dan! Coming to Oregon to ski on Mt Hood? The Timberline Trail is not yet ready for dirt hikers. I was checking road access there on Saturday. I'll be on the mountain next weekend checking road and trails again if you want more information. Fourth of July weekend should be pretty clear with only a few snow patches on the trail and probably a few remaining downed trees to clear. The only road open is to Timberline Lodge and there's no snow until you reach the lodge, everything else is buried under feet of snow. If you come now, plan for a much longer hike with significant route-finding above 5000' elevation. Most of the trail is NOT marked, especially under snow. You can hike to Ramona Falls and some of the low trails around the Sandy River Valley, but that's about it for a few more weeks.

I have that Deuter backpack and it’s a piece of junk. It pretty much does everything you say it doesn’t. The shoulder straps dig into your shoulders regardless of how you load or adjust it. It’s heavy. The hip belt pockets are useless. You have to be double jointed or be able to pop your arms out of their sockets to be able to reach the water bottle pockets without taking the pack off. I’ll increase your chances of winning it by me not entering. I mean, who needs two boat anchors? I sure don’t.

I'm still looking for ultralight backpack for photography/camping. I have Shimoda x50 but it's heavy. I'm tore between Osprey Exos 38 or 48. I want to carry my sony A7III with 16-35GM and Sigma 100-400 (will use peak design cube small insert and shimoda toploader), tripod. For camping gear Big Agnes 3 person UL, quilt. Not sure if 38 will be enough. Camping with wife that already has Osprey 38 Eja (maybe also better to get here 48- she doesn't have photo gear). Would be good to hear your take on that Dan.

i have that backpack. its pretty light for its capacity. no break in required super comfortable hipstraps and shoulder straps. tropic camping: it will be wet. rain jacket with large hood brim. rain pants. or just commit to large poncho. it rains and stops pretty fast. bug jacket. bug pants. head net , the one from Outdoor research with the ring that keeps it away from your face/neck (no licking the net on accident, no bites when it rests on your skin, and you can fit your hand in it and SNACK! deet is the only bug spray that works longer than 5 seconds if you want to use a repellent. stay covered long sleeves/pants cuz BUGS. sitting on ground or bare feet = biting ants. wear shoes if not in the water, but water shoes are helpful (tevas/chaco) sleeping: silk liner silk pj's, and silk liner socks if wool is too hot, they are thin no padding though.
