The Best Bait for Murray Cod fishing. Better than cheese?

A quick video of the main bait that I use when targeting Murray Cod in the Murray river. Is this the best bait when it comes to convenience, cost, fish catching ability? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

The cocktail bait does not surprise me that much because a lot of the old timers used to put it in there doe bait but the sinker style and your hook rig is a fantastic idea. The style of sinker your using makes the rig almost snag proof, I can see how the hook point would bounce over snags with the sinker acting as a weed guard. Great idea you have taught me a trick thank you.

😎🤗👍, I’m originally from the UK and my mate’s suggested a ‘Cod trip. I was just about to search for a ‘does hotdog catch cod?’ Video 😛👏👏👏. I have caught common carp in the Uk on hotdog though. (If you catch a carp, it’s ‘one less breeder in the pond’ as far as I’m concerned 😎👍).

Been using them for years my pop showed me this method about 20yrs ago.. the theory behind it is the same as cheese it attracts bait balls of shrimp feeding on it (hence the scrape marks in the bait when you bring it in) and the cod come threw and grab your bait while hitting the shrimp... Great method tho!!!

As any regular cod fisher knows " cod will eat anything" it depends on their mood as to what they eat on any given day. I thought your choice of fishing spots was interesting. 2 factors when fishing for cod, structure and depth in proportion to water temp. Hang in there cheers.

will deinately try the cocktail franks i was fishing the edwards at mathoura last year couldnt get a bite on the cheese or worms switched to bacon and caught one after another tried bacon again 2 weeks later couldnt get a bite hahah

I have hear of people using bacon but never tried it. Yeah it pays to have a few different bait options

What are those sinkers called mate ?. Or do you drill out the bottom ?.

I'm not too sure as I make them as my old man has a sinker mould. They pyramid in shape but more rectangle at the bottom and not square like classic pyramid sinkers are. They are great for the river as they hold the bottom well and don't roll around and as they are pointer at the top they retrieve by getting up of the bottom quickly away from snags

Have u try fishing in lakes weir they stock cod useing hotdogs ? Might give caincurren a go theirs big cod in that lake and try hot dogs

Had a conversation with an old fisho a few years back and reckon he said that he used chicken salt chips to catch cod. The conversation moved on and I never got the chance to go back and check that I heard him correctly. Even if they're frozen I reckon, they would fall off the hook pretty quickly. Have you heard of anything like that being used?

No never heard of chicken salt chips. I agree the chips would probably come off to easy. Raw Chicken is pretty popular so maybe some added chicken salt might give off more scent in the water

Hey Brenton, how do you actually select a spot to fish? It's interesting how you cast into the middle of the river rather than drop into snags

Much of this section of river is fairly shallow. Many of the snags are only in 1-2m of water. When selecting a snag I usually look for one that has a sharp drop off to 4-5m just downstream. I usually then cast into the deeper water and let the current take the bait. This seems to work as I find the cod move into the deeper water once the sun comes up. Also the drop offs seem to create undercurrents where cod hold up waiting for bait to wash of the shallow faster running water. That’s my theory not sure how true it is. The other reason for casting into the middle is a habit from years of fishing from the bank

That is the theory but may not always be the case .. I have had cod smash the cheese as soon as it hits the bottom.. Way before any shrimp has a chance .. Whilst the theory maybe correct in the scheme of things ..I feel the cod love the cheese as well ...Maybe mistaken it for Bardi Grubs which are by far there favourite food source.. You can even get molds to shape your cheese into a Grub shape.. And I have had that work when there have been no shrimp activitie present.. Just my experience ..
