Wouldn't people be raiding gardens? Maybe sprouting and microgreens inside the house would work?
@joshuahein9928

But keep in mind only a few people will be able to use seeds (especially keeping mind those who have two brown thumbs), but almost anyone and everyone can use the produce from the seeds after you grow them, so seeds are vital but are not the best barter items in themselves. The whole idea behind barter items is they are immediately usable to the largest number of people possible, and very portable IE tradable. For example MREs will be 1,000 time more valuable as barter items then seeds, or even the food grown in your garden. Also as far as raiding goes. If you live near that many people of that moral character you better move ASAP because no mater what you do they will just take your supplies and leave you for dead or worse. You need ether trust worthy community or an absent community. God can and will protect us at some point but we still have the initial burden of protecting ourselves. And i for one have no intention of putting myself and family in a situation where my garden attracts raiders. Because then I will be forced to choose between giving up my families food source or standing guard and being prepared to use what ever force needed to protect my property. A choice I would rather avoid.

I'd like to agree with you but there are a couple of other things to keep in mind: 1. Seeds go bad after a while. You can keep them in a fridge for several years but eventually, they go bad. Maybe you have a garden and you're recovering seeds. This is great and you have a renewable source but what if you have to move? Then there's the question of a bad season. If you have a limited crop of seeds, do you barter them with someone else or hang on to them knowing you need the chance to feed your own family next year. 2. As @Joshua Hein pointed out, there are people who can't grow anything. I personally struggle to keep a couple of Basel Plants alive in my apartment window, though I did okay when I was a kid with our 2 acre family farm 3. Seeds are not as readily renewable. Obviously, we're not talking about making alcohol here, that's illegal but if it weren't illegal, you could make a batch every few days 4. A lot of short sighted people wouldn't think of seeds. Maybe they're the roaming band of assault peppers. Having some alcohol on hand (if it were legal) might be the difference between them cleaning you out and them taking some alcohol to leave you alone. I've often thought, people with a nice wine and chocolate collection will do well for a while at least. Everyone wants the comforts of life and if you have them, people will trade a lot to get them.

Years ago my husband was in South America with a group of men in a medical missions trip. I suggested he pack sewing needles to give out, and it turned out they were a very much desired and popular item there,, thread would have made it even better ( and have you noticed the price of thread now ?). Needles, thread, and a yard of good fabric could be a trade item too, more specific, but even tough-it-out homesteaders need things patched up and mended.

Just so people are not confused you cannot run a diesel on distilled alcohol. The cutaneous is too low and auto ignition is temp is far too high. What he did was tap the pine tree and distill light fuel off of it and use the fatty oil left in the bottom. A gasoline engine will run on distilled alcohol but diesel needs a high cetane low auto ignition temp...I run my diesel on used engine oil, vegetable oil or any kind of fatty oil like hemp, algae , peanut oil ect... The distilled alcohol will also run chainsaws with a jet change and the correct oil to mix with it. Good video

I was just watching a documentary on a Tudor monastery and they talked about how important distilling was. One of the best lines was the mentor was teaching a mentee how to make brandy, and said ah the first bit that comes out will kill you, it’s highly toxic, so don’t drink that. The mentee asked “how do you know when it’s safe to drink then?” And the old man replied: “you don’t, you just guess.” I lol’d so freaking hard.

Thank you! As always, your shared input is greatly appreciated! Hmmm... hadn't thought of it, in that way... From what I understand... the real reason alcohol was attacked so much, was cause oil tycoons like Rockefeller. In the beginning cars where being built to run on alcohol, oil and/or electric. Standard oil and Rockefeller was just so powerful, he crushed the competition. Prohibition and regulations made is so difficult that all car designs, that was not oil, was just to difficult to keep up, so they had to give up. I don't think it was just exclusively cars, either though. The point is, it was oil vs. alcohol vs. electric and as we all know, oil took the crown... At least, that's how I heard it. 😁 ☝🤠✝️😎👍

I have an 8-gallon Alembic copper still, a replica of the one invented by the father of perfumery, Alkindus, in the 9th Century. It can be heated with the traditional wood fire or with propane tanks. It’s intended use is to produce essential oils and hydrosols, as well as other medicines that need to be distilled. You mentioned distilling water; I hadn’t thought of that. Great idea! Thanks for your contribution to getting through the next few years. I’m starting a neighborhood barter exchange in my rural neighborhood. I read an article from a man who survived a two year siege on his city where the military blocked all traffic in or out, and he suggested lighters. They are small, and you can carry a lot of them on you concealed--keeping you off the radar for thieves who might rob you on the way to barter your goods. He said you could get a free meal or two for one lighter. They sell online for about a buck each if you buy 50 at a time. They take very little space to store in your house for when you need them too. Plus as cheap as lighters are, it is next to nothing to buy an extra 50 every month for a few months. Don't forget all the other stuff like guns, grub, and gold, but even smokers don't stock up on lighters. They will chase lighters like a crack addict when the SHTF and they can't get their nicotine fix.

If the Mythbusters are to be believed, modern cars are actually MORE flexible than old ones with regard to fuel. Modern gas at most American gas stations is up to 10% ethanol (alcohol) already, and the cars have a computer monitering the fuel injection process and engine performance, so this is probably actually even more true/relevant today.

You don't necessarily need all the accessories to raise the final alcohol content. You just run the product through the still again. Woodford Reserve (pretty sure) has a three pot still setup. A way to cheat the initial alcohol content is to freeze some of the water out of your mash / 'distillers beer.' This wouldn't be practical 'off-grid,' though, unless you lived up north in the winter.

And oh how I laughed. I live in the area of Scotland, where there is a whiskey distillery in every glen. Literally. Over the mountain from me there are two distilleries and the population in my village is under 100. It would be like selling salt at the Dead Sea...wink. My property, which is very remote, was used to make illegal whiskey in the 1700's because it was so hard for the "regulators" or anyone else to get to and there is a lot of clear, clean fast running water...like everywhere in Northern Scotland. The old building is still here. I picked this property because of its defensive location only to find out this history later. The moonshiners would warn of the regulators coming by building big fires on the mountain top that could be seen before those pesky regulators were a day out. I think they used to hide barrels in the bogs.

Nobody notices my buttons (partly because my shirts have that flap of fabric that covers the buttons), and in a SHTF scenario where silver is traded as money by the average person again, I have money. If safety is an issue, I'll just replace them with cheap buttons again, and I have a pocket full of money. Good money at that. A sterling silver dime (1/10oz) was a working man or soldier's daily pay throughout history. It's only now that they suppress the value that you can get two weeks pay for around $40. I have 8 buttons on each shirt if you count the two spares I sew on the inside of each shirt. Because of the design, I have 10 buttons per pair of pants. That's about a month's pay in one outfit. Providing silver's true value is returned--which it will be if things get that bad. People in Venezuela were able to escape the country with their whole families just by having gold and silver. Stock up while they are on sale. {smile}.

Lawfully we can do make what we want when we want how we want as long as we don't sell, have any bad intentions or harm anyone Everything is trade that's why we are tradesman not persons we are to live free to honor heavenly Father, it is unlawful for any state to issue a license and charge a fee converting a right into a privilege, it's up to us to exercise our rights for the sake of our and our neighbors families, we need stop thinking everything is a sale or buy just my opinion, and great video topic though

When the S really truly does HTF, gold and silver are basically just pretty rocks. You are better off providing for people for Maslows Heirarchy of Needs directly, rather than focusing on alternate means of their paying for those needs. A starving man doesn't want the ability to BUY food; he wants to be fed. A bleeding man doesn't want coinage to pay a doctor; he wants the doctoring NOW. Yknow? Money in any form is just a middle-man translator to stabilize the value of barter (one butchered chicken is worth two dozen eggs is worth a gallon of milk is worth 6 ounces of honey is worth five dollars). All those things could be negotiated for directly WITHOUT using the money; it's just easier in a functional society to trade "full faith and credit". When the grid goes down, credit goes with it. You'll be forced to deal directly with providers and consumers on a case by case basis.

@@fl3082 I agree. I wish people would stop pushing silver and gold. Even if you do invest, how do you know you have a genuine coin/bar that isn't another heavy metal (lead, tungsten, etc.) that's plated and weighs the same. It would be easy to get duped in SHTF and there's no way to know. It's only valuable AFTER SHTF, if you survive, when things start to calm down and people return to civilization. Wouldn't it be better to have tangible preps and services? If you really want silver/gold the best time to acquire it would be during SHTF when the value/price is really low and people will trade for small preps. Right?

You can't buy one still and then use it for different uses, e.g. make essential oils and then distilled water.

Okay, I've been waiting for you to mention something but I'm 12 minutes in and you still haven't said it. I think you need to talk about the heads and the tails at least enough to let people know that what they distill isn't all safe for consumption and tinctures. Right now you can get equipment to help you differentiate, while you're learning how to do it without the equipment. But in the long run you need to start learning how to differentiate your heads and tails.

The purpose of this video is not to teach you or anyone how to distill anything. First off, it's illegal per federal law for me to do so and show anything like that. If its legal where you live, then it's up to you to learn about the forshots, heads, hearts and tails. The purpose of my video is to talk about what I believe is the number one bartering tool to have for a collapse. There are plenty of other youtube channels that talk about the details and safety of distilling. Please follow all local and federal laws in this matter.

Zach your information is somewhat incorrect. HR 1337 passed in 1978 sets a limit for permitless production for personal use. You may produce up to 200 gallons in a calendar year, but not past 100 gallons at a time per person over 21. Under 25 CFR 25.206 tasting contests are exempt from requiring a producers permit. This applies to beers and wines. Arkansas state law reflects Federal Law though it limits it to 100 per person. As per the AFT regulations, it's up to what they define as "distilled spirits" as. I mean these are the same idiots who tried to redefine what a machine gun is without notifying Congress over a trigger specifically designed by a lawyer to not met the definition.

Zack while I agree that a still is a good investment for barter later I wonder about the items needed to make the alcohol? I know that you can make brandy and other wines and such but "alcohol" such as "shine" requires certain items for the fermentation process. I would also look into making fuel that runs in a car....think I will research that some more.....might be worth looking into.
