Prussian blue makes beautiful grays when mixed with a touch of orange.

Nice summary guys! I only used Ultramarine blue for the longest time, because everyone kept telling how strong Phthalo blue is. BUT, that advice is only as good as your skill level is low. After you get the hang of it, its like learning how to pilot a jet airplane. For mixing grayed out blues, I use a mixture of phthalo green yellow shade + dioxazine purple, and that makes a really deep blue that its perfect for much of natural light. Bonus: its got a really good coverage too, much better then ultramarine blue, because of the deep staining color mixture. Only those really blue skys or other parts need a touch of UB or PhB. Congrats again!

Absolutely, once you really get to know one blue- when you try out another it is SO much easier to spot the difference in not only their chroma -but how they mix with other colours. Phthalo is wonderful for its staining quality but if you really need a blue that greys out quick cobalt is great too! So many options- which is part of the problem. Better to start like you did- with a reduced colour palette and then slowly start to add different pigments. Thank you for your feedback and insight! Always appreciated :)

You charm really came though on this video. Love it. Would you then have both Ultramarine and Cobalt on a limited palette? Thank you.

Thank you so much! I used Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, and Cerulean Blue over the years. It is time for me to try the Pthalo Blue and the Prussian Blue intrigues me a bit.

What about Phthalo Blue Red Shade and Green Shade?
@ourstudioseries74908 ай бұрын
Hey Jenny - GREAT question. We did not address this in the video so thank you for bringing this up. There is such a small difference between them! Most people would not notice if someone snuck into their paint box and switched one for the other. You would really only see the big difference seeing them side by side. If anything- Green Shade is slightly more useful. Ultramarine blue covers your purplish blues so you are really using your phthalo blue for the greenish shades. Hope this helps! :)

What about indigo blue
@lucianocortopassi30982 жыл бұрын
Very good video. Ultramarine blue is the best and most versatile, in my opinion, it can be used in landscapes, still lifes and portraits, it's my favorite. Sometimes I use phtalo blue, I find it a very pigmented color that always dominates the others, I use it with caution Thanks guys Congratulations

Thank you very much! Phthalo blue really is the energizer bunny of blues. Its tinting power is so strong. Only need a tiny pinch to tint a colour with Phthalo

i also use a heavy ultramarin user, but for really bright skies it is a pain and i add a phtalo. the mixture of these two blues are lovely. never tried out the cobalt. to light for me.

Personally I like Cerulean Blue in the lower horizon of my skies transitioning going upwards into French Ultramarine.

My first oil set: at first I wanted pigments of semi precious gemstone and when I discovered how much it would cost even to get started I gave up. Now, I am looking at these "inkish pigmants". I figure I can learn more and do more like this. I am going to do my gresailles with crayola premier tempra

Can you imagine how exciting it would have been to get your hands on ultramarine back in the day! Made from Lapis Lazuli. Incredibly expensive. We are so lucky to have access to the pigments we have today! Hope you are enjoying your oils. Happy Painting :)

I don’t understand which ones are the warm blues and the cold blues 😞
@ourstudioseries74903 жыл бұрын
You’re not alone! I always viewed blues on the “red” side of the spectrum (eg ultramarine) as warm and those on the “green” side as cool, but as Aisling pointed out, phthalo blue is about the same distance from yellow, as ultra is from red. So it’s a bit arbitrary. Go with what works for you.

I bought Manganese blue recently. I like it. It has kind of metallic hint.

And it is super sustainable apparently. So yay for the environment! It is a lovely cool transparent blue. I have tried it once but will see if I can track down a tube to try again!

TLDR: student grade phthalo blue for the win. Full comment: Considering that turquoise is "the end of "blue" on the spectrum, phthalo blue would be much more 'in the middle' then cobalt. Since my last comment 3 years ago on this video, i've come to use a student grade phthalo blue (WN) as my main blue and it is such a workhorse, works perfect really, no bad qualities besides still being strong tinting even in student grade. And PB15 can still give a super saturated purple blue if quin magenta/red is mixed with it. Also, the fact that PB15 tends more green, which is much more common than purple, makes phthalo blue more useful as a mixer then ultramarine. On the last note, a student grade phthalo blue would save money and not compromise the painting quality in any way, since its it is as much lightfast and durable as artists ones and also because pb15 would only be used in small quantities overall. TLDR: student grade phthalo blue for the win

Phthalo blue can never replace Prussian Blue. Like many things in this modern world, it lacks the wonderful subtleties and layers of Prussian Blue.
@ourstudioseries74908 ай бұрын
Prussian blue is so moody and easy to handle and doesn't stain everything in the studio! It is a fabulous pigment -but I find that electric vibrancy of phthalo is irreplaceable :)

Hm. Well - now, you can get real Manganese Blue again; Cerulean, Kings Blue, and various others if you search them out - I've long searched for a real sky-blue, but - the sky varies so much; could there even be one? Probably not. There are variations between makers' blues, too - sometimes, Cerulean/Coeruleum is impossibly weak - from other makers, it's vibrant. Sad to say, you've just to try all of them until you find the variation that works for you. (Try Rembrandt Cerulean - then Daler-Rowney's Coeruleum - big variation.)

I like yoir vids. But i think you can maybe change the format a bit. For example, he explains fully one colour, and then she explains the next one,. Or maybe she does a full show on blues, and then he does a full one on greens. But always alternating to make sentences can sometimes be distractive. I hope you don't mind my commemt since it is only meant as constructive. Your channel is very good regardless. Thanks guys.
