In March I read When Angels Fear To Tread by E.M. Forster and though the book overall was a solid good 3/5 star book the ending was a wild ride but also sad. I just really wasn't expecting so much action considering the pacing of the majority of the book and that my copy is only 180 pages. I also have to mention Kate Morton's books- specifically The House At Riverton and The Forgotten Garden. I know you weren't as much of a fan of The Forgotten Garden but I enjoyed it more than the former. I read them pretty soon after the other. (Well, "pretty soon" given that I was in high school and didn't like to read things on my own while reading things for English class.) I asked for The House At Riverton for Christmas one year and read it over Christmas break and into January. I was so amazed by it and loved it so much that it became my favorite book! I was blown away! Then I read The Forgotten Garden during the summer and then _that_ became my favorite book! They're tied as number two in my ranking of favorite books, now, but I think I'll always remember the pieces coming together and overall reading about the characters' lives. I think the only other books I can think of that had surprising/crazy endings to me are some within series, and particularly books that are more fantasy or sci-fi based and therefore have more action than these other general fiction examples. I read the Shadow & Bone Trilogy earlier this year and those are definitely ones I could mention. And I'll also mention Gemina, Book 2 in the Illuminae Files.

The best ending that made me "Well done, you" as you asked for is one called Genesis by Bernard Becket (NOT the bible book). It starts as kind of a dystopia... It is short and I read it in 2015. Gotta reread it sometime cause I still think about that ending.

@@annegc85 I think I found it through a site where people asked for titles of books they only vaguely remembered, and that was a “frequent flyer” in the group! I never hear about it otherwise. House Of Stairs was an entertaining one that I also found through that group! The Warren by Brian Evenson reminds me a little of Genesis, as does Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood... not quite such twist books, but they both give me that vibe of a main character proving knowledge and following their struggle! Some Of Your Blood by Theodore Sturgeon also gives me a hint of the vibe, especially if you are a little dense like me and didn’t pick up on the whole “deal” with the main character until the end. 😸😸

@@LauraLittlePony I heard it from a booktuber (I'm brazilian andq so is she) and the book drew me in because of the scholar aspect, since I was a researcher in the university too, so I knew the drill :) presenting a thesis and such... Never Let Me Go is one of my favorite books of all time. The twist is actually stated about 1/3 into the book, which I think is genius! It’s very shocking, but it’s almost like the characters, even though they have been given some info about it, don’t fully believe it. You know, but it’s too awful for you to really believe, either... even as time goes on in the book and you know for sure, yes, this is what’s going on, it’s only toward the end that it really hits you full force. It’s like knowing hard truths of being adult as a child, vs facing those hard truths and living through them. I find it really powerful and beautiful. I highly recommend you reread, just because I think you would love the experience! I’ve read it many times. 😺 I know you hated it, but I see why so many people are shouting out the ending of Behind Her Eyes. 😉 For my money, I have to mention The Grapes Of Wrath. Both wow and yikes. I remember Station Eleven all coming together in a particularly satisfying and affecting way, too!
