Second hand Panasonic GX80 (£200 or so) plus a good prime lens - there's a whole bunch of choices for under £400. Good stabilisation, quiet electromagnetic mechanical shutter, tilting rear screen with touch focus, RAW files are surprisingly good even in poor light. M4/3 also gives deeper depth of field per f-stop than APS-C or full frame, so if you're depth focussing, you can do it at lower f-stops than other formats and significantly close the gap on the image quality difference that bigger sensors provide.

True. Such an inexpensive camera but has it all for the streets. Pair it with a tiny 12-32mm, a 20mm f/1.7 and/or a 15mm f/1.7 and you're set for not a lot of money. I recently got one for the second time, realized how much I missed it, even if I also have Fuji and Olympus cameras that I love, there's something special about the GX80.

Can you use the gx80 after dark, with the f1.8 primes? I always wondered if that’s possible, to capture moving subjects in low light with mft systems
@SrCordeiro Жыл бұрын
@@marcorenato1814 Sure, I've my GX80 today with the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 and 15mm f/1.7, it's great and so small and light, you become a ninja in the streets. The GX9 20mp sensor is a bit better even, and with better color. Will it be as clean as full-frame? Of course not, but still very good and nowadays noise reduction software with machine-learning gives the files an extra boost. The GX80 also has excellent IBIS for more static shots.
@disraelidemon Жыл бұрын
@@marcorenato1814 I use mine after dark with f1.7 and 1.8 and I'm happy with the results. You'll maybe get a bit more grain with mft than APS-C, but I'm very happy with the results I get. Bear in mind also that a lot of the Sony & Fuji camera bodies/f1.8 primes aren't stabilised, so the IBIS in the GX80 can let you pull down your ISO and offset some of the difference.

Have had the A7c since April 2021, purchased as a follow-up to my old NEX-5N. Though fewer customizable buttons, it continues most of the advantages of size that mirrorless ILCs that the APS-C cameras did, as long as lens choices are as diminutive as the body. Even so, the kit lens is better than the kit lens for the NEX. The Sony 85mm 1.8 works for an alternate compact prime, as well as the low-cost Sony 1.8 50mm. Works, yields quality images, and all without breaking the bank.

@eddecker4174 Жыл бұрын
The old NEX-5N I started mirrorless ILCs with had a flip-up screen though no viewfinder, so the screen was sole device for composing a shot. Yes it flipped up, and would let you hold it above your head and aim down--but it wouldn't allow a view from the front of the camera, nor did it provide a way to view the screen while aiming the lens in a completely different direction. The A7C does. You CAN flip it up, but only after you unfold it to your left, and THEN flip it up. Slightly more work, but same result as flip-up.

My picks (and I own them) in price order, GRIIIx, X100V, X-Pro3 with an 18mm f2, 35mm f2 or a 50mm f2. Never use burst mode so not worried about that. Everything costs a bit more now, but in the last couple years ago I've bought an Olympus E-M1 mk 1 and several lenses, including a Panasonic 14mm & 20mm, Olympus 9-18mm, 14-150mm and 30mm macro for under $1000 total. 💰👀 I do mostly street photography, and I'm pretty happy with this gear. (Thank you everyone that's buying new gear and making their "outdated" gear available to people like myself who don't need or care if they have the latest bells & whistles.)

A Panasonic GX series with the GH6 sensor, phase detect, and dual IS that works for both Pany and Only lenses. My god, that would be beautiful.
@lorenschwiderski Жыл бұрын
The GX-9 has a good sensor -- maybe a bit of noise at times, but overall nice. I see no need for image stabilization on the street, as the shutter speed is cranked between 1/320s and 1/500s in most cases to prevent motion blur. Sadly, the GX series may have reached its end. 😐. Now a top of the line sensor, as you mentioned -- wow, a great dream, no doubt!

PROUD owner of the Fuji x-t30ii and the Ricoh GR II. The Ricoh shots served me very well for the beginning of my street days but Fuji is my go to every time. I am tempted to get a second body at some point. Love everything about it and on the street, it's so comfortable!

For me, I like the Olympus Pen E-P7 with a 20mm Panasonic 1.7 lens. Small and EZPZ. I tried the Fuji X100V on a rental. It's a cool camera...but I thought the lens was soft wide open. And I shoot wide open because I'm a heathen.

The fact that the a1 gets mentioned in both your wildlife and street camera lists says a lot about its versatility and configurability. Of course, the $6500 price tag might have something to do with that.

To he honest any of the modern mirrorlees models from any big brand will do a good job. They're compact enough and with a compact prime lens it'll be small and light enough. Personally my Fuji XT4 does a great job for street, and I can choose from a 23 or 33 mm depending how I feel. Not as compact as the fixed lens models that were mentioned, but hey, we used to carry around huge DSLRs, so I can't complain

Mostly my carry-everywhere-everyday is Nikon Coolpix A DX. Don't need more pixels 16Mp is enough (it's like Ricoh GR I) Nice, solid, feel its weight but it's small. Dropped on the pavement and not a trace of damage. My Canon and Nikon DSLRs are for more planned shooting. Nikon sits in my pocket on my everyday way to the office. Ooc jpgs are great. Not to mention that in the other pocket sleeps the film loaded Olympus XA

Great review, Thanks. Brand new Black Fuji XT5 and a Fuji WR prime lens f1.4, for night & day Street photography. Less than USD3000. Either the 16mm (24eq) or the new 18mm (27eq) or the new 23mm (35eq) or the new 33mm (50eq), all f1.4 and WR, depending on your style/preferences. For your 3rd category (dream: USD12k), I would choose the new Hasselblad X2D 100C and the XCD 2.5/38 V (30eq)… pure photography.

With each new video you put out, I''m downright shocked you haven't made a video about the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 yet. With active stabilization enabled, it's a focal range that is remarkably similar to an iPhone at 1× and 2× zoom. It's also cheap and very lightweight, so it should prove to be extremely popular with photographers switching from their phones. Can you please give this lens the attention it deserves?

I saw the title and knew exactly what the winner would be for "Money's no object". The Q2 is the first camera I've shot that really feels like a whole experience (connecting with all the best parts while minimizing everything else). But also anyone who watches DPReview TV (and pays attention) knew where Chris was going to end up. (Those reviews were a big part of my decision to get a Q2)
@MichaelOLeary-jg7it Жыл бұрын
Good info Chris and lots of good suggestions from commenters. Overwhelming really. I'm looking to get into some street photography during travels but also need something with versatility for other travel related objectives i.e. architecture, landmarks, vistas, low light. The biggest take away I got for street photo was the need for an unobtrusive setup to be as invisible/unobtrusive as possible. From many of the comments, it appears that it's an either/or decision: Point and shoot style vs ILC; full frame vs APS-C vs M43. I get that the larger the sensor, the better the quality but I don't want the bulk and weight that goes along with full frame and even APS-C systems. It appears that the M43 format might be the best option to achieve my objectives. Any insights will be appreciated.

I bought the Fuji X-E3 on release specifically to be my travel camera. I got tired of hauling around my Canon 5D2 kit around. My core travel kit is the 18-55, 55-200 and Samyang 12mm. I often add the Fuji 16mm f1.4. This kit is still small and covers my needs. I've actually mounted the Fuji 100-400 to my X-E3 with excellent results.

I have several cameras - I’m a collector! I get another one and I can’t part with the other one.. I took a Sony RX100 mk 6 on my around the world trip and it performed very well. F2.8 was quite good for some bokeh, but I like the auto backlighting and fast autofocus. It’s so small you can put it in your pocket and it has a flip up EVF which is VERY necessary. My other camera which takes outstanding photos with great bokeh is my Leica ( bought on eBay second hand for a steal) V-LUX typ 114). The images are amazing. The zoom range is 25-400. To get the quality from this type of zoom lens fixed is incredible.

If not a Leica M because of lack of autofocus (though honestly, zone focus...), and you want autofocus or a choice of lenses (possibly even M and LTM), the SL2. It even uses the same batteries as the Q2.

Please do one for portraits shooting. What's important? AF accuracy. Eye-AF. Choice of frame (4:3/3:2/5:4). Skin colors and texture rendering. Lenses. And of course, lights compatibility, on-camera/off-camera. This is also important.

MY Street Camera wish list : MUST have; Compact. Retro Styled. Clear 'open' VF. Diopter adjustment. Manual Focus option. Interchangeable lenses or 28mm (FF equivalent) if not. 26+MP. FAST AF, (was the only reason I didn't get the XE4- I tried one and was disappointed, Fuji so NEARLY got it right. The iPhone is also slow to 'grab' a shot compared to a dedicated street camera) WANT; approx 26-60MP, IBIS ( a must have for the higher MP cameras), if not, weather resistant, Lens markings for Focal ranges, lens aperture manual choice, Fuji X100../XE4 type retro styling and price and Great film simulations. Large porthole for viewing ( or whatever it's called). Simple controls- I don't want to have to take a Phd to be able to use it. Articulated screen (for ground or hip shooting, not overhead or selfie) DON'T WANT: Lots of dials and buttons. swivelling screen. DON"T NEED: Video So yes Fuji is closest. if only the AF on the smaller cameras was like the Sony. When Fuji started with the X-pro 1 it was called the poor mans Leica and that's what so many people wanted, a Leica they can afford, and was a great step in the right direction. People wanted a Leica not just for the Kudos but for the styling and lens quality and the responsiveness.. The X-pro experience through the VF though is nowhere near as good as a Leica. If they can fix that on the next X-pro then it'd be a prime contender. I found the X-pro 3 restrictive and clumsy in operation by comparison to Leica. I would get a Leica, but sadly Im not made of money.

For me it's the Zfc with Voigtländer 23mm Nokton. No autofocus but a real aperture ring on the lens. As retro as you can get. Really fun combo. And use the lens well and it really has the x-factor (not meaning Fuji, though I like those too)

Forgot to mention Olympus OM1, the Olympus with yellow filter b&w as option does it for me, plus street at night won't need tripod much. And then there's the handheld HDR burst shooting mode to go 60mp or 80mp. This for way under $3000. Used, saw for a little under $2000. For under $1000, how about old models of Sony DSC X100 IV or V.

Would have loved to see the Canon M6 Mark II up there (esp. since you can make it larger or smaller with the removable EVF, great image quality, good looking, silent shutter) or the Lumix S5 (also a good looking camera, silent, L. Form factor and simplicity. My everyday carry in my work rucksack in neoprene cases a GRiii Street Edition and a GRiiiX; awesome. Add a Leica Q (type 116) for short holiday breaks where the extra stops are v useful in low light. Now a new slightly bigger all rounder (street, architecture, landscape) for me when travelling a Leica SL2-S and Sigma 28/70 F2. Covers most requirements; sharp, fast, accurate, flexible and surprisingly good value eBay bargains.
