Yes, I was hoping for a third generation 7D. This 90D still is absolutely awesome. Extremely versatile for both photo and video. I love the option of BOTH cropped and uncropped 1080 and 4K. If I'm doing a lot of video, I enjoy using a cage and a magnifying loupe eyecup for the rear LCD... better than any mirrorless EVF, and yet practically all of the mirrorless functionality in LiveView mode, too. One day, photographers who began on mirrorless are going to want to go back and experience the best that mirrored DSLRs had to offer. They're going to be looking at the 90D, the 5D Mark IV, the 6D Mark II and the 1D Marks II & III, each representing the very best -- and last -- of their respective classes.

2:06 When you use that 400mm f 5.6 on a 90D (or any camera with 1.6 crop factor) the results will look like 640mm f 8.96. That's just how physics work. There is a reason why we don't use smartphone sized sensors with cheap 50mm f 1.8 lenses and get pictures that look like 300mm f 1.8. Hey guys and gals, thanks so much for all the positive feedback and vibes. Just wanted to clear a few things up! Made a mistake, canon has a 1.6x crop factor, turning a 400mm into a 640mm... my bad! To those saying that the aperture gets multiplied yes that’s true, but it’s not as simple with telephotos. Telephoto lenses also use the law of compression. It’s a bit different from smaller focal lengths, calculation works but you will still be able to get desirable depth of field IF YOU ARE AT A HIGH FOCAL RANGE (meaning a f/5.6 won’t look like an f/9 when you shoot at 400mm because it will effectively be at 640mm). Of course you’re going to get more bokeh out of a full frame, but one should consider other factors! Hope this helps!

It doesn't effect the light coming in itll be a f5.6 still with bokeh looking more like an f8 but itll definitely depend highly on how close you are too your subject. If you're going for enviro portraits then itll look like the f8 when getting the trees and possibly lakes in there with the animals, however when filling the frame it should still blow the background out pretty decently
@tomaskoeck4 жыл бұрын
MrLogandm yes agreed! What people forget is that using a 640mm will blow out the backgrounds much more than a 400mm at the same distance based on the laws of compression. People get so hung up that aperture is the soul cause for blown out backgrounds, but like most things, it’s a combo of different factors.

@@EEEBA1 When I was picking out a new DSLR for wildlife photography a couple of months ago, I had the same dilemma. For me, it was between the flagship crop sensor cameras for Canon and Nikon; the 90d and d500. After a lot of research, I found that the 90d had very little going for it compared to the nikon. The d500 shares its autofocus system with the d5, and its crazy quick and snappy. Also, even though the canon has a higher megapixel count, its noise performance is about 1-1.5 stops behind the nikon. You also get the full customization options within the menu that are only found in top of the line nikon cameras. To top it all off, the two cameras are in the same price range. Im not sure which camera models you are specifically looking at, but from everything I have gathered, nikon has done a fantastic job with all of their bodys, and has slightly edged canon out in recent years. With all that being said, you still can’t go wrong either way. All canon and nikon cameras are capable of taking great pictures if you use them correctly! Hope this helps!
@EEEBA13 жыл бұрын
@@andrewn.9072 Yes it does help. Thank you. My only reason I was thinking Canon is because of their lens availability but I'm sure Nikon is about the same in that department?! I used to shoot with Canon years ago (zero equipment left because I gave it all away in 2013). So I'm starting all over again. I'm interested mainly in wild life, action and micro photography. I always wanted a Nikon camera and this is my chance :)
@andrewn.90723 жыл бұрын
@@EEEBA1 I would say that in general Canon and Nikon’s lens assortment are on the same level. Since I almost exclusively shoot wildlife, I found that Nikon had a few lens options which could not be matched by canon. The 300mm pf, 200-500mm f5.6, and 500mm pf are all kind of in a class of their own. I currently use the 200-500 for my telephoto needs, and I have been thrilled with its performance, especially considering it’s price. I dont think you need to worry too much about lenses anyways; theres certainly a good enough selection for every style of photography. Nikon makes some great gear, so I think you’ll be happy with whatever you choose. Have fun!!

Nice review and I can understand a lot of the mentioned points, but the cropping thing at 2:06 is not exactly right. Yes, of course the focal length gets multiplied by the crop factor which results in a 640 mm tele FF-equivalent, but the aperture has to be multiplied as well, which ultumately results in a 640 mm f9. That being said, it effects only the amount of depth of field, not the amount of light falling onto the sensor, so this part is always a bit tricky.
@tomaskoeck4 жыл бұрын
Spot on mate! What I didn’t communicate clearly was that with telephotos you get the law of compression which will help maintain the depth of field that most nature photographers want, even on a crop sensor body.
@SpencerLupul4 жыл бұрын
He is right on that one. I’m not sure about the law of compression you mention. But no worries, on its own, a 640mm f9 is is just fine!
@tomaskoeck4 жыл бұрын
Spencer Lupul he nailed it on the head! Compression is the term used to describe how telephoto lenses pull the background closer to the subject (depending on distances). That’s exactly why you can sometimes get away with shooting f/9. Because of the rule however, simple math conversions won’t always be accurate to the number given depending on the focal range.

But the "new generation" mirror-less from Canon, the EOS R and the other ones, is amazing too. Now I have to make a choice between the 90D or de EOS R. Do you think that the quality is almost the same. Only the EOS R makes no noise for nature-pictures or weddings. How "bad" is de 90D with the noise you make. I suppose it's possible to put the mirror in the camera open: especially when you make pictures in dark with a shootingtime for several seconds on a stativ of course. I am 60 years old and I live in Holland. My English is not perfect. But I need your opinion between the choice: 90D or de EOS R. Which is the best for pictures because I don't make a lot of video's. The 1.6x crop makes your 400mm FF lens into the FF equivalent of a 640mm f/9 not a 600mm f/5.6
@stripes_in_raw3 жыл бұрын
Your exposure doesn't change, only the depth of field changes. So technically its still at f5.6
@noelchignell10483 жыл бұрын
@@stripes_in_raw Technically the focal length doesn't change either but when you either crop your full frame image or fit a lens to a cropped sensor your field of view narrows and the light collected is only 39% of the full frame so effectively you get more reach and much less light which is why low light performance is much worse for an equivalent crop sensor camera. I love my 7dii and EF100-400ii but I'm not kidding myself that I'm losing low light performance at the same time as I'm gaining reach.
@stripes_in_raw3 жыл бұрын
@@noelchignell1048 Yes Mainly more pixels on the subject. Exposure ISO value remains same. Newer APSC bodies like D500 have excellent noise performance even comparable to earlier full frame bodies. If you use a good body it's mostly a gain.

Sadly not quite the 7Dii is still better in some ways with better build quality and custom controls and much better autofocus with 65 AF points and a dedicated AF processor but the 90D has a more modern better sensor with higher mp and better low light performance It's a shame Canon didn't make a 7Diii with this much improved sensor but hopefully the rumoured R7 crop sensor camera will be the true and much superior replacement for the 7Dii

Hi! I’m an aviation photographer, currently using a Nikon D5200. I’m not very satisfied with the D5200, because of the slow burst mode, and the very small buffer. I’ve heard a few people say they have problems with the buffer on the 90D. How big would you say the buffer is from field testing? And what cards do you use to get those figures? I’ve also seen quite a few out of focus images from the 90D, is that user error, or is there a lot of focus hunting?
@tomaskoeck3 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s a user error, you need a fast card to have a large buffer, I have no problem holding down the shutter and letting it rip! As far as focus hunting that has to do with the lens more than the camera
@varunmylavarapu62813 жыл бұрын
@@tomaskoeck Thanks for the info! How long does it take for the buffer to clear with your card, and what card do you use? Also, I watched this video about the 90D. I'd like to know your thoughts on it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooGzZ5WXg7SJsNU

@@varunmylavarapu6281 , the 90D's buffer can hold 27 shots in RAW, that a 2.7 second burst at 10 frames/sec, and far more when shooting in JPEG. IMO, that quite good. The only time I'd maxed out the buffer is shooting birds in flight, and the buffer cleared pretty quickly. With the Canon cameras I've used, you could shot shorter bursts even when the buffer had only partially cleared. Unlike some of the older Sony cameras that locks up the camera while clearing the buffer.

To get the reach like the 90D has with a FF camera, lens would cost you a fortune.Also with that processor and 32.5 MP, shooting in RAW creates amazing photos.

I love the 90d, I sold my 80d and got it as soon as it got released. Plus you forgot to mention, that the 4k on this camera has no crop which is pretty cool considering that my eos r has a crop. One more thing, you also have to multiply the aperture by 1.6 along with the focal length. So you get a f stop of 8.96 which isn't bad at all because at that reach, you will still get a shallow depth of field. Great video 👍

As good as the 90D is, Canon should have made a Mark III version of the 7D, which would have even better performance than the 90D, and slightly larger and more robust body. Even the current 7D II (which is 5 years older) than the 90D has more useful features than the 90D, in the areas that count, when out in the field (such as better autofocusing, larger buffer size, better weather sealing, and a much longer expected shutter life). Basically the 7D II is a scaled-down version of theh 1DX in many ways.
@stanimal83 жыл бұрын
I think your assessment is mostly on for the .01% of the professional photographers, for ~90% of the users, the 90D is superior. It has pretty good focus system through the view finder, not as good as the 7DII's awesome system, but the 90D also have excellent live view capability, with dual pixel autofocus, and touch screen, IMO selecting focus points on the touch screen is far quicker than selecting using the joystick. And shooting videos on the 90D is pretty nice. While the shutter on to 90D is "ONLY" rated for 100,000K cycles, "just" 50% of the 7DII's, I've never even taken 20,000 photos on ANY camera, and I used to shoot quite a bit a few years ago, far more then anyone else I knew that wasn't a full-time professional photographer, so the additional available cycles would simply be more capacity 90+% of the users will never use. And the 90D will buffer 27 shots in RAW, only 3 less than the 7DII. BTW, I think 27 (2.7 sec bursts) is plenty for sports, plenty to capture the entire basketball shooting sequence, the drive to the basket, and plenty to capture the bat swing, or the slide to base.
@msbrownbeast3 жыл бұрын
@@stanimal8 Actually the price difference between the 2 cameras was not all that much (a few hundred dollars). It's not like the big price gap when compared to a 5D. By the way, I own a 7D (first version), bought new, and I've surpassed 200,000 shutter clicks with that camera. (the shutter on this model is rated at 150k) .Still works fine.

Nearly all of these midrange DSLR’s and Mirrorless cameras have pixel-binned 4K. The “crop mode” on this 90D has more detail and less compressed pixel binning, if that’s something you need. The heavier quality 4K comes when it is recorded externally. It outputs at 10-bit 4-2-2 resolution.
