Every 10dB is noticeably half or twice as loud, because we hear and see logarithmically. 3dB is half or twice as loud linearly, or 1/4 of the noticeable volume change.

Thanks for clarifying this, AZREDFERN

+3dB is sound intensity and +10dB is perceived sound for when doubling. Commenter is Correct. It’s a common mistake.

These sound dampening mats essentially focus on eliminating reverberations that travel through car panels and by using a cymbal, it is my crude representation of said car panel. It's not perfect, but it does show that these mats do stop vibrations travelling through metal objects. I have some joints in my car and it creaks when I go over bumps, can I stuff these in small gaps to eliminate that?

I think you can, yes. I know Resonix use like a butyl putty for exactly this purpose to stop creaks and rattles, etc. I guess you could experiment with little strips and see if that has a similar effect as the Resonix product but I couldn't vouch for this as I haven't done it myself.
