Great video, nice to see the Mk2 Aygo get its well deserved praise. You seemed to have the air on recirculate when you said about it steaming up, that'll make things worse, always have it on outside air coming in. Also, they don't have cruise control, only a speed limiter, which is a shame. I've had a mk1 (C1 and 107), I bought a Mk2 (C1) new in 2014 and bought a new Aygo X last year. They've all been brilliant and I would definitely recommend the Aygo X, love it's added refinement and spec (mainly adaptive cruise) over the older ones.

Thanks for the tips, Chris. Appreciate it. Yes, I whiffed on the cruise control and I've been meaning to leave a pinned comment with an amendment. I know a few people have mentioned that they aren't a fan of the Aygo speed limiter, but I find it rather handy! At the very least, it stops you adding points to your license. Nice to hear you are enjoying the Aygo X, too. That is the obvious upgrade for myself going forward.

@@jamieaygo yes the speed limiter can be very useful, and definitely better than not having anything. I looked at a lot of cars before I bought the Aygo X, but they make a lot of sense if you don't need a bigger car. The reviews always focus on the old engine, but to me that's one of the biggest selling points - it's proven for reliability, it's frugal and fun to use.
@jamieaygo

Agreed! I think the consistency of the Aygo line (and probably most of Toyota's products in general) is something that is taken for granted. You just don't need to worry about turning that ignition on and not having that engine burst into life. Remarkable, really. I have swayed between opinions on the Aygo X and the more I look at it, the more I think Toyota got the marketing wrong on it. Yes, it's a larger Aygo which is the part I struggle with as I like the compactness of the MK2, but it has A LOT of safety kit as standard, which I think they should have leaned on more. I don't think there are many cars in the 10-15K range that offer that level of safety focused tech and reliability for that money. Really solid value offering. It's just the compactness I'd miss but I'm guessing rival success like the Suzuki Ignis forced them to look at the Aygo in a different way.

It’s quite a fun car to drive. But I don’t understand the comments on the clutch. This is usually a quick adjustment, there’s no need to live with a high clutch point. Also you should leave AC on all the time. Makes the inside nicer and keeps the windows clear.
@Azureecosse
@Azureecosse 6 ай бұрын
perhaps its a hydraulic clutch like many cars these days that run off the brake fluid reservoir, I don't believe you can adjust these like the old cable operated clutches of the 80s and 90s that had a manual adjuster on them.

my mom has the 1st gen aygo and it's crazy how similar the 2nd gen is: super high biting point; uncomfortable seats; spacious in front seats but cramped in the back; snappy in first 3 gears, but sluggish on the highway. Still I like 2nd gen more, it looks better and has some quality-of-life improvements

A good summary really. I think Toyota went with a "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" mentality for the internals and really focused on some quality of life improvements and a make over, as you say.

Ive had my MK2 Xtrend since I got it new as my first car in 2019. I love it, whilst it is a city car and perfect for short journeys, Ive also found it capable enough on long distances (as long as you have a lumbar cushion). I drove from the UK to the Alps earlier this year with 4 adults all our luggage and a roof box without any issues across the 2000 mile round trip. Super economical too averaging over 50mpg even with the weight. Only issue is with a full car it does struggle to get up any hill steeper than flat! Id do it all again and can’t see myself changing any time soon, its great fun to own and brilliant with the reliability and cheap running costs

I bought a Peugeot 108 in February this year, basically the same car, I have done quite a lot to make the most of what I've got such as upgrading the speakers, adding the CarPlay head unit, installing my own reversing camera and aftermarket alloy wheels and wider tyres. But the things that I've done that have made a massive difference, which is when I first came across your videos was adding sound deadening and acoustic foam on the insides of the doors and the rear panels (3 door), I also removed the carpet in the boot and added sound deadening/acoustic foam and covered it in carpet, using the wheel well as a place to put a couple of storage boxes. Also, I managed to get some OEM wind deflectors which have made a massive difference with the steaming up issue that you mentioned, they're really slick and were so simple to install. I absolutely love my little car and the comments you made about the parking are absolutely true, although it takes a little while to get up to speed on the motorways (it's also the 1 litre version) it's really nippy around town and I can't really fault it apart from one thing, which I am wondering if you are having the same issue, the top brake light seems to let in water and it collects in the "spoiler" above the rear window, which finds its way down into the boot or leaks out of the brake light, I have been meaning to take it out and add some grease to stop the water from getting in, but with the bad weather I am waiting for the water that is currently in there to evaporate/find its way out before sealing it up.
@jamieaygo
@jamieaygo 5 ай бұрын
Nice observation on the wind deflectors. I am planning to pick some up, too. I imagine they make a bit of difference to the sound profile of the car as well. I think one thing I have noticed is not in the top brake light per se, but on the main rear lights is that they sometimes have condensation build up in them, which I know is a common fault on these cars but was way more prevalent on the MK1 versions of the Aygo. You definitely have the right idea of waiting for better weather to dry them out. For me, it seems to happen more so on the driver side than the passenger. I'll be looking for some new seals in the near future most likely.

I've a 06 reg Citroen C1 we bought back in 2017... Its been sort of looked after and I cant fault it. My other half upgraded to a Citroen DS3 and I got rid of the Citreon C3 and started using the C1. Cheap, Reliable, easy to park, easy to repair. If ask for a radio Facia and some new speakers for the dash as thats all it has seen as im doing a 25 mile commute from monday for the forgoing future. Idea is to make it last another year and make it like yours more comftable to drive on a budget. Depending on how much business travel i will end up doing then i may need to look else where but with its toyota engine its almost bullet proof. As a first car or a car not doing so many miles its a must recomment from me!

Thank you for the kind words! You are spot on about picking one up with Toyota service history although you don't have to worry too much about concurrent history as the one I picked up went private for a few services. I took it to Toyota when I first got it for a service and that extended the warranty. It's a 65 plate, so has a few years to go before it turns 10 years old. As long as it's under 10 years old, you're golden.

The clutch of the aygo can be adjusted fairly easily. It is "only" pulling out and turning a plastic "screw" along the clutch cable (there are Videos of it on youtube - it is kind of iffy to reach and better if you have a friend to push and pull the clutch pedal to get the cable out of its Fixation - still doable though)

The gen 2 auto was my first car. It was a base model, so it was bare bones. I liked it as a first car, but I quickly bought another car. I needed more space and power for motorway driving. If there is one thing about the car I didn't like was a clutch. It was unbearable when setting off up hills. I learnt in a diesel audi A3. I stalled the aygo plenty of times whilst getting used to it. Also, no hill assist on my aygo. So that was fun. It was also pretty uncomfortable on the motorway, too.

The clutch is like this for the C1 and the 107 as well as many other town cars whether the clutch is cable or hydraulically operated. The clutches are installed quite high as it is from factory, but as the clutch wears this raises, and when the clutch assembly gets replaced you are then at the mercy of whoever adjusts the throwout of the clutch via the cable or hydraulic adjustment. You can mitigate this by adjusting the pedal however this is not generally advisable if your clutch isn't new as this can cause premature wear to the clutch, if you make the bite too low then there will still be clutch friction when changing gears etc.
@jamieaygo
@jamieaygo 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing this. It isn't the first time I've heard it. I've thought long and hard about changing the bite point, but as I've got used to it, I'm not too sure if it's something I should do. There is also what you have shared to worry about, too.
@insertnamehere5660
@insertnamehere5660 6 ай бұрын
@@jamieaygo if you're used to how it feels and there is no signs of premature wear such as burning clutch smell or bad gear changes, then I would say there's no reason to change it. If you do decide you want the pedal lower then just make sure you don't make any big pedal adjustments so that the pedal's travel coincides with the clutches throwout (can separate and clamp nicely)

I found that my 2012 Yaris is more of a sweet spot between minimalism and usability. It is still relatively cheap to maintain, but offers slightly more power (1.33 liter version) and more space for passengers and luggage. Wouldn't mind owning an Aygo though, great little cars!
@jamieaygo
@jamieaygo 6 ай бұрын
Nice observation and the Yaris is hugely popular, too. I did think about it, but I rather like how a small car forces you to rethink what you need and the boot space is hugely deceptive allowing me to transplant everything I had in my Audi over, no problem. however, you do hit a ceiling to what you can carry very quickly. If I had kids, I think the Aygo would throw up more problems than I'd be willing to solve, ha.

The one I have for my Aygo isn't technically made for it, but fits fine. I think it's best just trying a few and seeing which one you like best. Mine looks great, but I do think it might have been better if I shot for one that was a bit bigger in terms of storage. It does the job, though. It's also worth mentioning that it's really just for storage and doesn't really work as an armrest because it's too short. I don't mind that as i tend to drive in a relaxed manner anyway and don't really need the armrest to lean on that much. Good shout on the alloys! I am wanting to get some of the new style black "wind turbine" looking ones, but they go for about 150 GBP each with Continental tyres, which isn't bad at all. Just need to save the coin, ha! Strangely I think the real reason I love is is that I don't have to look after it just an annual service and a wash twice a year (I'm serious). If you search for "Arm rest Armrest Console for RENAULT CLIO MK1 MK2 MK3 MK4" on eBay, it brings up the one that looks identical to the one I own. It's the first option. I'm a 100% certain this is the same as mine. It won't act as an armrest as such because it's too low down (you could make it higher) but it's great for storage. Install is super easy. The base plate just screws into the plastic. You can literally just screw holes into the plastic with the screws because it's so soft. Hope that helps!

I've test drove a few when I was trying to figure out what city car to get and the clutch and gearbox linkage were the deciding factors for me, on the mk1 they're absolutely shocking and I've heard the mk2 is only a little better. It's a shame too because I really like the car, but I can't drive something with such a disconnected feeling. Even the cheapest simracing equipment from logitech felt more tactile. In fact the first one I test drove I thought the gearbox and clutch were both broken, but I tried a much nicer condition C1 shortly after and it felt just the same.

You have to go with what you like. The feel of the car isn't for everyone. Coming from an Audi A3, I quite liked the lightness or "disconnected" feeling. Aygo is great but yes the clutch biting point is weird, but having driven a few other Toyotas after like an old avensis it also felt the same way? maybe its a toyota thing. However i think the VW Up is just a much nicer car for about the same price. You get more power (the TSI is great but non turbo 75hp is fine too) and in my opinion a much nicer interior quality feel. It also drives a lot better, the clutch is also much more satisfying. However the tech is better in the Aygo, even the modern up's dont even have a screen and backup camera i think.

Yeah, you have to pick your poison really, don't you. I was actually looking at an UP! and almost bought one. I was specifically looking at the High UP! that has heated seats. I'm unsure if it had a reverse camera, but maybe it had parking sensors. The one I looked at had suspected mileage fraud on it, so I stayed away and then the Aygo just happened to come along. The park plug change timing is at 60,000 miles, they are long life plugs. I also changed the interior light bulb for an LED and put a timer on it so it stays on for a while when I shut the door, allowing me to put on seat belt, key in ignition etc. My original bulb was not a halogen bulb though, just a normal incandescent bulb. I had fitted that with a delay unit which dimmed the bulb to off after a time I set, but I needed a different unit for the LED bulb as that cannot be dimmed, so the light just cuts off abruptly. Chrome - personal taste, i added the chrome strip across the tailgate, the chrome foglamp surrounds and the chrome flashes each side of the grille at the front. Over the 3 1/2 years I have owned mine I have averaged 57 mpg - the trip computer is optimistic and normally reads at least couple of mpg more than i actually get based on fuel put in. Agree re the very high clutch, but my last Mk1 Aygo had a high clutch too so I am used to it

That's really interesting, you know. I can totally see why you've done it. a dimmer switch would be ideal to put your seat belt on, get sorted, etc. I bet it's a real game-changer at night. I am toying with the idea of interior lighting for the same purpose. Chrome is a nice touch. I've not thought about the outside much apart from the crazy idea of installing the extra spotlights under the main ones, ha! I do want to put alloys on it at some point, too! @@jamieaygoYes, the interior light delay unit makes a massive difference. Mine is adjustable for the delay time, but i set it to how long I want it and it hides by the interior light in the head lining. I have an Aygo Expression so it came with alloys. I will not be getting the new Aygo x, it seems to be lot bigger (9" longer and 5" wider) (based on the yaris floorpan I think), though I gather it has a much tighter turning circle. That wide it would not go in my garage anyway. I had a 2013 Mk 1 Aygo and could drive in, with my Mk 2 I have to fold the driver's door mirror in. You are spot on that it is based on the Yaris chassis (only way to get economies of scale, apparently) and the size increase isn't really something I, or I imagine many other Aygo fans are interested in. Arguably, it is quite a stretch to call it an Aygo in the truest sense but I can see why they are following markets trends towards bigger cars, which I think is unfortunate. I would definitely buy one as a second car for days when I just want to relax and not have to squeeze the Volvo land barge into parking spaces. Only downside was the incredibly tiny boot and the fact that larger cars sit up your chuff trying to intimidate you. I did not miss the Volvo much apart from the boot size which is vast, interior quality in the little Aygo was laughable but it was a loan car so was not too bothered.

There are lots of reasons for a high biting point on a clutch, but first you need to know whether your clutch is "Cable" activated or "Hydraulically" activated. If you car has a Cable type clutch, a high biting point could mean the clutch friction disc is very near the end of its life (around 70.000 miles from new). It could also mean the clutch cable has stretched and needs adjustment. This would only be the case if the cable isn't self adjusting, some are, some aren't. If your car has a Hydraulically operated Clutch, it almost always means your friction plate is about to start slipping because it's at the end of its life. (again, around 70,000 miles from new) The problem with buying a very small used car is that they are usually bought new by elderly people who can have a habit of riding the clutch shortening its life by up to 50%, which would be around 40.000 miles from new. Before you scream at me, I'm elderly too, but I'm sorry to say, a lot of elderly people do ride the clutch.

At least that was my first impression of it. Also, with it being bigger, you lose the advantage of being able to park it anywhere, which I rather like. @@jamieaygo I've driven the Aygo X and its only advantage is its actually easier to park and manourve, those tall narrow tyres/wheels enable the wheels to turn sharper and it does, very tight lock on it. However the cost for a set of tyres on them is eye watering and they make the brakes look tiny especially at the back. It also compromises on efficency and its ability to accelerate as the Aygo X is noticeably slower. The handling is awful it has a high centre of gravity which they compensate for with a very stiff suspension it still feels like it wants to roll in the corners even if you just take them 3 mph too quick. The comfort and ride quaility is poor due to the stiff suspension. There is more boot space and I assume more leg room. Overall its a big step down especially given how much money they want for one.

I got given one of these as a courtesy car while my MX5 was being repaired. My notes on this are: same as you - wierdly high biting point. zero clutch pedal feel. a bit hard to get used to moving from the MX5, which has a wierdly low bite point. wipers - on max speed can just about keep up with normal dual wipers on their medium speed. inadequate in heavy rain. controls - shifter feels like moving a spoon through a bowl of porridge, zero feel from steering. suspension - feels very wallowy (might be due to the car I'm coming from being overly great in this regard). hard plastic door cards - my elbow actually started to hurt on a long drive (yes I'm a pussy). engine - completely gutless. revving it out doesn't do anything, you still move off at the same speed. I actually felt unmotivated to try to drive it fast because it gave you so little back for your effort. seats - zero bolstering and I was falling out of them. These were actually the limit of the cars handling more so than the suspension, which still had more to give. Finally, and one I didn't expect, is that people kept cutting me off all the time lol. I learned to drive a few years ago in a Suzuki Alto and while this was similarly cheap in build and price, it had great controls and a really peppy engine that rewarded you for revving it out and I was quite disappointed that this wasn't similar to be honest. I average 47 to the gallon beating the absolute piss out of it for the 2 weeks I had it, which was seriously impressive honestly.

Edit: I made this a lot longer than I meant too. Apologies. I drive a 2018 Honda Fit here in the US. I think this car is even smaller than that? I think my Fit is so tiny already and really want to move up size one day. Im scared to death of hitting absolutely anything as I would most certainly die immediately. Its easy to drive, gets absolutely amazing fuel economy, and small means easy to fit everywhere. But these cheap cars are built CHEAP. The build quality of these cars isnt that good compared to larger cars here. Another reason Americans are fond of them. Regardless of the brand these cars are just bad at build quality in the reviews Ive seen. And they are not taken seriously here as their looks are kind fugly. The Fit, Yaris, etc and this Aygo are not deisgned for us at all and look way too...something. They dont appeal to Americans like old small cars did in the 80s and 90s. They just forgot how to style them right for mass market appeal. It along with all other modern small cars gets made fun because people find the looks just ugly. Also I have realized most of us Americans grow up in our parents cars and our first used cars are normally Corollas, Accords, Camrys, Civics, or a small suv or a truck. Those cars despite being old and such just offer a lot being what they are. So if someone steps into these cars even brand new they will be shocked at how bare bones jt is to their car which is 15 years old at that point. Its amazing to me how my Fit as three cameras, magic seats, and a crazy infotainment center but lacks lumbar support for my back and cup holders for the rear. Among other things. And definitely one draw back is how expensive small cars are to insure because of how dangerous they are. I wont get a car this small again simply for that alone. It all comes back to the absolute lack of safety. I would die hitting a pole. Let alone a Camry or F-150. I am paying 200 dollars a month for it currently. Maybe its my insurer and I could get a better deal? Looking to fix it for next year. Its crazy to me the different mindset yall have over there. I guess when they are everywhere and in more denser areas they dont look out of place. Everywhere my tiny bright orange Fit goes its sticks out like a sore thumb next to all the other cars lol. They smallest offerings we have left I think are the Versa, Mirage, and Rio. None of which are particularly grand cars from what Ive seen. Automakers just never tried hard here. Kei cars over in Japan should be the standard in how to package a small car. So many features that those same brands refuse to offer on other cars.

Thanks for sharing this. It's a great way to highlight certainly the cultural differences when it comes to cars. Our roads are very narrow and larger cars just have a harder time on them, although it hasn't stopped them being popular. Range Rovers are everywhere. In the UK at least, smaller, less powerful cars are cheaper to insure if anything and the Aygo that I have at least scored reasonably on the Euro NCAP safety test, but they aren't going to measure up to larger cars. That test also becomes somewhat redundant over time. Interestingly, someone commented on my "Is the Aygo safe" video and made a good point that with electric cars becoming more and more popular on the roads, people who drive ICE cars will likely take more of the brunt in a crash between the two, just because the electric car will likely be heavier. The Japanese have some wonderfully small cars that I envy. This Nissan Cube been one of them!

My wife has a 2020 Aygo MK2 Auto and its a nasty thing.Its the X Trend model.If you want a laugh go and test drive the auto and see what you think.The worst gearbox ever made in history.The only cool thing about it is it has flappy paddles haha.

Brilliant, ha. This seems to be the consensus amongst those that have commented about the auto box on the Aygo. Sounds like I may have dodged a bullet.

The manual gear change and clutch feel on the manual Aygo & Co. might feel a bit shit, but it's nowhere near as shit as the automatic. The automatic available on these cars is not a true automatic with a torque converter, or even just a CVT. It's one of those horrid automated manuals, which take absolute ages to change between gears and are jerky as hell at low speeds. You dodged a bullet by getting the manual.

Toyota was dumb for never electrifying this car Compared to the VW eUP, and the abominable, cynical Aygo Cross

I couldn't agree more. It seems like a great candidate for electrification. if they don't do it, at some point....I will! *runs off to scrounge together enough coins

@@jamieaygo Transition One seems like the most likely bet, but they've gone quiet for a year now

Totally. Toyota have been one of, if not THE most trepidatious when it comes to electric vehicles. Also, given that the Aygo X became essentially a bigger Aygo, they will likely follow the market more than anything. At the moment, the "market" doesn't seem interested in smaller cars, which is a shame.

😂 Nothing gets past you, Mike. Proper bought into the marketing hype, haven't I! At any rate, it saves me points on my license. I've got some wriggle room, but I don't want to tighten it!
