It is a common mistake among beginners to believe that Black Lotus is a good card. But upon further investigation you will realize that the Lotus cannot deal any damage and that is bad, because the way to win a game of Magic the Gathering, is by dealing damage

My favorite card is Selfess Savoir. 1 White mana for a 1/1 dog creature with the ability " Sacrifice Selfless Savior. Another target creature you control gains indestructible until the end of turn". The flavor text being "She raised him from a orphan pup and gave him a life of love. With his last act, he thanked her". First magic card that ever made me tear up. There's actually a secret lair version where the flavor text is "I never got the chance to say "thank you" or goodbye" 😢😢

My favorite card has always been Dryad Arbor. It's perfect in every context it can be used. Turn 1 green sun zenith for dryad has just something that makes me think "This game could end now and I would be happy". I just love the concept of these bushes offering resources and a blocker, plus the occasional flavourful first blood with a literal forest that has no business attacking is priceless. You can also fetch it for an instant blocker or useful body, it's amazing. There will never be any other card that will make me feel the way Dryad Arbor does, I am truly glad it exists.

In a similar vein, Hundred-Handed One from original Theros has been my favorite card and that card that got me to fall further into this game. Magic was something that my friends played around with while I was growing up but I never truly understood or cared to dive into it. Coming out of high school and playing in a kitchen-table draft of Theros and opening Hundred-Handed One in the third pack completely changed my interest in the game. The Monstrous mechanic, while underwhelming from a gameplay perspective, was a thematic banger, being able to make this Giant into an impassable wall made me fall in love with the design space associated with creating both cards and the environments they reside in

Whenever I'm asked the first thought I have is "Vampire Nighthawk". When I first got into Magic it was on Duals of the Planeswalkers 2013, I think, and there was a white black Lifegain vampire deck I liked. My favorite card is Doomed Traveller, and I think many of the same reasons you like Goblin Grenade can apply to it. It's simple to understand, but still manages to capture an entire story with its mechanics, art, and flavor text. I also love how it teaches new players that your creatures are going to die, and that isnt necessarily bad. It can even be a benefit to you! As far as sentimentality, I started in M15 and my first deck was GW token convoke deck. Coming from Yugioh, the playstyle of token strategies felt so unique and fun, it is still my favorite archetype to play today. And I can thank my little Doomed Travellers (as well as Triplicate Spirits and Intangible Virtue) for getting me attached to the game.

Definitely a fun video and interesting to see why this card is your favourite there. For myself, my favourite card is definitely Defient Elf from the legions set. It's a 1/1 elf with trample. It's got such a serious looking elf with a bit of flavour text showing how determined they are to fight. But they're a 1/1 elf with trample.... its absolutely hilarious and useless on it's own and I love it every time it comes up in my tribal elf deck.

@@TheJadeFist very true, lots of ways to pimp him up. The tribal deck I have him in has several affects like that. Where elves are globally pumped up, adding 1/1 counters to elves, and other similar stuff. It definitely gives him a chance to shine. My fave is Dryad Arbor, specifically the From the Vault version. In contrast to Goblin Grenade explaining exactly what it does, I adore how this seemingly vanilla card only works because of all the rules that make the game what it is. I think I have two favorite magic cards, with pretty different reasons for each. One is Obsidian Fireheart- it was the first mythic I ever opened, the art is both awesome and confusing (I spent so long looking at it trying to figure out the perspective and which limb was which), and it has the most objectively and unnecessarily cool reminder text in the game with "the land continues to burn after Obsidian Fireheart has left the battlefield." I just love how they decided to go with the shorter, more intuitive phrasing rather than trying to write it out in authentic magic-rules-speak. My other favorite card is M10's Harm's Way. Probably most people haven't even heard of it since it's an old "bad" uncommon but it's seriously one of the most satisfying cards to resolve in the entire game when you play it right. For those who don't know, it's a 1 mana white instant that essentially redirects 2 damage that would be dealt to you or a permanent you control to any other target. Damage prevention is usually pretty bad but I swear this card can play better than Shock, or a lot like Lightning Helix. It's the best Gotcha moment ever when your opponent thinks you're about to trade 1-for-1 on creatures, only to have you save your creature and then also kill another one of their X/2s. And there's no greater high than preventing lethal damage to yourself and sending 2 back at your opponent. It's a super situational card and honestly still not that good but I beg anyone reading this to give it a shot in a casual deck because it can be such a hit of serotonin. I also once had it in a kitchen table boros deck alongside Goblin Grenade :)
@Kobabel333 Жыл бұрын

Ooh, my favorite card has been Possibility Storm for pretty much all my time with magic. Not only was it a rare from Dragon's Maze, the first set I opened, it immediately appealed to my love of stupid complexity, "game within a game" type effects are super awesome imo, it's a surprisingly versatile combo piece, and I'm an open contrarian, meaning that having a jank rare from Dragon's Maze as my favorite card instead of something actually iconic is inherently pleasing to me. Also, the art is awesome.

Honestly Farewell probably is my favorite card. Its very mechanics are laid out like a poem - they're simple and the explanation is obvious, and while its nature as exiling makes it extremely permanent mutual purging, it practically begs you to do something weird to take advantage of the modality. And the simple name + aesthetic of the card not as some vast destructive apocalypse, but as a gentle blowing away. Somehow, in the anime as hell set, they wordlessly /nailed/ the vibe of the Weird Existential Ending a lot of people love

Also Spice, you of course can do whatever you want but I enjoy the short videos as much as the long ones! I'd say do more if it makes making the longer ones easier or gives you a "break" of sorts

My favourite card is Ornithopter. Seeing it for the first time opened me to the world of Magic games beyond 'mindlessly smash creatures into each other'. Made me start thinking creatively about deck design. Took a while for the lesson to take, but it happened all the same. Honourable mention to One With Nothing, my beloved.

Cards like Ornithoper really sell the difference between Magic and Yugioh, it isn't always about simply having the biggest dude on the board, infact most of the time, it isn't the biggest boy who wins. Cards can be useful and powerfulin other ways. Ornithoper both having flying can be a free flying blocker or used as a flying to launch a potentially unblocked attack, or being a free artifact for affinity. Throw a cranial plating on it and that little 0/2 is going to chunk off 15 health

Openeded a paradox engine in one of my first packs and had so much fun with it in a 20$ mono green standard cryptolyth rights deck. Not sure if its truly my favorite but I love how simple the text box is compared to its insane potential and how it feels like youre building a machine :)

Sentimentally speaking, mine'd be either Goblin Electromancer or Young Pyromancer. Both cards that formed the core of my Izzet spellslinger deck's philosophy, which itself was the result/cause of me really finding my colors, so to speak. As for flavor, honestly, there's a bunch, but off the top of my head... Tragic Poet, from the Dominaria printing. The vibe, of someone who's desperately hurting inside, but still desiring to help others and be remembered is just... perfect.

for me it has to be sundial of the infinite (and by extension obeka but sundial was the OG). My favourite part of magic is testing the limits of magic. To bend, warp and conceive of wild combinations or ideas for a deck. two of my favourite deck have concepts that in some way or the other violate the fundamental things that make magic, magic. And then there is sundial. a card so seemingly useless on the surface conveyed in such an intriguing simple way to immediately catch my curiosity upon seeing it asking me to understand why and how it would ever be used (in its own right like one with nothing yet it holds far more untold power). why would you possibly waste mana to... end your turn sooner?! that's awful! the cards wonderful intricate looking device, name tells you it should be powerful. Not only that but this card is the true gateway into advanced magic. Learning how this card is used (both correctly and also learning the incorrect misunderstandings) teaches you so much about phases and turns that you possible had never thought about before. Also at the end of the day... nothing beats seeing a new players face turn from curious amusement to total horror as i play some absolutely terrible cards (its own wonderful difficulty in making any sundial style deck is you want to maximise value by ignoring cards that without it are frankly terrible and highly likely to screw you over) and turn them into power nine level plays. (p.s. i wasn't trying to turn this into an essay itself but making me think about my favourite card simply brought this out of me)

Ahh spice… when I started playing I bought a box of a couple thousand cards. More than a 100 copies of goblin grenade in there and I’ve made countless goblins decks. The efficiency is great; hilarious card and amazing theming. Great vid, you nailed the passion of mtg here

I like that you brought a mention of Goblin Game at the beginning of the video. It's such a silly card, but I love it and actually got to play it with people who found it as hilarious as I do the other night. It was great!

I LOVE cards that have that kind of personality. Goblin Grenade you are strapping a dynamite on that goblin and throwing it at its target. My favorite example is Stone Giant. It gives a creature with toughness less than it flying until end on turn and on next end step it is destroyed. The Giant literally throws a smaller creature and it dies on impact.

I do love "Worship". Mainly because its flavour text "Believe in the ideal, not the Idol". It's an unassuming yet powerful message. Serra is a favorite persona of mine since I started playing Magic and this message from her in this card is simply perfect. To me, it's touching and profound. Mechanically, the card is also beautiful, yet not that powerful. And aesthetically... gosh, Mark Zug's despiction of Serra, her pose, her statue and the surroundings... the colors... I can't even describe. I fell in love with that card the moment I saw it.

Anguished Unmaking. It was thw first card that got me invested in Magic as a story, which is usually the tipping point for me to actually play a game. The art for it became my first playmat, and the tragedy of Avacyn and the other Innistrad angels lead to my current love and collection of angels as a whole. I know its nowhere near the best, but that low-cost exile saw a lot of use in my favorite early decks

My favorite card was already called out in the first thirty seconds lol Alesha always holds a place in my heart. A perfect confluence of recently coming out as trans, a block that also became my favorite, and a commander deck that I have never taken apart filled with some other particular favorites of mine Master of Cruelties and Lim-Dul's Paladin.

My favorite card: Erg Raiders. Back in the mid-90s, I felt it was sort of my card, because others weren't playing it around where I lived, while I found it to be very good in tournaments, because it could easily slip past Counterspell on the play and we didn't have many such effective creatures back in the day.

Spirit of the Night. Two reasons: 1. The idea that you could summon this monstrosity straight out of your deck by assembling a team of three smaller creatures was a big "aha" moment for young me. 2. The art is incredible.

Favourite card is definitely Armadillo Cloak, for similar reasons to yours Spice. It was one of the first cards I ever saw, it has Goblin Grenade's similar silly yet serious flavour and feel, it's powerful in the right situation but is certainly no Lightning Bolt, and it helps you learn about the terrible unyielding math that is 2 for 1-ing yourself by playing Auras on your creatures without a Boggle plan. One of the first cards that totally wrecked me and my Armadillo Cloak plans was, funnily enough, Goblin Grenade.

Such a phenomenal video as always - the description of the flavor text's fantasy captures so much of what I love about your scripts and videos, such wonderful scene-building that really lends itself to perfectly capturing what it'd be like to witness a Goblin Grenade for real. That said, I resent the ad reel's implication that Slobad is single. We *all* know he can get it. c;

Wow trip down memory lane there! I also started about that time and fondly remember opening this card and looking for goblins to pair it with. The person who taught me magic sent my life total to 0 many a time with this card. Also points for reminding me of Frontline Sage from my very first sealed deck! Haven’t thought of that guy in a decade

This is a lovely breakdown and examination. Nicely done. Wheel of Misfortune is probably my favorite. It might used to have been Time Spiral, but, my heart is in a different place now. As someone who put Goblin Game on the screen in this video, I'm sure you can understand.

I remember being a little kid, maybe 6 or 7 years old, watching my parents and their friends playing Magic around the fold up card table from the closet. I asking my dad once what his favorite Magic card was, and I still remember his answer: Goblin Grenade. I wish I could've played with him. Thanks, Spice. You've reminded me of good times.

I love this kind of takes on cards because it reveals a lot of the mind of the player... In my case, I hadn't really had the one favorite card, until I bought an outdated precon deck (not commander) and saw Hailstorm Valkyrie... The art is really beautiful in on itself; but then you read it, what, Black mana angel wizard with trample and flying, and a pump ability which uses the color agnostic snow mana to activate... That's almost as if all colors and colorless were represented in a single mono colored card, and that's just mesmerizing to me!

Vendilion Clique, personally. Just beautiful art, a neat cost, neat stats, elegant keywords (with flying and flash together) and a great ETB ability, but one that also gives you opponent some compensation, so both players feel kind of good. Plus you can use it on yourself for added interesting decisions and strategic depth. Add that to being a faerie and being from Lorwyn (the best expansion) and it's just an all-round pleasure to play with.

I opened an Arcanis the Omnipotent in (at least close to) the first pack I ever opened. I think it’s more art and flavor text for me than mechanics - he has ever since been my “ominous, mysterious wizard badass” mental image, to the point that I made him in Sculpey around that time and have a half-finished denim cloak sitting in my parents house from about a decade later.

The first card that amazed me was Omniscience. I had just learnt the basic principles of the game, and Omniscience completely broke those principles in a way that I found very fun and silly. At a lofty 10 mana it felt like an achievement unlocked to successfully cast it too. Honorable mention is Experimental Frenzy. I loved that mono-red pre-constructed standard deck that it came in, and I've tried very hard to make it playable in other formats after its rotation out of standard

Consuming aberration was my very first magic card. It was a holo and was gifted to me. I didn't know about milling decks at the time so I just put a smorgasbord or blue black cards that didn't synergize with each other but I still had a lot of fun and as soon as I casted it I knew the game was over for my friends

The notion about Goblin Grenade helping to broaden game understanding by way of getting the player thinkin' 'bout those Goblins is a very real one, too. When the question of favorite cards was posed, I immediately thought of a Yavimaya Enchantress I pulled back when Urza's Destiny first came out, which served as my own first crucial moment of "Wait a minute... could I build an entire deck around this whole Enchantment interaction?" Suffice to say, it was the start of a much more meaningful understanding of the game. And it's good to remember that cards like this really can have teaching moments built right into them.

My favorite card is Shaman of Spring. Back in high school, when I was making my first D&D character, I couldnt find any art that looked as I imagined her to. Remembering a Magic card I loved, I quickly pulled up the image in a photo editing software and changed the hair color, pixel by pixel, to a vibrant ginger. Every time I see Shaman of Spring, I am reminded of all the fun times I had in that campaign. Mori Nisse, legend of my heart.

I don’t have an eternal favorite card, but I think light-paws is my current favorite, albeit pretty repetitive to play. Feather is pretty cool too, as is the guy who puts poison counters on your opponent when your stuff becomes targeted. Anyway, awesome video, good luck on the move! ❤️

Emrakul the Aeons Torn. Edit: After reconsideration, the card that genuinely got me interested in the game was Benthic Infiltratior. It has decent toughness and abilities for the cost. Additionally, it introduced the concept of exile to me through ingest, and made exiling cards my favorite mechanic, as well as the Eldrazi as my favorite species. Finally, its ability that prevents it from being blocked is simply amazing.

My favorite card is Dreamscape Artist. I love planar chaos so much, and I utterly ADORE spellshapers, and dreamscape captures both of those perfectly. Land ramp in blue, and the versatility in the option select to change an unwanted card into more resources. I love it so much, my partner bought me 250 copies as a joke.

hell yeah! this is also my favorite mtg card (in its entirety) it was in one of the first decks i played and i loved everything about it the flavor text was so high brow for how silly the art is! (my other favorite is the swamp and island drawn by ron spear, best land art to date)

Tibalt cosmic impostor is my absolute favourite. It was a card I pulled out of a birthday present pack from my sister, right after I started playing again after a long hiatus. It was the first big money card I had ever pulled, so it was the catalyst to me using sleeves for the first time. It also introduced me to my now favourite deck archetype: thieves. I love using my opponent’s cards and effectively creating a mirror match every game. The art as well really pulls me in. The art of a sneaky guy, but not just any old serious dimir sneak. A sort of chaotic rogue that revels in the discord he sows.

My favorite card is Starfield of Nyx. Not only is it a beautiful piece of art, enchantress is my favorite style of deck to play. It encapsulates what I think enchantments should be when you extrapolate the game out to the flavor idea of a wizard’s duel: a field spanning effect that changes the rules of reality, turning enchantments into creatures that can punch faces. Plus the flavor idea of old enchantments being born again from the stars is a really cool vibe and it’s just pretty c:
