I have asthma and I reacted to dogs as a teenager I would always have a runny nose and uncontrolled asthma. During the pandemic I found a small kitten under my car. Because I had allergic reactions to dogs I had a lot of people telling me to not keep it. I longed for a pet and my one and only dog died in 1999 after which my parents never had any pets. I still took him in and later took his brother too. I share the same bed with them and beat covid and a severe asthma attack with them never leaving my side. They gave me courage and hope and I beat the delta variant. I surprisingly have no reaction to them. They are the domestic short hair who sleep on my pillow and snuggle with me. Even when I have an attack it is so much more easier for me to deal with it and the asthma is so much more controlled. Of course cat or no cat, I do have inhalers and nasal sprays to take every day. But having these angels around me is truly a blessing. In fact one of the wakes me up if I am having an attack when I am asleep.

I'm so glad that you are doing ok with cats. My husband is similar to you. I feed one feral and 2 strays. They want to come in so bad. I want all 3 but my husband is severely allergic to dogs and cats. I sneaked the cat in for a few hours a day for a week. My husband got really sick with asthma. Any advice? 2 of the cats have bonded with me. I really ♥️ them. He is especially allergic to domestic short hair cats 😥.

I also am allergic to dogs and cats. I suffer from mild asthma attacks. I had asthma as a child playing sports and the older I got, it went away. It started coming back with pet allergies and very mildly. So far dogs that are "hypoallergenic" have not affected me. I used to have a cat and my only work around was to make sure my cat never entered my room. This way I wouldnt have issue waking up gasping for air. One dog I ended dog sitting for a year, was a mini schnauzer and I had zero issues. The dog slept next to me and I never once had an asthma attack. Im wondering if I'll be okay with some of these cats mentioned on this list.

I own a Balinese cat and am highly allergic to cats. As long as I take an allergy pill and nasal spray every day, I’m completely fine. Balinese cats are talkative, VERY playful/active, intelligent, an affectionate. They’re almost like dogs in the fact that it helps to have more than one person looking after them because they constantly crave human interaction!

I have a Balinese cat! I’m fairly allergic- if I walk into someone’s house who has cats I’ll immediately sneeze- and if I pet another cat I have to make sure to wash my hands. My Balinese cat I don’t react to! She sleeps near my face and I’m fine. I am still slightly allergic when she scratches me. I also feed her Purina Live clear- you’ll always technically be slightly allergic to your cat because no cat is free of that feld1 protein but as someone with a fairly severe cat allergy having a Balinese has been amazing!

My allergist told me that you can build up a tolerance to your own cat. That's been true for me. I just have to watch they don't put their nose on my neck during a snuggle. I'll get hives where I'm touched especially by their noses. I found my long haired cats to be less allergenic than short haired cats. Anyone else out there in You Tube Land have a similar experience?

Heh, I do not share your experience, unfortunately! I had longhaired cats when I was growing up - not pedigree, but they were Himalayan/Persian. And I was *horribly* allergic to them, for their entire long lives, and if anything it just got worse with time! 😿 I was already on a cocktail of prescription meds for my hayfever, which only really took the edge of the allergies at all, and I still really struggled with extended time outside in the summer, especially near especially pollen-y places. My cats also went outside and rolled around in grass and weeds and such and basically mopped up all the pollen with their long fur, then brought it back in to hit me with a double-pronged attack! 🤧 I loved them dearly, but I would have to do things like keep them out of my room so I had a “safe zone” to retreat to when the allergies kicked in and I needed to withdraw from the kitties for a while. They didn’t have the run of the whole house as they were indoor/outdoor, so to an extent there was some control over the spread of allergens (we lived in a fairly rural area and they would often come back soaking wet from the rain or caked in mud, so they could only come and go freely from the easily cleanable rooms! At least until we’d checked them out and made sure they weren’t bringing entire cowpats into the living room along with them, then they’d come into other rooms with our supervision 🤣). I would also put an old shirt or blanket over my clothes and lap when they came and sat on me so I could more easily remove the allergens from me afterwards (and/or change into different clean clothes after spending a lot of time with them), wash my hands when I’d been stroking them, etc. Even with all of that, it was still really tough dealing with the allergies (and also tough to tear myself away from them!), but there was no question we would ever get rid of them. I just suffered 😹 I feel like there’s a broad range of how severe someone’s allergy is, and mine was waaaay up there. I’m happy yours is nowhere near that bad, and that you can enjoy your furry friends so much 🥰 I’m definitely also allergic to shorthaired cats, though I’ve spent much less time around them than the cats I’ve lived with. Friends’ domestic shorthaired cats have triggered my allergies though, and also a partner’s parents’ Siamese cat - possibly the most severe cat allergy experience of my life, hitting hard and without much warning, compared to the slower build up to that kind of level with my longhaired cats - to the point where we nearly had to leave in the middle of the night and drive hours back home. I had to laugh with seeing Siamese in the list for being good for people with allergies! 🙅🏻♀️ However, I have found that I’m not* allergic to Ragdolls! This was a miraculous revelation to me 😻 My partner in 2015 rescued a half-Ragdoll cat (we don’t know what the other half is), and while I was worried at first, turns out that cat is made of magic - not a single sniffle, no itchy eyes, no coughing or wheezing, no skin rash or hives, etc. I can completely sink my face into his fur and spend time with him 24/7, with sustained testing over all the years since then, and I’m good. He also got two kittens a year or two ago, Ragdoll Maine Coon cross = also magic! 😻 My neighbours across the hall have two Ragdolls too, and I cat-sit for them whenever they’re away - also magic! Last but not least - a friend of mine who also has cat allergies has a purebred Maine Coon, and neither of us are allergic to him either :) There are some theories that light coloured cats are less allergenic than dark coloured cats, and my limited experience aligns with that (my cats growing up were one grey, one black; MagicCat #1 is mostly white with orange patches, MagicKitten #1 is a cream tabby boy and MagicKitten #2 is an orange tabby girl). The Siamese cat I mentioned was the exception though - all cream, still terrible! 😸 They also say female cats tend to produce less allergens than males too (my cats growing up were males, but so are two of the MagicCats, so 🤷🏻♀️), as well as kittens producing less than older cats. Seems like the theory why some people aren’t allergic to Ragdolls is due to their allergy being caused more by the cat’s undercoat and dander trapped inside it (because Ragdolls don’t have an undercoat, like the Balinese mentioned here), compared to being allergic to the fel d1 protein (and a handful of others) found in saliva (and subsequently spread all over their coat too). From the sounds of your hives caused by their noses, my guess is your allergy is to fel d1 or one of the other saliva proteins, and my experience seems to point at undercoat/dander (my childhood cats had incredibly dense undercoats that were individually very fine, always matting even despite a regular grooming routine, and always floating in the air! 🤧). I’m in the process of getting a cat of my own, because I 1000% need a feline friend of my own! I badly want a Maine Coon (or Maine Coon crossed with Ragdoll, especially as I’ve had good success with them… though it’s harder to find reputable breeders for the crossbreed who’ve done all the due diligence with screening for health conditions the breeds are susceptible to, etc), but I think I need to do a final test to confirm that I’m not allergic to adult pure Maine Coons, without that Ragdoll part of the genes reducing the undercoat of doom like in the MagicKittens! Going to look for a local breeder who’ll let me go and sniff their cats 😂 Gah I’m so sorry this got so long! I got carried away because this is very much top of mind for me at the moment!

@@EmmaVB82 , that’s very interesting because due to my nephew being highly allergic to cats we had to take in my sisters Maine Coon cat. And every time they would come over to visit he would have terrible allergic reactions. So after Mufasa(the cat) passed away I looked into what breeds were safer to be around for people suffering with allergies. I decided on getting a Siamese. Fortunately it has worked out for the best because every time they come to visit he has very little to no problem. I guess when it comes right down to it, it just depends on the individual.

@@EmmaVB82 It's funny because I'm VERY allergic to siamese cats too. For what it's worth, my long haired cats were pure bred Maine Coons, I got one in Canada and 1 in Ohio and a Birman that came from Philadelphia. There are reputable breeders out there ask around. MCs have such a wonderful personality and sound so cute with their chirps and trills. Birman cats do not have an undercoat and are extremely easy to care for, they have long fur but need almost no grooming. I'm all currently catless, I'm searching for a good breeder too. Another couple of cat breeds to consider are the Siberian and Norwegian Forest Cat. The Siberian is supposed to be very hypoallergenic. Interestingly both those breeds are related to the Maine Coon. Check out Birmans, I know they have their annual cat show in Medina, Ohio in the summer. They are so silky and beautiful. Their eyes are an astonishingly blue with a hint of purple near their pupils. Believe me I've suffered through miserable seasonal allergies that are really year round. I'm allergic to just about anything with fur. But I will not give up having cats. I just love them too much. Good luck in your hunt for cats. I'd suggest a cat show but that would be a disaster. Ask me how I know? 🙄

Second the Siberian cat recommendation. I’m allergic to cats and I’ve had a Siberian cat for 13 years. I’ve never had a reaction to her. I seem to be getting less allergic to other cats too. Just a few years ago I would have a reaction when visiting friends with cats. Now I don’t. They’re soft and fluffy too.

I looked at so many cats before I found one that I could tolerate. She's part British short hair and parts is parts Siberian. Anyway her coat is short but thick and keeps the dander close to her skin. We also brush every other day.. and because she freaking loves it. We bath 4x a year, or as needed. Like when she got under a car and came out painted in grease. I have had mixed experiences. I've had a cat run against my hand and gotten hives instantly. I've had my friends Cheetoh (real breed) do the same thing and no reaction. I will get a small reaction from litter paws. Now if I could only learn to clean regularly.

It actually depends on the amount of cat's allergens and how sensitive the person is. My boyfriend is highly allergic to cats and dogs. We had one Balinese and 3 Siberians. He could only lived with one Siberian. The cat is female, own cotton like fur and seems to produce very few fell D1. It has been 9 Months now and he never got any allergic reaction toward the cat. I only find it sad for the cat, that she must live without other cat's company.

My cat doesn't eat grapes but.. she does like to play with them so she roams around with a grape in her mouth looking for someplace to hide it. I already knew her hiding place so I used to leave it there for her to play but after watching one of your videos I saw that cats shouldn't eat grapes or raisins and if they do it can lead to kidney failure so I got scared and stopped her from playing with grapes and if I did see it in her hiding place I pick it up. I lock them out of my room at night - this seems to be the key as when i let them sleep with me after a few weeks i start to get allergies. As long as they stay out of my room at night i have no issues even when i brush and cuddle them! They are also more affordable than siberian because they are less known, they can be half the price even from ethical breeders that hand them over with registration papers, fixed, and vaccinated.

All this is nice and dandy, but the real solution is to solve your allergies! For attaining this purpose, you need to adopt some important changes in your diet. First, avoid industrial foods; second, avoid starchy foods and sugar and foods rich in sugars. Adopt a more outdoors active life. Expose yourself to sunlight, and make full reserves in vitamin D3, and also A, and K2. Adopt more green veggies in your diet. My best of health wishes to you, and company of your beloved cat(s).

There are comments saying they’re glad they don’t have allergies for a reason… While I’m sure there are people who have their own tastes and will find these cats adorable, and ultimately the majority of owners are going to fall in love with their cat no matter what they look like, of course people want cute-looking pets!! Unless perhaps someone just wants a derpy looking pet for comedic relief. To each their own.
