​@@Matshiro I joined just prior to Ascension and Act 4, but the skills and sockets was the least of my problems. First, the issue was the skilltree, specifically finding the balance between survivability and damage. Second, "damage on Tuesdays". I forgot who said it but it was very well put together regarding all the conditions for damage to apply, like: Maim on hit, more damage against Maimed targets, increased chance to Bleed Maimed enemies, more damage against Bleeding targets, Leech from Bleeding targets, more damage when Leeching... I hope they contain that cancer in PoE2!

Agreed, people will finally be able to actually fully see the 2D art hidden under the sockets. Also - that feeling when you can just equip a dropped item without worrying about socktes and bricking your build - I bet it will be priceless.

I've seen it explained as gear having one or two sockets depending on the peice, but the links are tied to the actual skill itself rather than the gear. Body armour can have two sockets so potentially two 6links on one body armour, could be wrong though.

@@sivadirective9060 That was an older build of the game, irrc. Currently there's a skills menu you socket the gems into. Sockets on gear are for 'stat runes' you can equip to the item to fill a stat void you're needing filled.

They could have it be a specific item your character is said to wear to channel gems instead of their equipment as a whole. Except for the Gemling Legionaire ascension for Merc, that guy's obviously doing some surgery.

Hey Tri, this reminds me of another potentially huge help I saw in the reveal stream. On the passive tree, below the option to "inspect" a node, which I assume breaks down what the node does for your build, it looks like they went a step further and added a "compare" option as well. Seems obvious what it will do but it's pretty cool! Maybe in your interview you can ask Jonathan about that and about other QoL we haven't yet seen. Cheers!

100% agree, that was so painful for me when I started poe 10 years ago and to this day it can be so annoying "hey nice item, ok lets play tetris for 10 minutes" later it almost doesn't matter so its a pure early game inconvenience.

Yeah first character I built just got bricked just trying to get a fully linked chest piece. Never got it before I ran out of currency or after I got a bunch more. Couldn't even get the same broken pattern back. So I just made a new character.

Oh I didn’t know this. Well that’s actually a really good thing, I played PoE but not much and yes, the thing about gems and gear is really annoying and you easily loose track on what you are using and actually that made me quit the game after some 40 hours. This is nice

As an outside observer, if I may, the interaction between politicians often seems ridiculous and childish. 1:07:00 thank u for saying this. D4 was my first ARPG. And while it’s not the best experience post-campaign, it’s still a fun and chill time for what it is. I am however looking forward to taking my (former) Destiny 2 hardcore addiction and replanting that into POE 2. I think both game can coexist and all the negativity around D4 in the POE community is very off putting to me, and honestly very toxic

Apparently in POE1 they made it easier already. In POE2 it costs 'gold', which is a currency only used for vendor buying and respeccing.

I'd argue the swapping items is still somewhat of an issue with most attack skills being weapon locked.

Well, they can't just spoon feed everything to the player. Gotta leave some things for us to figure out, but I am sure if that proves to be troublesome in the future, they will fix it.

@AlqantDBlank yeah I'm not saying it needs changing, but I'm pretty sure you'll often get times where you get what would be a great upgrade but it's an axe instead of a quarterstaff. It will be more of a "why can't I attack?" "D'oh it's not a sword it's an axe"

​​​@@satibel but they did this so we can have weapon identity. In poe1 there is no difference if you play with mace, sword or axe, gameplay will be the same. Considering everything i think that this is a good change.

@@misinnio yeah I think that's more of a ui issue than something that needs fixing, Like blink the skill in red or show a warning next to the weapon or the skill button that you have disabled skills.

The nice thing is that now we have the Weapon Swap system. So we can use 2 different weapons and gems associated with those weapons . And that will be "automated"

The gem system is why I never got into POE1. Seemed like the entire goal was to gem around 1 ability and spam it through the entire game. After 30 levels of fireball I gave up.

If that was the biggest no-no Trust me, the game will slaughter casuals. Make a pool check if they are afraid. No more brutal 6 portals for certain encounters require players to be skilled or geared enough. Trust me, they are still afraid.

That means taking out one of the "chase" mechanics of the game, right? And rendering all other items useless. I'm still relatively new in POE1, and I feel that feeling of "chase" - when I get a new item, I really inspect all its affixes and test if it goes well with my overall stats.

Okay, but is this loss worth it? I'd argue it is. Having to farm up currency and especially burn time rerolling sockets and colors and links on a potential upgrade item is basically the definition of 'busywork' to be removed. The affixes are still there, so the chase for a fully maxed out item with the right affixes remains. It's just now when an upgrade drops, you can actually use it immediately instead of having some unknown pile of busywork before you can get back to fighting.

i prefer the poe1 item sockets system, not a fan of this change. even when i was a new player learning the game, i never had issues with understanding it at all. to call it confusing and jarring seems a bit of an overstatement.

Yeah but wouldn't it make it kinda boring? I mean this was a big part of a game - first you don't care about sockets, then you start caring about sockets more than about stats, and finally you have to combine both sockets and stats to make a perfect gear. You had to think and make choices, - are the sockets the right colors? Is a link worth more than a stat? Do you have enough resources to make the links on the item which has good stats? etc. And now it seems that any gear with higher stats will be an upgrade which makes it kinda less meaningful.

This has long been my biggest gripe with PoE in tandem with the passive tree: The game does not allow you experiment on the fly. If you brick you're build and end up with a Zdps build, you can't simply respec (because no one bloody responds to trade requests for orbs of regret), you have to build a whole new character, slog through campaign again, and hope you don't brick again. Yes you can follow a build guide, but what if I want to do something off-meta or just dick around and see what works? PoE doesn't allow me to do that.

Gem system for the second game sure looks interesting, let's not jump into conclusions that it's better or any less complex. Besides, I was a new player once and I was confused too. Then I did my research and learned the system. It made me proud, felt like I earned it. This is one of the core attractions of the game. It's one of the things that make it unique. What's next? Let's use gold for trades instead of orbs because it's confusing to new players. Let's make passive tree linear, it would be less confusing. That atlass tree looks awefully complicated, bring the ax!

This could be ok. Personally my favorite part of ARGPs is the math and puzzle type problem solving it takes to get the best build. People playing casually should be able to get through the campaign without feeling like they need an online calculator but don’t lower the overall ceiling. As long as this still allows for late game head splitting build mechanics to figure out I’m down for it. Make things fun for people who play 3 hours a week and hard enough to figure out and master for those that want to play 12+ hours a week. People who play casually shouldn’t complain that there is a mechanic that is hard to figure out as long as there is plenty of easier content for them to explore. I say all this because this change gives me the vibes of lessening the overall potential complexity of a system that allowed for many options but enough restrictions to force choices. The issue of not being able to see your gear behind the giant gems or other socketables could have been solved other ways. If magical gems imbuing your gear with new stats or abilities are socketing into your gear, then why are we calling them gems and where are they being socketed? Into the character’s body or just being held in their pocket? It seems not thought out or just simplified for the sake of making things easier for more people to figure out with less time investment, but I’m sure I’m missing something and looking forward to finding out when the game is out!!

You still have sockets and up to 6-links, they're just not in the gear anymore but on your character, sort of like a separate equipment screen. So you still get highly varied and modifiable skills.
