Since about 2013 or so I've kept my ear to the ground on shoryuken threads and Twitter and the like, trying to figure out what specifically causes people to give up in a fighting game. Whenever I see a common thread I try to make a video that's like, "here's how you deal with that thing" and that's how I grew my KZbin channel. A very common situation I see is someone who WANTS TO PLAY Akuma or juri or someone, but was told they're bad for beginners. That person plays Ryu for a bit, doesn't have fun, ditches the game. The thing most beginners don't realize is that the single most important thing in fighting games is their own morale. If you play juri for 100 hours because you like her, you're gonna end up a better player than a guy who plays Ryu for 20 hours then abandons the game because he doesn't like ryu, even though Ryu is "better for beginners." And not only will the guy who played juri because he was passionate about her be the better player in the end, he'll have had more fun for the journey. The vast majority of pros themselves are passion players who play characters they like, and sfv is balanced enough anyway that you can win with basically anyone up into the absolute top level of play. Obviously the main objective of a video game is to have a good time, so if you're not having a good time you have to reevaluate how you can. There's no sense in trying to become the best player ever if it's in a game you don't even enjoy playing. Most of us aren't ever going to get to pro level, and actually even if you do you might not even like tournament play. Personally I've always found tournaments to be really stressful while I just like the philosophy of the game, so I've never seriously tried to compete in any sf title. Not disagreeing with anything in your video. Just posting some thoughts and observations I've had over the years. One last thought, I think someone who plays Akuma for 100 hours will end up a better Akuma player than someone who plays Ryu for 50 then Akuma for 50, though I do confess I think the two players may end up with different Akuma playstyles. I think if you want to get good with X character, it makes no sense to play Y character when you could be playing X character.

Regarding the 50 Ryu and 50 Akuma analogy, both characters are shotos and have similar inputs and general strategy. I think a player who spends 50 on a grappler, and then 50 on a zoner would be the better player because they get to experience the pros and cons across the archetype first hand.

I don't get this obsession with "the right character for a new player" to be honest. Take it from someone whose first character in GG+R was Venom, you don't need to be able to use a character to their full potential to still have a good time with them. Are you going to lose? Sure! Welcome to fighting games, you must be new here. You're going to lose no matter which character you pick, but eventually with enough games between you getting better and the matchmaking having a better understanding of where you belong you'll eventually hit that sweet spot of winning about as much as you lose... but instead of playing a character you don't like who is good for new players you're playing a character you do like and actually want to get better with. That being said if it's taking too long for you to really get "the sauce" of the character you like and you're feeling like you're beating your head against the wall... absolutely try someone else. Don't let character loyalty sap the fun out of the game for you. Sometimes a character you love just doesn't love you back, and you have to let them go for the less attractive but more accessible character.

I think what people are looking for when they ask for a character they can play as a newbie, is a character that doesn't take long before you can start doing cool shit with them. Saying "Choose the character you like the most" or something similar means absolutely nothing to a new player. They don't have a connection to any character yet, and they're more interested in a character's playstyle than their spot on tier lists. They don't know enough about the game to choose their favourite character. I ended up choosing Karin because I enjoy a footsies based approach to fighting games, but none of the people who said "Pick who you think looks the coolest" or "Pick your favourite character" contributed to that decision in any way. What did help is when I asked on reddit which characters have that playstyle, and I was given a small list of characters that fit that description. Tried them all out for a few hours each, and settled on Karin. If I didn't do that, I'd have had to spend countless hours in training mode just figuring out each character's moves and basic combos before deciding who was my favourite. So yeah, I'm pretty opposed to the "Pick your favourite" advice that is often given in fighting games.

I think when people say "tier lists don't matter till high level" they misunderstand the value of tier lists at lower levels. Tier lists are useful tools for learning how high level players view the game, and the strengths and weaknesses of characters. Inexperienced players may sometimes put too much stock in it, but they still help to build fundamentals

That and her specials are unsafe, and instant divekick takes a lot of practice to do consistently and hit confirm off of. Beginners loooooove using special moves. We all did it starting out. Doing lots of arrows and random DP's are just a bad idea as they are asking to be punished. Random sumo headbutts on the other hand... work much better against newer opponents who don't know how to do it. Not to mention Honda can take more hits and win a war of attrition.
@theWIIISEguy
@theWIIISEguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@InfiniteTranscendence Exactly. Basically people have always hated on Cammy and her players cause she's so effective. We know she's good. But there's always someone overreacting about how mid-level players take advantage of her strengths and have no skill or knowledge. However, very rarely does someone point out that she's not an easy, brain dead character to just hop on and play to beat more skilled opponents. Less if more and Cammy players know that or come come realize it after enough Ls. If a Cammy is washing you, chances are they know what they're doing.. At least enough enough beat you. She's got plenty of holes in her game and she's can be just bad when you make one too many mistakes or lose a life lead.
@InfiniteTranscendence
@InfiniteTranscendence 3 жыл бұрын
@@theWIIISEguy Another thing to mention is even her great things like her cr mk confirms are difficult to so and take a lot of practice due to the tight window to do them. In a game, some characters just attract more flak than others while others tend to be overlooked or excused. It's also based on popular trends and what people read in articles and see. No character is perfect and all of them have something to offer. Cammy isn't unbeatable and even loses to Menat, Talked, and Abigail who aren't top tier. It's more than simple tier strength. It's about looking at all the tools and learning the matchups. I think this list shows that people should just enjoy the game and play as who they like. The players who are complaining about her are probably not at the level she is the most dangerous at. It just comes down to labbing certain things.

I still find tier lists fun to go over all the time, Honda is a great example of knowledge check with frame data, noob players will assume a long pokey punch or kick, when something like 5K into DP is what satisfies the condition statement, noob players won't do that As the lists get higher, we see mechanic disparity fall, like Karin, Cammy, Juri Even looking at these lists tell stories, Akuma is low cause online lag and volatile stun is what ends him, so he suffers more than optimally when not under online conditions

Abimagail is the one character i'd give my vote for. Big buttons, big damage, easy combos, decent anti-air, has command grabs to open up blocking (although a normal one got nerfed way too hard for no reason), highest vitality, pretty much nobody up to like platinum cannot deal with run to grab cancels, and if they are smart enough to start jumping, you punch them to the face instead. Has a parry for that honda buttslam too. And as an added bonus, he absolutely dwarfs and trashes all those pesky gief players who think they are better than you. Top tier beginner character.

Started playing a few days ago, and as I’m not a complete newcomer to fighting games (Mortal Kombat really and even then I was god awful) this game hasn’t been the most forgiving to me. Picked Rashid to go with as well as Ken too and as much as I love their style… I still suck , however I am getting the hang of taking my time with the game. Won my first match today as well. So I’ll take this advice lol, but losing something like 15 games in a row because of lack of knowledge drains a guy. Here’s hoping I get a character under my belt properly soon

@GigaHands
@GigaHands 3 жыл бұрын
Low sample size means those matchups either literally have no data for them, or happen so rarely that Dan always losing is likely enough to actually happen. I'd say the Diamond-Warlord data set is more representative of character viability at high levels for this reason, even though it's still imperfect. Also after looking at the Grandmaster-Warlord data, apparently Juri-Zangief is a 9-1 matchup. I don't believe that for a second and blame the low sample size yielding a lopsided result by chance.

Honestly I feel like you gotta pick whoever makes the game the most fun for you cause that always increased the lifespan of a fighting game for me. I started with Cammy cause of her rep as a good starter character but I switched to Karin later and had WAY more fun playing as her. I also felt like it instilled better fundamentals since I had to get in close on the ground with Karin whereas with Cammy I'd fall back on divekicks or hooligan mixups too frequently.

It's true Honda is notoriously difficult to deal with at bottom ranks. You have to specifically train to recognise if he's using medium or hard headbutt. Depending on your character there maybe little that can be done. And you have to be stand blocking to reduce the pushback to punish properly most times. This is just from one special. He also has sumo splash from the air that can also cross-up, so your AA has to be on point. Even after these two, he can pressure with hands that are plus on block. Then he even has a command grab lol. How do you expect any rookie-silver to deal with all this. Anyone who can deal with it is already not a silver player.

I just have character adhd. So finding a character is only a matter of time for me. I do trails then practice for at most an hour an then online. Not seeing how many times i win pre say but seeing how it feels to play that character. Like with sf4 Juri i had a lower win rate then with gief but i had no less fun. But staying on a character long enough to get to higher ranks was just tough for me.

I think Cammy is the easiest at the highest/medium level of play, she's obviously ridiculously easy but she's not a rookie friendly character you have to practice hit confirms with Cammy because all her moves are super unsafe and rookie players can't just throw them out, you also have to learn instant dive kicks which aren't beginner friendly and Cammy isn't a character that also robs you either which helps in beginner rankings
@InfiniteTranscendence
@InfiniteTranscendence 3 жыл бұрын
Even at medium level of play it's still a struggle. At highest she truly shines. At the highest level of play I think the characters come into their truest potential. Doing things like instant divekick, and then hiconfirming it as well as cr mk (which pros mess up) isn't easy. However her game plan is straightforward which is a pro and a con. If an opponent can't condition their opponent then they won't open their opponent up. However you can get a lot of mileage off of her with basic fundamentals. It's much easier to use safe special moves and 50/50 guesses at lower levels. Mastering neutral, shimmies, frame traps, and opponent conditioning is a esoteric concept to most and that's why they find fighters hard. They just want to do flashy combos.

@ssbm_sin

@@Brian_F It's fair to say it's a bit more correlation than in fighting games, but for league specifically the top "online warriors" if at all scouted usually are just brought onto academy teams rather than actual LCS teams, where they stay for a good amount of time, a majority of whom don't even get to see LCS stage time. Most of the "new" talent for league (in NA at least) is just imports funneled in from the regions that actually have good ping for soloq, while in NA even if you're grinding and hit rank 1 you're not anymore likely to have gotten picked up by a team than someone who got into a scrim block and preformed well.
@wwzzz-
@wwzzz- 3 жыл бұрын
@@ssbm_sin it is different for NA but brian is correct for regions like korea. in korea once you get to above 500lp challenger you reach the area where you start playing with korean pros. the mentality behind soloq is completely different from sfv, in korea soloq is basically a training ground to practice in for most pro players. so if you get to say 1000lp and are frequently matching vs pros, its safe to say you are playing somewhat close to the pro level. granted league is a team game and soloq doesnt have the same aspect to it as playing in 5s but it is certainly a lot closer than top sfv ranked compared with sfv tournament play.

@@Brian_F solo que is also a bit of a joke in league, at least for NA. Even the higher rated players have their own complaints over the years. And the meta in solo que, even in high ranks, is vastly different from competitive play.

I honestly think that even if the netcode for fighting games reaches the point of being indistinguishable from offline the community will still shit on it for being "online"
@jdrmanmusiqking
@jdrmanmusiqking 3 жыл бұрын
Literally impossible for online to match the offline experience. Even the best Rollback netcode is objectively worse than playing with minimal offline delay. People who say this somehow forget that native delay doesnt just go away because the netcode is *nearly* flawless. Even if online somehow consistently only has 1 frame of delay (impossible but lets assume), then that 1 frame is stil added to the already native delay for your console/PC.
@Dokainin
@Dokainin 3 жыл бұрын
@@jdrmanmusiqking you can actually almost entirely get rid of the native input delay on PC just by disabling V-sync. so in DBFZ for example 3 frame delay online on pc basically feels the same as offline on ps4/5 as long as the connection is stable. optimal fighting game performance is on PC because consoles get worse every gen in regards to the native input delay. PS5 is like a third to half a frame worse than ps4

This is because playing offline is different to playing online even disregarding netcode. Many eSports have seen big upsets in the covid era because of things being forced online.
@Dokainin
@Dokainin 3 жыл бұрын
@@dippythehippy Hypothetically if you were on pc and the netcode was consistent and indistinguishable from offline, then the only actual difference between them is the nerves that come from the live competition aspect vs the comfort of being in your own home. And my comment wasn't actually in regards to competing, but in regards to the fact that you can have online warriors who can consistently beat top pros but get no respect because they play online. Other esports like Brian said arn't like this and they actually view highly ranked players as potential recruits for teams. that is something that will never happen in the FGC because of how stagnant the perception of online is regardless of how much the experience improves.
@dippythehippy
@dippythehippy 3 жыл бұрын
@@Dokainin it's not just a nerves Vs comfort thing. Playing online is a entirely different experience to playing in person. I also think that other eSports are like this. When it comes to LoL, it really depends on the server. If you get into NA and China servers, most Challengers are one tricks, and the games are low quality fiestas, there's nothing to do with pro play at all. If you go to Korea and EUW servers, then you have legit pro players in Challenger. The main problem with League is that there's no voice comms, it's equivalent to the lack of a good netcode in fighting games.

Can confirm. A match against E. Honda in high Silver ranks (either Super or Ultra, don't remember) is what made me quit the game. Just a knowledge check of what to do against hand slap, butt slam, looped over and over again as a frame trap. Characters like that are super effective at low ranks. There was a Cammy player I followed because he literally only did two moves over and over again, and I loved watching how effective it was in replays. I don't think he ever made it to Gold, but I admired that he never changed up his strategy.

akuma low tier confirmed. I purposefully chose akuma as my first sf character, not only cuz I think he's sick design-wise, but he has the shoto base with a lottle spice. The argument is the "beginner character argument" inverted. I tend to play grounded, reactive footsies. Akooms definitely isn't the best at that. He's solid, but has somewhat stubby normals. If you fuck up a hitconfirm, you get shredded. Akuma is a paper tiger. Your errors hurt. The punishes are really hard and he has the toolkit to dabble in many styles, while being meh at most of them. Don't get me wrong, played to his potential, I think he's still the best character in the game. But I use him as a teaching tool first and foremost.

Akuma’s standing medium kick got nerfed but it’s still fantastic. Used to be arguably the strongest whiff punishing tool in the game. He has a hit confirmable low forward, a fireball that knocks down meterless, and a crush counter that’s plus on block. If anything he’ll make you think your footsies are significantly better than they actually are.
@ddublu
@ddublu 3 жыл бұрын
@@KidOmegaO5 agreeing with the first parts wholeheartedly. He has VERY good tools, yes. But there are many characters that play any of the facets of gameplay you have alluded to better, i.e. have better fireballs or pokes etc. What makes him so strong is his unparalleled ability to switch playstyles. Facing opponents with really strong grounded footsies e.g. chun, karen, you CAN switch into keepaway-fireballs and mix in a variety of air approaches where you retain the upper hand. You could also try to play their game. It will be an uphill battle because you forego your strongest asset: flexibility, but it is a strong teaching tool.
