Just don’t totally trust the metrics it produces. They tend to be pretty erratic/unreliable (which is why I didn’t tout them as a major feature).

For me the best is LED version, so I can see wheter my batteries already full or not from distance. While LCD version needs me to see the screen to know if it's fully charged

The small LCD version will cycle the lights. For mine, I just have over to see if it's still flashing slowly. All of the lights are solid once fully charged.

nice video, i want to point some fact about Nitecore charger i read the spec sheet and i own it, so if you put only a battery in charger it will charge it faster, quote: QC Mode: 1200mA*1(MAX), 800mA*2 (MAX)

My A7III came with a little charger with usb port on one end and mains port on the other, so plug mains in one side and usb C in the other to the camera, really small use it for travelling. For home I took your advice from a previous video and bought your "Old faithful" it sits on my desk and just gets used, and used, and used... Thnx for another great video !

I almost never charge the battery inside the camera. It just takes Forever. Didn’t even time it, but I’m pretty sure it’s in excess of 6 hours for a full charge. And I always like to have at least two batteries on me, if not for the length of the shoot, then just for redundancy, so chargers with 2 slots are a must 👌🏻

@@WesPerry Yeah, never really thought about the time involved in camera, as I say, I use it when on holiday etc, so just plug it in, go to sleep, wake up next morning (always find that a bonus) good to go.

Also, after my lightning strike debacle, I consider anything that’s presently plugged into the wall in any way to be potentially fried. So my cameras are never attached to a wall, and my drives/disks are only done so one at a time.

Norman Pimlott as I discovered in that video, regular surge protectors do absolutely nothing in the case of a lightning strike, and very special (and somewhat expensive) hardware has to be wired right into the electrical entrance if you want any chance of stopping lightning (and even then it’s definitely not 100%).

I've used same AC powered LCD charger since still using FW50 too.. because, i also like to know more of the battery level instead just single LED. Same story goes when i switch to Z batteries. but, for travel, i use the Wasabi dual charger (similar with the Newmowa) due to size, and i usually charge it overnight, so 4 hours charging time doesn't really matter. and Z batteries are so good, that i find hard time to finish the whole battery in a day in my travel photography

I didn’t measure the time, but I did measure the charge draw, and it’s only 6.6% less (14W vs 15W). So overall it would likely only be about 3-5 minutes longer. Very small difference.

Usb quick chargers use negotiated voltages. If the device only wants 5V, it’ll only provide 5V. That being said, the Dash Charger uses a non-standard implementation, so I wouldn’t be 100% sure if it not doing something tricky. Only about 99% sure.

Some say that using a third party charger with no center pin may affect battery life, but I’ve seen no evidence of this (could be true, though). But fast charging will Definitely impact battery life over time. Which is why my current favorite is the ISDT NP2 Air, as it has the third pin, and you can choose slow or fast charging.

@@WesPerry When you factor in what comes in the box, the package isn't that expensive even when purchased new. As a bonus, the main unit works as a multi-battery power supply via a W/Z dummy battery, powering the camera for long outdoor shooting. It also allows you to swap out flat batteries on-the-fly. UK had them listed for £380.00. Individual batteries sell for £80~110 each, price vary between authorized and 3rd party dealers.

Wes another great video, so I have a Watson charger that is like your AC dual charger but my Watson only has 2 prongs not all three, (which is the middle one) what does that middle prong do, am I missing out on anything?

The third prong is only for carrying data from the chip inside the battery to the camera. For a charger it’s not really necessary. In theory the battery chip could be decoded by the charger and show a super precise charge level (% like the camera does), but no one does this.

If you plugged a battery into the camera that only had the two prongs (which some super cheap aftermarket batteries do), the camera would show an error, and warn you that the battery is not to be trusted.

Great VDO but you should have cleared the amp of the chargers, mine don't take 2 hrs to charge 2 batteries. AC chargers are not for travelers in my opinion and with 2 Amp and above can charge batteries pretty fast coz those USB chargers are dumb and they depends on the charger AMP to charge the batteries. Well I may be wrong but should have tried with different chargers like quick charge. Great Effort BTW and keep up.

I measured amperage And wattage in my tests, but only talked about wattage in the video, as only one is really needed, and when one of them is powered from 120Vac, and another 8.4V quick charge, current isn’t a good metric to use, but wattage equalizes the results, as it accounts for both current And voltage. And I agree the AC charger isn’t that great for travel. I did say it was too big for that, and that the smaller USB chargers were a better idea.

Additionally, I used a 2.4A/12W charger in my tests (iPad Pro 2nd gen) to see how much current each would draw at the standard usb 5V output. Only one (Nitecore) drew all 12W/2.4A, and that’s only with two batteries installed. The rest limited themselves to 10W/2A regardles. Similarly, the rest would only reach their max draw with two batteries installed, and even then the RAVPower only drew 1.8A/8W. Wouldn’t even take all it was given.

Hey. I have a Nitecore USN4 Pro like yours. I couldn't get it to quickcharge, but after looking at your video I bought the same adapter you did. I hooked it up and it's still not quickcharging and is only charging one battery at a time. What's going on? Is it because I'm using the cable that came with the charger?

That’s odd. It won’t quickcharge when on a Normal charger, and just do one at a time. You’re sure it’s exactly the same one as mine? I assume you’ve tried unplugging and plugging it back in? The cable I’m using is the one that came with it, so that shouldn’t be the problem...

I was using 3rd party batteries for several months now and got the warning and was allowed to continue to use them, but since yesterday with out doing any firmware updates, the camera says I cannot use the battery and then shuts down…? WTF. I should be able to risk breaking my camera or not. But now they are not working at all. Anybody else have this problem…??

Yep. This seems to happen when the third party battery gets older and doesn’t provide sufficient voltage for the cameras to be really sure of it anymore. When the Sony batteries are running a lower voltage, they have a communications and diagnostic chip inside the battery to convey the actual battery charge level and capacity to the camera. The third party batteries have no such information for the camera, so when it can’t easily confirm it’s going to work well, it will give a warning, when it looks like it’s not going to work well at all, it just shuts down to prevent corrupting your memory card in the case of a power failure during a write operation.

There only seems to be one variety sold under a number of different brand names. They’re all pretty slow. I don’t generally use those, though, as it’s difficult to charge multiple batteries at once with them (I’m usually charging 5-8 FZ100 batteries in preparation for a wedding).

I think they all do. They completely shut down and stop drawing current when they feel the charging is complete. They’ll actually remain entirely inert from that point on. Even if the battery were to slowly dip down to a lower voltage after this point, it won’t start up again. It needs to be removed and reattached to resume charging. The Notecore chargers are especially finicky about this and sometimes need to be entirely unplugged and plugged back in before they’ll charge another battery (only sometimes, though). But I guess better safe than sorry?

That being said, each one seems to have a slightly different interpretation for what is fully charged. The Sony charger fills the batteries the fullest, while the dual ac charger in second place, and the others just barely hit 100% before shutting down (when you put the battery in your camera, especially if it’s an older battery, it will quickly dip to 98-99% when in use).

Does this happen with any other lenses? I have to ask if this is adapted, and if your lens/adapter have the latest firmware update installed (as well as the camera). Sony sensors only have vertical phase detect autofocus points, so they're great at detecting vertical lines of differentiation, but not great at horizontal ones, so I've seen this behaviour before, although it's not entirely obvious why it would be happening in this case...usually you can tell that the subject has an obvious orientation that it would prefer when this happens, and then it falls back to contrast detect autofocus (the big box instead of the "dancing ants", as some call them, for phase detect AF).

@@WesPerry thanks for checking Wes! So I checked with other lenses and it did the same thing. Then I checked if it has to do something with putting the camera in portrait mode and then I found out that you can change the focus area solely for portrait mode. And here it was set to center focus. Apparently once you put your camera in portrait mode you can change the focus area for portrait mode only. Didn't know that at all!

3a and what voltage? It requires the 9V output by Quickcharge chargers to be able to charge two batteries at once.

Looks pretty good, and an obvious better choice if you have multiple battery types on hand to charge. Appears to charge at the same rate as the Sony and Nitecore chargers. I haven’t tested it, though, so can’t necessarily recommend it ;)

Yep! I'll actually be releasing a video about that charger soon ;) You just need one that's rate for Quick Charge. USB-PD or Power Delivery does nothing for this charger. Super annoying that those are two entirely different and incompatible standards.
