Edit: I had a titans clash(similar to endsieg) game go till 1975 before I could no longer kill more Chinese a month than I could reinforce. About 400 million Allied Casualties to my 80million. China had the only army left but I was still trapped in Germany.

The reason the guy in the lobby said that is to do with how Paradox games used to work many years ago. Games like HoI3 and Victoria 2 came out at a time when multi-core cpus were still emerging and not every developer knew how to work with them, so those earlier games only utilized one core of your cpu. Even EU4 when it first came out for a couple of years had this problem. Hoi4 has never had that be a thing though. Your cpu is definitely important.

Even games that are lower core heavy (CSGO for example has a lot of trouble utilizing more than 8 cores properly, atleast it did few years back) can still make use of the extra cores AMD (for example) provides so that arfument is useless anyways.

Neither Lennard nor you were wrong about CPU. CPU matters the most *precisely* because it only really uses one core - the better CPU, the better that one core can run the game (higher clock speeds). Games where CPU doesn't matter as much usually have multithreading (spreading work over whole CPU, so even weaker CPUs can do it)

Single core performance is the only metric that matters for hoi, unfortunately "better" CPU often is considered "better" due to having more cores not necessarily faster cores. It's a nuanced argument that shouldn't be bolded down to get better cpu.

However, it's very difficult to compare CPU's because GHz is not that great of a metric - 4GHz cpu from 10 years ago will do significantly worse than modern 4GHz cpu. That is because different CPU manufacturers (AMD, Intel, Apple, Arm) use different instruction sets, which vary even across generations and models. It is, indeed, a very complicated topic

3:53 The CPU matters the most but only the single core performance (you can check this by having the task manager open while you are playing). So if you are buying a new PC to play HOI4 you dont need a 10-12 core CPU like Ryzen 9 or i9 you are looking for fast cores only not a lot of cores you are good with an i3 or i5. But how old the CPU is will matter a lot because old cores will be significantly slower than newer ones. Also laptop cores are usually slower laptop.

The game puts %90 of it's load on one core but that doesn't mean you are not going to feel the difference if you use 2 cores 2 thread CPU because i think there are some instructions prioritisation chaos if you have low threads. 4 core 8 thread is the sweetspot for this game. More than that is fine but big diminishing returns. (In MP) Extra investment should focus on newer generations of CPUs that has higher clock speeds and better IPC.

Okay, Single Core Performance is most important but different CPU's have different single core performance whereas for the gpu, producing 60 fps is fucking useless. you can have a super cpu run through 10 years in a hour and a crap gpu running the game at 15 fps the whole time. Also the game does use multiple threads so extra cores are useful its just that all threads arent created equal so one of them is gonna be the bottle neck. This is almost always true for modern games.
