Pretty sure Tom Cruise wasn't in Rumblefish. Might be thinking of Matt Dillon? Cruise arguably had his breakout role in the '81 movie Taps. The year Rumblefish was out, Cruise had Risky Business, The Outsiders (the '83 movie Diane Lane WAS in with Cruise) and All the Right moves.

She looks nothing, as an older woman, like she did when younger. Her maturity as a woman and actor has enhanced her abilities IMO. I think her calmness and groundedness has markedly improved her acting ability, especially in scenes with little or no dialogue. She has learned how to convey emotional depth more authentically, which is perhaps expected from mature actors, but eye-opening in her case: Infidelity comes to mind most especially. She has become an adult actor, rather than the superficially glamorous celebrity she once was. That is a huge achievement in tinsel town!
