I own a Yoder YS640S Pellet Smoker with built-in Fireboard control AND a Fireboard 1 standalone unit. For me, the Fireboard Spark is an excellent tool that integrates seamlessly with my other units and the Fireboard app to give me complete temperature coverage. It would be great as a standalone, but is EXCELLENT as part of the Fireboard system!

all i want, is a meat thermometer that DOESNT fall apart after only 5 uses! every thermometer ive had breaks so fast no matter how gentle and careful i am cleaning and storing, i need something made out of titanium haha
@TheBarbecueLab10 ай бұрын
I’ve only had one thermometer break on me in 5 years of testing, and that was when I was cleaning it. I was cleaning the probe, and the metal probe just pulled right off the end. I sent it back postage prepaid to the manufacturer and they fixed it. Although, if there was a titanium instant read, I’d love to test that.

Thanks so much for this great video and tests, really appreciate it. I'm going with the Thermopen ONE.
@R0NxBURGUNDY2 жыл бұрын
I think to justify the Spark you’d need to really want the leave-in probe. I use it frequently to just make sure my pellet grill is getting the right temps on long cooks. Great video, and I get why you did it the way you did, but the spark is so much more than an instant read that it’s hard to classify it as just that. The phone app is incredible and the interconnectivity to a main Fireboard unit make it an amazing piece of tech.

I have a thermapen one and had a thermapen MK4, an excellent thermometer I upgraded due to the 3 second read time to 1 second excellent thermometer. Also, thermoworks is always running sales on them. Just subscribe to their website they will alert you on their sales. The Fireboard is nice as well. The magnet and type c changing and lithium battery is nice as well. Fireboard is also a great temperature controller. Also, I subscribe and thank you for great review it was needed.

Interesting and entertaining segment. I enjoyed your multi-test method vs just testing in boiling water or ice bath. I think your tests really demonstrates that all the probes in the test were accurate and would need the needs of 99.999% of people shopping for a digital instant read thermometer - the cheapest is 100% fine. No one watching these blogs cooks anything where a 0.5F or 1F variation or 1 .7 seconds vs. 2 seconds makes one biit of a difference. Where differences come in maybe the feature differences such as lefty vs righty or needing to attach a probe etc. Great segment. Thanks.

I’ve been eyeing the magnetic silicone sleeve for my Thermapen One to help with that category.
@TheBarbecueLab2 жыл бұрын
I haven't played with the magnetic sleeve yet, but I do love the idea of being able to stick it to the side of the grill...
@spydergkh6337 Жыл бұрын
Love the glow in the dark magnetic sleeve!! Keeps my Thermapen handy inside on the fridge for indoor use, and I attach it to one of my other Weber's when smoking on my WSM!! Handy! But; I never attach it to the dome of the Weber that I'm currently cooking on! Lol!
@engineerncook61384 ай бұрын
I have the silicone sleeve for the Thermapen ONE but the magnet got weak, perhaps it got too hot, I had been stored it close to my range on the vent hood. I replaced the magnet with one from Amazon. I like protection the sleeve give from dropping and it is easier to grip than the smooth plastic body.

No rechargeable for me either, Internal, non-replaceable Li-ion batteries will eventually die in 5-10 years. I used my Classic Thermapen for 10 year by replacing coin batteries twice. Finally upgrade as the Classic calibration was drifting and the ONE was so much improved.

Suprise suprise, the two most expensive were the top two. Personally I am not into spending $100 for an instant read thermometer and I don't think you could go wrong with any you tested. My Thermapen MK3 is still going strong after a decade and reads within .5C of my new Thermapen One (a gift), though a tiny bit slower. I've had cheaper units die during my ownership of the MK3. My takeaway? It may cost more initially, but it's worth it. Accuracy, longevity, reliability and ease of use make it a better deal than cheaper devices I've tried.
@TheBarbecueLab2 жыл бұрын
I'm with you there James. I had my first instant read thermometer given to me for Christmas or a birthday, but by the next Christmas, it wasn't working well and wasn't reliable. Haven't had my original Thermapen die yet, and it's been years.

I had a thermapen and broke it trying to pry the CR2032 out that the first models used to have. Thermoworks is a scientific company first, grill tool company second. I'm going to get a thermopop to replace it. I like the size.
@engineerncook61384 ай бұрын
Thermowork sells many different thermometers to the food service and food processing industry for food safety and food quality purposes, not just scientific.. I agree that changing the CR2032 can be difficult (how do I get it out? which side goes up?). However, the last two Thermapens (Mk IV and ONE) use a single AAA alkaline battery that is easy to change.

I've only had the TP620 about a week, however I am cooking on the Blackstone nightly. So far I am having mixed results. It does help me make a better steak/chicken, however I find myself watching and waiting for the final temp after inserting the thermometer. The claim is 2-3 seconds, but I believe it is more like 6 or 8. I know, still better than old school analog, however I lose confidence since I can watch it climb until it finally stops 6-8 seconds later, even longer. I do like the large digital reader and it works well until you get that angle where reflection voids it. Seems like an unreasonable complaint on the surface, but when you are trying to position thermometer and holding for 5 or more seconds over a 36" griddle, it can be annoying. I paid $29, so while I think it is par for the course at that price point, the normal price of $50 is not even close. So, while I probably will keep it, I imagine my frustration me to search for a better primary. So, save money where it makes sense; I am not sure this is it...

I'd be curious where the ThermaPen IR would rank within this list, and if you have any cons on the unit. I don't have one but I am considering it. As an all-around the cooking areas unit, I would think it would rank pretty high and maybe higher than the Spark at about the same price. Of course, that is subjective if you needed the probe, but if you are running a griddle that TP IR unit seems super handy.
@engineerncook61384 ай бұрын
Thermapen IR has the specs of the Thermapen Classic, slower, not as accurate and less water resistant (NOT splash proof or waterproof) than the Thermapen One. The IR has a spot ratio of 5:1 (will measure a 1" circle if held 5" away from surface). Most IR guns are 12:1 or 30:1. If you need to measure a 1" spot of something at 650 F (max of that Thermapen), your hand may get very hot. I have stand alone IR guns from Thermoworks and love them. Pizza ovens go to 900 F so the Thermepen IR won't do but it will do fine for flat tops that run between 300 F and 500 F usually.

@lchow-o9xАй бұрын
You know, these thermometers are all great, but they're from two years ago. Nowadays, there are even better performers out there, like the iProbe and Typhur brand thermometers. They've got high-resolution color screens and can measure temps in just a second or less. Plus, they're rechargeable, which is something the older models didn't have. I'd definitely recommend adding these to your comparison list. They're the real deal!
@AshtonnnM8 күн бұрын
IMO, Fireboard thermometer's rechargeable battery is a huge con. I assume it is soldered, thus once that battery is degraded it cannot be replaced without soldering expertise, i.e., out of $150 whereas with the others you just pop in a new $1 battery from your local dollar store.

@spydergkh6337 Жыл бұрын
I used to. I do love my Thermapens. But; I am finished with the Smoke-X & Billows. In the past year or so, a few minutes into a smoke, the main unit's display would would black out, and while not always affect the cook (since I could verify temps on the remote receiver, lately, the fan on channel 4 was affected to where, the temperature setting would set, but then change rendering the Billows inoperable! After sending everything back to Thermoworks for eval, they said nothing was wrong. The batteries in the main unit were dead. That was BS! Receiving everything back the problem not only persisted, it got worse. I'm done with them I'm now seriously the Fireboard products. 👍

Not sure who needs a $100 plus thermometer who is just a home cook. Everyone likes the spark but here in Canada it’s $200. Laughable . There is a thermaworks model that has a 10 year warranty and is IP65 rated plus supposedly one second readout and rotating screen. Here in cdn it’s $80 so much cheaper states side. I’d say anyone wanting a good one just wait till cyber Monday. Mid summer these things are jacked up in price. Get a cheap for now and keep for backup
@carvedwood1953 Жыл бұрын
Thermapen is insane to me. And I cook and smoke a LOT. For the average cook, you shouldn't need a 100 dollar instant read. For the cook that does more, you probably still don't need that because you should likely have a decent leave in probe. Makes no sense to me.
