I made my first knife block recently following the techniques you showed us in this video - it came out really well thank you! It was the perfect solution for storing a couple of knives I had made specifically with oversize handles for my wife who has arthritis in her hands. She can easily access the knives without dealing with tricky saya's or sheaths and I could also space it out to accommodate the bigger handles and so she doesn't bump her hands taking out the knives.

Just a minor tweak, every time you put your knife in the block or take it out, you are dulling the knife, cut the angle on the bottom on the other side of the block so the knives slide in and out on the blunt side of the knife.

Alejandro Cota thanks mate! To be honest I’m not sure what the commonly used angle is. I just picked what looked best for me by tilting the block on the bench. Marked that and cut. I never even checked what the actual angle was.

Omg! I love this. You have combined my love of cooking with wood working. I need a new beautiful block for my new island and expensive knives. This is fantastic. You seem like such a great guy. Thanks for the really nice video and inspiration!!! Oh! Question. Is the food safe mineral oil the only thing you have put on the wood? I’m guessing you have to reapply more of it now and then?
@JNDCreations Жыл бұрын
G’day mate, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Yes food safe oil was all I used on this one. I’ve actually only reapplied it once since building this, just to bring the outside back to life. You could potentially use a different finish on the outside if you wanted, but I wanted to play it safe given my knives are used daily! Thanks for the kind words!

what depth did you rout the slots to?
@JNDCreations4 жыл бұрын
Justin Phillips I used the thickest knife as a depth guide and set the router to that for all the slots. You could change the depth for each blade if you like, but this worked well for me
@HBSuccess4 жыл бұрын
The only problem - no flexibility. The only knife that can go in ea slot is the one it was designed for. You’ll get tired of that. What happens if you want to replace one with one that’s wider longer or thicker? That’s why commercial knife blocks have universal slots milled end to end.
@JNDCreations4 жыл бұрын
Tioga Fretworks i see you’re point, but it’s very fixable for sure. You could cut standard size slots if you liked. I’m a bit ocd like that and would prefer my knives to have an exact spot to go. I can always add another piece of salmon gum to the edges to expand the block for additional knives if needed.
@HBSuccess4 жыл бұрын
JND Creations kewl. Sorry didn’t mean to go negative this was a great project. I should have added that the reason I’m still looking for a new knife block plan (a year later) plan is BC I made the same ‘just for my knives’ block and now half the slots don’t fit thanks to an ever growing knife collection 😂 I might just go the bamboo skewer method this time.
