I have to tell you that is a really great inventive idea. You can always take a scrap of the cut off cardboard and make a 1-1/2” square tube to allow the 16”canvas a place to rest in box front. 6” piece by 12”length, layout on cutting board, lightly score with knife at 1-1/2” . Fold to 12” by 1-1/2”square tube , tape and place in front corner. Will allow 16” portrait to stand.

Very creative and fun use of pizza boxes! I also think you didn't cut off one of the folds, it would work as a lip tp hold the canvas.♥

Yes! I used this exact design to host over a years worth of paint parties, and the boxes totally hold up! Pro tip: go to your local pizzeria and ask for 2 unused boxes ☺️
