I do this weird psychological trick on myself when I think I might buy a new piece of gear that would replace something I already have. I watch reviews (usually favorable) of the stuff I already have to remind me why I got it in the first place. I kind of fall back in love with it. Doesn’t always work but often does.

Just wanna say to all drummers here, invest in hardshell cases for our hardware and your cymbals. It's worth it
@SoundsLikeADrum Жыл бұрын
Everyone is going to have different needs but if you're transporting your gear frequently, appropriate cases are a smart investment for sure. That said, neither of us uses hard cymbal cases with the exception of when flying with cymbals.

@@SoundsLikeADrum what do you use to fly cymbals with?
@jc3drums916 Жыл бұрын
@@HunterG7100 If you don't use a large setup, get a cymbal bag that doesn't hold a lot of cymbals, if you can get away with taking it as carry-on (I've never had any problems, but technically it's a little too big). I have the cheapest Humes & Berg Tuxedo bag, and it works fine. It's designed to hold 4 cymbals in the main compartment, plus the usual hi-hat/splash pocket. When I'm seated, it's standing up between the front of the seat and my calves. If you expect to check your cymbals, bite the bullet and get an ATA case. I suppose a molded plastic cymbal safe would be ok too, but I'd rather just go all out. Cymbals are irreplaceable (unless you play Paiste, heh), so there's no such thing as too much protection IMHO.

I think a lot of people are going for ultralight hardware that fit in a small padded bag. If I didn't have a virgin bass drum and suspended floor tom, I would too. That said, it might still be good to have a trap case to put the entire bag into, along with your throne, rug, stick bag, etc.

I try to purchase most of my gear at a local shop. Yes, I pay little more, but I do get more service and I’m trying to build a relationship with them. And I have several wishlists and when a bargain or sale pops up, I will make my purchase. And I save money especially for the holiday season. This way most of my purchases are rational. I said “most” of my purchases!😉 I’m still a human. 😅

It's also worth noting that often a Drum/Music store will often make more money off of used drums or gear than new.

Season greetings! It’s indeed hard to keep our head on straight during the sales, so much noise! I’m only looking to buy muffling, so tape, moon gel, e rings, big fat snare drum etc, so I should be safe this year. Much worse when you’re wanting more cymbals, the rabbit hole is deep.

I always liked the way the various rings sound, but I thought they were too expensive, so I started making my own from old drumheads. I use a circle cutter (the kind that you use to cut holes for bass drum heads with) and cut out the inside, then use a box cutter to cut the head from the flesh hoop. They sound fantastic, and you can make them for all your drums.

My two favorite pieces of gear are a Pearl 13x3 piccolo and 14" Meinl Byzance Dark hats. The piccolo was $80 used at my local store which is an absolute steal and I've been using it for 18+ years. The hats I had the same store order without me testing. The guy was a little cautious and told me "If you really don't like them we can put them on the stand and hope they sell but we don't really like doing that." When they showed up I fell in love the first time I hit them that was like 10 years ago. Sure, I like trying out new things, but when I'm playing just for me and don't have to adjust to the gig, those are my bread and butter so hopefully I won't have to replace them.

In a "consumerism" society, these tips will apply to ANY purchase, not just drums. LOL!! You have no idea how many small kitchen appliances I've gone through in the last 40 years! LOL!!

Absolutely! In fact, if you take a macro view of quite a few of the things we cover on this channel, there’s application far beyond music.

I've resisted pretty much every faddish gizmo, mainly due to budgetary concerns. I still play--essentially--the Ludwig Hollywood kit that I bought in 1972. As time goes by, it just sounds prettier, anyway, so why bother? I did get extravagant in '78, when I bought the 6", 8", and 10" RotoToms to complement the kit.Still use them, too. But that's it.

Having had the same issues with buyers remorse and being targeted by marketing scams to move product, my story is i have this snare that was thrown in with some gear for free, no name nothing wood shell with an incredibly well made vintage throw off, after sitting around, i decided to use stuff i already had around to make it playable, what a surprise, it sounds unbelievable, def was a highlight and an interesting experience, you dont need more stuff, the basics and good tuning will get you much farther than you think….

I liked the thing that you said about buying something, putting it on your kit, and realizing that it’s not doing anything. I’ve definitely done that a few times now 😅. A great piece of gear that I’ve really enjoyed is the Ludwig Speed King pedal. I’ve played so many pedals and they either feel too cheap or too beefy. The Speed King is perfect for me and has helped me develop my sound and flow on the kit.

No worst feeling than when you sell something to buy what you thought might be better to only find out you screwed up.Its definitely H append to me.Give your new purchase a lot of thought b4 you pull the trigger.Quality gear comes at a hefty price.If there's something you really want,don't settle for something less expensive. Your throwing your money away.

Definitely something to watch out for, I've bought a lot of gear over the years that I didn't really need. Recently, I've really started to appreciate the gear that I do need and use on a regular basis - with one of my favorite Rides, there's a funny story about how I got it. It's a Meinl Byzance Thin Ride, and it's one of the first cymbals that I really enjoyed playing. My former music school used to have one, and every time I played it I just loved the sound. Later, when it came time to buy myself some high-end cymbals, I saw the same model at my local music store - but I unfortunately didn't have the money to buy it. After waiting and saving for a while, I checked again - and of course, the cymbal had been sold. Not only that, but Meinl had also discontinued that specific model, and as far as I know, they haven't made them since. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I thought about buying a similar cymbal instead, but I'm glad I didn't do that, because I ended up getting extremly lucky. About a year later, I was browsing local ads for used drum sales (on a platform similar to craigslist) and lo and behold, I saw the exact cymbal that I had missed out on a year earlier. It was even discounted significantly despite being in mint condition, and the seller lived about 10 minutes from my apartment. I bought the cymbal that same week and have been very happy with it since, it's probably the cymbal I've used the most both live and in the studio.

For a lot of us, I don't think there's need vs. want, it's just all want, but sometimes what is most interesting to us isn't what we will use most of the time. I could use a workhorse snare, like a 14x5 Supra (or something similar but cheaper, lol). But that's a little boring. What do I covet the most? A 12" snare, a flat ride, a swish, and if I had room for it, a bop kit - all situational instruments that would hardly ever get played. 😳

I just bought a black three fold wood stove screen and had a custom made neon sign of my nickname done via China, in blue, and attached that to the middle screen. It sits in front of the bass drum and so far everyone oddly thinks it's cool. I guess I don't have to practice so much any more. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas everyone.

Funny you ask, I have a Slingerland maple snare which I wanted to trade it for my other cymbals but the ex owner insisted that it must be the one I loved, cause he loved his snare. So I traded a custom made 22 Symrna ride that I fell in love. My plan for the next few weeks is to gather some money to remake that cymbal.

Are drumsick bricks still made? That's honestly the only thing I took advantage of with cyber monday sales.
@SoundsLikeADrum Жыл бұрын
Almost all companies sell their drumsticks to retailers in bricks of 6 or 12 pairs. Cost for hickory and maple have gone up significantly lately so being on the lookout for quantity discounts for consumables like drumsticks is definitely a smart move if you know what you want.
