I thin it back alittle myself and I know for a fact that you're correct, I mix my mud up with a drill and whip and add water as necessary to get a workable material. I also have a small mixer for mashed potatoes that I can put on my little drill so if I have to just do alittle bit in my pan I can just mix it in there, I've been painting and drywalling for 22 years professionally and you know exactly what you're talking about from my own experience and from my mentors back then who were pro's. Thank you so much and people are always gonna be know it all's, them are the one's who are pretty much done learning.

Thanks so much for your videos. i had a water leak from a bathroom vent. i had to cut out a 3x2 foot section of my ceiling (including around the light outlet) install furring strips for the new piece of drywall ( i had to have Lowe's cut the 4x8 sheet of drywall in half because it would not fit into my small SUV, haha). i taped the joints with Fiber fuse though i used paper tape for the joint where the ceiling met the wall. At the end of the day it turned out great with the joints flat and even and i just finished painting the ceiling. Could not have done this without your videos. You ARE "The Man!"

I have been enjoying your videos. Years ago, when you open the bucket the water/glue was on top and you had to mix it. These days it is mixed well. I often just mix the top with a 4" knife. It seems that if I mix it with a paddle there more air bubbles in the mud when I itit on the surface. These days I mostly use hot mud. Much quicker finishing.

One thing that I've not seen addressed is the relative humidity issues of job areas. I've been working a job in New Mexico with the humidity hovering in the single digits. The mudding of corners and seams is such a pain because it starts drying before you can even get a tape strip completely set into place. You can't leave a good amount on your hawk to work with because it starts getting dry and crusty on your trowel and hawk almost before you finish one seam. I found myself constantly clearing both after each pass. Sometimes it would dry up enough that the tape wasn't sticking. I played around a lot with different dilution constancies. Had numerous repairs as I went along before priming and texturing.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
When I said I have relatives that do drywall, most of them are in New Mexico so I’ve worked there too and yes it is tougher. In those areas you want to start about 7 AM and finish about 3 PM to avoid the worst of the heat. But mostly you just have to work fast, LOL in case you’re wondering, I have lived in Clovis, Roswell, Albuquerque, Los Lunas and a few other places.

About the only time I don't thin the mud is when I use it straight from the bucket to fill nail & bolt holes. Also when using as a sculpture medium such as around electrical boxes that are cut out way too big. I prefer hot mud for sculptural repairs though. Actually I prefer it for patching holes if I've already got some mixed or I'm patching an entire house full of holes.

Definitely use a little water. Especially when you’re going to keep it for a few days. That way it won’t dry out. Keeps it moist & creamy. No chunks of dry pieces in your mud. 😉

Watching from Ireland have worked in Canada Toronto and Edmonton your videos are spot on👍🏻 unfortunately over here in Ireland we are way behind in terms of taping, our mud selection and variation is really poor, but we are great for diamond coat finishing alot harder on the body tho, love the videos 👌🏻

Lately the buckets of mud I buy has no inner plastic liner and depending on how old it is, you have to add water to be able to work with it. Good advice. Thanks >>>
@thomasmendez28163 жыл бұрын
I change my plastic out as I usually dont use an entire bucket regularly. And as you get farther down in the bucket emptying it the more air in the bucket causing it to dry out and even the stuff on the plastic can start to dry an fall into your mud. For this a trash can liner works fine. just about any plastic film will work. just make sure you get complete contact with the mud right up to the sides of the bucket

Thank you for sharing that video. I'm really grateful for sharing all these years of knowledge with the community and especially DYI people. I'm located in Poland. The drywall mud here is slightly different. Definitely we don't have that nice division for All purpose, 20, 40, 45, 90, etc. You do buy a drywall mud that is usually all purpose with around 60-90 minutes setting time. Of course, you can buy powder mud or mud already mixed with water. However, professionals usually use powdered mud. It's different because it is bonding in some different way than pre-mixed ones (Chemistry was my weakest subject in the school). Powdered mud makes it also easier to work with wet on wet technique, where you don't sand down the coats layer in between of work at all. There is some variety of taping muds, which are stronger and harder to sand down later. They bond well with drywall and give it extra strength at the joint (used for Q1 and Q2). Nevertheless, I do usually put some water in my mud. I'm a trowel guy so thinner mud make it a much easier to work with the mud. The paint roller becomes more popular now, because it's faster technique to apply mud. So a lot of brands give you exact proportion to thin down the mix to right consistency. And definitely you have to do it for putting the drywall muds with machines. What you can find on the label is that you can add water up to between 2% to 5% of mass of your mud. I remember the first time I used premixed mud without doing anything with it. This was horrible. It was hard to properly build the layer on the wall, mud dried too quickly, simply unworkable.
@morokeiboethia67492 жыл бұрын
Dry mud pulls mud thats already set just like paint does after you paint a spot then try to paint it again a few minutes later. It also craters and it doesn't stick with tape as well. Some veteran drywallers prefer dry mud b/c you can stack it a little higher and it might save you a coat in some situations but the 2 worst completed drywall jobs ive ever seen were done by 2 veterans who were both preach dry mud. I know more veterans drywallers that do add water. One guy i know said "if it's like diarrhea, thats too much water. If it's like cookie dough, its too dry. If it's like cool whip, its just right.

I am not sure if you had the opportunity to mix the compound from the dry form. The early stuff was a real workout. Then the manufactureres added vinyl, way easyer. Now this boxed mud slicker than slick. I hear some add liquid soap the mix, I guess they will be at the gym. I still have a couple bags of each in storage from 40 years ago.
