I've gotten a myriad of requests for a dubbing brush video, so here you go!
In this video I discuss the various techniques that I use to make dubbing brushes on the Oasis Benches Dubbing Brush Table. I've made a couple hundred brushes on this table so far and I am beyond pleased with it. Dubbing brushes are used to make flies or segments of flies in an efficient manner.
- I use Master Supply Wire in 28g, 32g, and 34g (lower number, higher thickness), one pair of wire cutters/flush cutters, and a fine wire pet brush-

I bought a 2nd brush maker a couple years ago and asked the seller/maker if it was possible to spin it on both sides. I think he thought that was a weird question. Now here you are with THAT brush maker!! I like to demo making brushes at ff shows. It's more fun when I can have someone from the audience do it (the smaller brushes!). I tie the long fiber brushes for musky and it takes me much longer to spin them out than what I observed here. Excellent brush maker!!!

@@mcfallflies I just watched your excellent video again. Are there any concerns about or tips for removing the table when you are spinning with the longer fibers? That would be my only concern with this design. Thanks!

Nice work, thanks for sharing. I'm spinning up Hareline Magnum Frost-tip Rabbit and Midge Flash, man does it look sexy. The black and orange, & black and fuscia looks sick! Bonus - the leftover leather strip makes for a great leech. Tight lines.

@@mcfallflies If you work with fur and hide (you should), you need to invest in a Pettijean Magic Tool, or Stonfo. Kind of pricey, but makes managing rabbit and finn racoon easier. Tight lines.

I bought the oasis bench few years ago, been using the small spools of wire from the fly shops . Where are you getting the large wire spools ? Love the brushes that the oasis makes ! What sz wires do you like to use depending on materials and type of fly?

That was 28g, which is pretty darn heavy. You could probably use 30g with fair utility as well.

Excellent video. Thank you very much. Question: How do you like the Master Wire Supply wire? I've used UTC wire in the past and have had problems with the wire breaking during spinning. Is the Master Wire Supply prone to breakage?
@mcfallflies
@mcfallflies 2 жыл бұрын
I only use the master wire. All wire breaks when it’s been tightened enough or been bent back and forth (aggressive brushing). Try decreasing the amount of material, brushing softly, or tightening less and see if that helps!

I haven't tied a fly for 10 years, but I still love to see new things and learn. Do you use wire, so they don't fall apart - like making thin pipe cleaners.?
@mcfallflies
@mcfallflies 2 жыл бұрын
Yep! Also so that you can clip it at any point in the brush and it doesn’t unravel!
@CONEHEADDK

@@mcfallflies Cool. And the flies can take more bites without falling apart, I guess - not that any of my flies have lived that hard a life.. By the way, I used to tie with discarded fireline, that I found when fishing, to make them "indestructable". But as time went by, I found less and less of it - a good change created by the "over the hill" enviormentalist focus.

On your bulkhead/predator brushes you said you like a dense core. What material makes it sense? EP fibres?

Could you use EP fibres for the core and craft fur on top? Have you used the Steve Farrar blend for brushes?
@mcfallflies
@mcfallflies 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikestone9415 that could work. The best advice is to try a brush and adjust for what you want more or less of. I’ve used very similar fibers to the SF blend line.

Do you think it makes sense to make long fibers from below, then short, and then long again?
@mcfallflies

I’m not 100% sure what you mean. Could you ask a different way?
@sia2344

@@mcfallflies at 4:40 am you lay down first the white and yellow material (short), then the flash. At 5:10 am, you lay down the long brown material, and so on. Then you twist the material. The result is a brush where the short material protrudes from the outside and the long material remains inside. And if you do the opposite: lay long fibers, then short ones, so that as a result you get a brush, where the short fibers will be inside, like a long support. I don't know how else I can explain it.
@mcfallflies
@mcfallflies 2 жыл бұрын
@@sia2344 I understand what you’re saying now. I’m not sure that it makes a difference once you wrap the brush around the hook. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the way you mentioned though.

Thanks again. I do have a question. What are the factors that have you center the material on the wire vs off setting it to one side before spinning the wire?
@mcfallflies
@mcfallflies 2 жыл бұрын
Personal preference. Half and half makes for a more dense/less wide brush. Offset let’s the brush be more light but allows for a wider brush. Does that make sense?

Nice work. I use lots of natural fibers (temple fox, marble fox, finn racoon, rabbit) which have a natural taper, so they are offset. Midge flash lays down nicely, so I center it.
