Regarding the corkscrew, I recently re-discovered how useful they are for undoing over-tightened knots of string, shoelace, cordage, etc. Especially when kids or pets really screw something up and it's either gotta be unknotted or cut and thrown out, sometimes fast.

Corkscrew is very useful on any SAK with a saw as you can use it to attach the SAK to any large piece of wood to extend its reach. I very rarely used the 3d Phillips on my Fieldmaster, and ended up switching back to a Climber. To me the can opener 2d Phillips is good enough for most jobs.

Great video, I like your mindset on this challenge and look forward to your individual budget video. One thing I would add regarding the Victorinox knives is that even if you set aside their quality, price, toolsets, well-balanced steel, etc, the number one thing they have going for them that no other knife or multitool can match is this: they are a "safe" knife. Doesn't matter if you're at a kid's birthday party, at work, or in the woods, if you pull out a red-handled knife with the Swiss cross on it, everybody recognizes it and knows that it is a "good" knife. This factor alone has me carrying Victorinox offerings 100% of the time and leaving my Spydercos and BRK&T knives at home.

I like these budget-based videos that give options. Thanks! The budget-for-each-item idea would be a cool thing to try, too. Slight edit: the first SAK you show is a Climber, rather than a Camper - the Camper is the corkscrew Hiker, Climber is the corkscrew Super Tinker. Doesn't really matter; I'm just a nerd. Awesome video with some great carry ideas!

I agree. My EDC is put together with the knowledge that stuff falls out of my pockets, sometimes, and is never seen (by me) again. I try not to lose things but just in case that is why you won't see me daily carrying a $200 pocketknife or a $150 flashlight, etc. I don't want junk for EDC but I also don't need pocket jewelry.

I bought those Crescents after seeing them as a cheaper alternative to the Knipex, and I can confidently say they just made the Knipex more expensive. They’re just too sloppy and the head is just too small and squared off. They’re fine for small nuts and such, but I just rarely found them useful day to day.

Same here, I’ve returned 2 of them. The crescents are garbage. Zero quality. Too bad because I like the small size. Save up and get the knipex cobra xs worlds better on quality. I think I saw a channel lock that size too and it wasn’t much better than the crescent. Just bought a Irwin (cobra style) in larger size and I’m impressed, hopefully Irwin makes a tiny version.

I saved my cousins engagement party with my SAK corkscrew. 150 people, lots of wine, no corkscrew. I bought the tiny screwdriver that screws into the corkscrew. I had the one with the Philips head but hardly ever used it so i switched back to the corkscrew model. I've actually used the tree saw several times. It really works well.

Although it's not strictly within the $60 budget, I would also like to recommend one of those magnetic pen-style screwdrivers with the pocket clip. They're super cheap, and you can buy them in packs of anywhere from 5-100, so you don't have to worry about breaking one. I've had one in my pocket for my entire working life and I'm STILL finding new uses for it!

I like the total budget idea, but I’ll always spend more with a little nudge😮 I’m a big fan of the SWA knife with the corkscrew because of it’s amazing ability to open up bound knots in cord. And the scissors, and especially the full thickness Phillips driver that flips out from the bottom, NOT the middle back location. OK, it’s the SWA Explorer knife. The perfect balance of price to utility when it goes on sale for $38 (Amazon today😂) That and the Nite eyze key chain pen - small like the fisher space pen, $7-8 at HD. I also admit to flushing $38 down the drain for the Knipex 4”/100mm water pump pliers, they are nice but the 5”/120mm for less would serve me better …. And of course O light make a rechargeable key chain light for $25. I bought 2 of them, for each car fob/keychain. I’ve said too much…..

Love you videos man. My take on whether you go individual budget tool or package depends on what you’re after. Some of us out there might have most of the elements and will want to round it off with an affordable addition. On the other hand the package will always be more fun and a challenge to put together and for those new to EDC it serves as a great way to get started! Keep up the great work. 👍🏻

for the flashlight, I honestly really like the offerings from Coast at Walmart. My step-mom was wanting a little pen light to keep on hand rather than using her phone all the time. There's a nifty little $10 AAA. It's only 100 lumen on max, but it throws pretty well. Great for finding little things in the dark, or to get to your bigger flashlight if the power goes out. Most importantly, it's small and light enough (pun intended) that she actually carries and uses it on a daily basis. It would definitely be my go to for a super low budget light. Though my absolute favorite is my Olight i5t. This little guy has been through hell and just keeps on ticking.

I just carry individual items collected together of what i already have based on a plan of what i think I'll encounter each day. For instance i don't need a flashlight right now because it's lighter outside. Any pen will work for me, Sharpie is really good. Some small light weight prytool is good enough for opening box tape or popping a zip tie without having to carry a blade. Lighter clothing requires a lighter by weight EDC.

the corkscrew is an underrated tool. It can be used to secure the knife to a pole to make an extended saw. It can be used to loosen knots. Very agreeable! I call those "Mom-pens," because Mom was a teacher who always carried that 4-color Bic. But guess what? Right now our local Dollar Tree has a 3-color knockoff (it loses the green) that also has a phone stylus on the tail end; that's the one I'm carrying. From previous comments I've made, you probably already know I agree with your assessment of the Sofirn SP10 Pro, BUT I prefer the slightly more expensive variant that includes the diffuser. Otherwise, a viable "any AA" flashlight option is the Lumintop Tool AA. It does not tail-stand as well, but includes the diffuser. It has three tailcap variants, one of which is magnetic but that one is a twist-switch.

Interesting video. I wonder if tha Amazon seller is confused on that Victorinox. The picture is the Super Tinker but the ad copy says 'Tinker' which is, of course, a different, less expensive model with fewer tools. Or maybe they aren't confused and it was intentional. I just have a feeling that if someone ordered that they would get a Tinker and not a Super Tinker. Nothing wrong with a Tinker but it isn't a Super Tinker. For pen and paper on a budget (because, let's face it, the pen is getting lost, eventually) Dollar Tree actually sells some decent pens. They also sell (or at least used to - haven't checked in a while) pocket notebooks. So $1.25 plus tax for probably a two pack of decent pens and $1.25 plus tax for a pocket notebook. Tax and all you have pens and a notebook for under $3.

Just $60... welp, my EDC pen was about $80, before I swapped the ink cartridge, so ayy lmao. Personally, I think my $60 EDC would be a Nitecore MT06MD pen light, a Zebra F-701 or whatever variation, a knife from Tangram, and ... I think that's enough utility for me. Spend the extra on the wallet or a key organizer solution. Oh, or a cheap Casio, like the classic F-91W. The aforementioned is what I used to EDC for a few years. I finally replaced the pen with one from Machine Era, the light with a Zebralight, and the knife with a Civivi. Also a different cheap Casio! From here, I think I'd like to invest a bit more in a Casio with solar and wideband capability. I'm also due for some new prescription eyewear, so that might be my next purchase, tbh.

I’m a registered nurse and it’s the only pen I use. All day, every day. I’ve mixed blue/black, purple/black, black/black, and black/gray

Love this channel dude. Do more of this! Full kit budget, great idea. ---------- I have no doubt in my mind that the Vic Supertinker is the best non-pliers based, generalist multitool money can buy (that's a hot take, I know). In 2021 I challenged myself to carry one exclusively for a full year and to my sheer amazement I accomplished it. I've since switched back to a Leatherman but I have absolutely no doubt that on a budget, the Supertinker will not leave a person lacking, most of the time. Also, I consider myself firmly on team vise-grips for the smallest sizes. I'm a daily user of 10in channellocks (prefer the traditional tongue and groove for dirt work and I like the angle of the channellock brand because they don't hang up on your back pocket when you edc them around a job site), but at the smallest size I find the ergonomics and functionality of miniature vise grips to be better. I've tried hard to like 4in tongue and groove pliers because they're decidedly cooler looking, but I just can't wrap my head around them enough to commit.

I think good budget options make beater daily beaters, I have Leatherman Victorinox and Knipex toys but those buggers stay in the shed. Powerpint 5” Suha water pump plier and a pen style flat head cheap does the job and no tears when they grow magic feet.

I think total budget is better in general but I do agree this is more interesting. The problem with individual budget is that it can limit you from buying a product at its optimum price point in terms of value/money and therefore hurt the overall kit. I'd rather buy things piecemeal and get the most cost effective solution for each item even if it means lacking some usability in the short term.

I find it baffling why some people don't appreciate the corkscrew in Victorinox. It's one of the most useful tools in my pack, coming in third place after the scissors and can opener (with the Phillips bit coming in fourth, or maybe fifth after the tweezers). Even if you don't drink wine, there's always a party where someone needs it. Plus, it can also work as a tiny screwdriver holder and pointed pick in some cases. But yeah, it can be a tough choice if you have to choose just one: a Philips driver or a corkscrew, so it’s better to have both of them included :).
