I just finished modding the scissors from my fantasticar multitool to fit into my LM Curl in the file slot. I'm using the Curl as my go to multitool to carry at work as a firefighter and the original scissors are absolutely terrible. This was a a total game changer mod IMO. The Curl is so so good now.

There are tools then there are tools on a multitool. There are dedicated tools performing as expected. There's also tools in a multitool that we use on the fly due to conveniences. A multitool is a miniature tool box in our pocket. Expected to perform but with limitations unless modified of course. We feel all product tested is quite adequate for its meant purpose and as we all know due to its size, they all have limitations. Great experiment mate.

I must say I love that you go back over your footage and kept yourself honest on review. It was interesting seeing your results. I myself generally don't rely on only one set of Scissors for all tasks. For most precision cutting I tend to reach for my Victorinox... and when I am cutting on tough material I reach for a pair of EMT shears from Maratac. I've got a few mini Maratac shears I haven't used yet that I should try out. Haven't tried to actually rate the cutting as precisely as I'm mostly interested if it did or didn't cut.

I picked up a knockoff of the raptor for $30 just to see how it compared. The play in the pivot points were pretty much the same, the knockoff felt like a factory error but still gets the job done the only real difference for me was price and packaging. Considering how often things get "lost" in the field the knockoff works for me.

I carried a victorinox for 20 years, and I’ll be honest, I absolutely hated the scissors on it. I don’t know if I got a defective product or what, but it never worked that well for me. Im not a fan of the spring mechanism. About 4 or 5 years ago, my wife got me a Leatherman Free P2 and I love it. One of the reasons I like it so much is the scissors work so much better for me. I haven’t had any trouble with them. Even cut through some 2-3 lbs leather I needed to get through quickly. (I wouldn’t use it to cut up a side or anything but it worked in a pinch). Thanks for the video!

I would definitely like to see you re-test the Raptor after tightening the pivot. If you are able to maybe even contact Leatherman and ask if looseness is intended and if they would do anything about it if sent in for service. If you get around to retesting the Victorinox from the first video you could do both together and have a "second chances" special episode.

Great video and presentation. This help me to form opinion about scissors designs. Higher score relates to : - blade thickness to length ratio (assuming edge’s finish grind angle are equal) - steeper outside angle (e.g. like #19/19+ as opposed to #17/18) - slight curved or toe in blades (small ones are linear) - (not on current samples) : inside walls of blades formed / grind concave. The next and most important design rule is each cutting edge must be overlapping by 60~99% of blade width in the closed position. If we are limited to 10% or less on edge-edge overlapping, the next option is an offset hinge. Offset by 60~99% (of the blade width) above the overlapping.

Well, a test of brand-new scissors is one thing, but how they fare after a longer time of use is the dimension an true practic user would be interested the most, wouldn't he? I've observed that the Chinese scissors are pretty good out of the box, but after some use, particularly on harder material, they get dull. Insofar the Victorinox stuff fares way better, but dedicated scissors tend to dominate the field there.

Amazing video as always man, but more so, recently! Gotta say, I EDC the surge and perhaps it has never dissappinted me, I cut everything with total ease, however for most demanding tasks where I know I will be using something more robust, I bring my Cas hanwei multitool shears, which are extreme yet not that huge. I'm also edc-ing the SOG snippet to prepare myself for switching the surge for the gerber dual force, and those scissors are extremely capable for their size, IMO a complete must for people who want capable yet small scissors in their edc, however the fiskars scissors of the last video got me wondering... Greetings from Mexico.

This experiment sort of highlights the conundrum for those of us that expect things to perform at their intended function, as well as to be versatile enough to get things done beyond their intended design. I mean, let's face it. A multitool is a jack of all trades right? So can it be said that to expect mastery from one is kind of unreasonable? This is especially obvious when were talking about the scissors. It all comes down to the hinge, and the blades. Sturdy and robust scissors can plow through denser, thicker and harder materials but will sort of fold or tear more delicate and flimsy or thin materials. Scissors that perform well at precision or cleanly cutting very thin and flimsy materials are usually delicate themselves because the function dictates the design. Some of these designs have solved the problem and accel at cutting a wide variety of materials. It shows that a lot of effort went into the designs, because the completion is fierce and demanding. But at the end of the day, I just don't have faith in and multitool scissors standing up to regular use because the hinge will just loosen up more and more and the cutting will get worse and worse. That's why, for me at least, a multitool is sort of a last line of defense. You keep one in your pack or glove box for the times that it might save your ass. But you will never really do serious work with them unless you are truing to punish yourself or prove the point that it can be done. And anything can be done if you are motivated and smart enough. So what are we to do? Done the cargo pockets and load them down with scissors, and pillars, and ratchets, n sockets, n screwdrivers, n all the other tools these geniuses have managed to cram into something the size of a snickers? Nah. I'll still EDC a surge to handle most of the things that come up day to day without having to stop and go find tools. But I absolutely believe in 2nd and 3rd tier kits for short and long trips away from home. Keep om doing what you do. You're good at it.

I had the same problem with my oxide black surge. The pivot seems loose and the scissor separates and bends thread and line when trying to cut. If i put pressure on the thumb ramp outward to maintain blade contact then it works better, but it is a total disappointment and is the reason i have been looking for a solid set of scissors. The surge scissors were such a let down, and the leatherman flat bits such a compromise that i have been scouring the internet trying to find a tshank blade handle that can fit in the kit. Its the only surge tool that can't be substituted. Right now i use the gingher 5" craft scissors, but i am not a reviewer and haven't had a need to cut anything tougher than 550. It does very well. Looks like your electrician sheers only without the wire strippers etc.

Well, according to my experience, it depends. I have lots of VIC models and also quite a few of the original Wengers and then also Wenger-style modern Victorinox. Generally, I'd agree, but there are materials where the Wenger style type is better. "Way better" is a bit too much, i'd say. Admittedly, the Wengers are more difficult to sharpen, but they last longer before that becomes necessary.

200% agree on wingman they are arrg! The leatherman surge black is inferior to the silver for some reason. I can cut stuff on the silver surge that the black won't even attempt and I think it's something to do with the black oxide coating & yes, I see the flex on mine that the silver surge doesn't have. On the raptor, have you tighten up the screws? My raptor does much better than yours but I'm forever tightening them which is my main complaint. I don't like your precision test because most scissors will fail this but can't think of some else you could try. But overall, your points are spot on.

It takes to much effort to get the scissors out and they can cut those tie wraps but just picking them with the plyers and twisting is way easier and faster... Scissors are the toughest tool to get right. Besides Victorinox (not the wenger version you have in this video) there's not a lot of brand that has really good scissors ! Sadly !

The wingman is a perfect example why Leatherman looses sales. It was my first "expensive" multitool and did not encourage me to go back.

As for the surge scissors, I bought my tool like 7 years ago and I don't remember them bending like that. They do tend to push out stuff sometimes like your wingman did tho

Who the hell cuts things that are circular out on the end of the blades of scissors? I think some of that was a tad unfair because they would have cut if put in even the middle of the blades

Not impressed by the scissors in my surge either, i have to push down and slightly to the side so the blades stick closer together when cutting. As for the paracord, i think you were cutting it a bit to close to the tip, compared to the other scissors, might be that.

There is a diffrece between quality small tools that could be in leatherman (charge and surge) and what is in it. e.g knipex 08 22 145 jaws wera, wiha etc bits screwdriver ergonomics and so on For me lm is kindda necessary evil and for $100+ it should not be one.

Try the tests again but try to use them to cut a big wad of hair. My wife cuts my hair and that is one thing that almost always messes up scissors.

15:43 You are using it wrong. Cutting small, round objects works best with most pair of scissors if you cut it as near as possible to the "screw". This also works often with scissors, where the material is "sliding" through the blades. The reason behind is, that not so good scissors have to much "play" between the blades if they are under a slight force. And the law of lever comes in play: The further you cut away from the "screw" the higher the force pushing the blades aside.
@mdeamicis
@mdeamicis 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. For scissors to maintain that "sheer" profile to the end of the blades, the pivot must be thick enough to overcome the leverage. The longer the blades, the thicker the pivot must be and the more taper the profile has to be. That is the problem that multitool makers are trying to defeat. If you want to pack a lot of tools in the handles, they got ta be skinny.
