If you ever have the time, you should look into an automatic fly/grub harvesting system. There's a video somewhere here on KZbin where a guy built a DIY composter where the grubs climb out of the compost to find normal soil and end up in a bucket -- giving him both extremely fertile compost and buckets of grubs for his chickens.

@@tonygabagool from what I've seen it seems to be mostly due to diet. From what I've seen personally, chickens fed with corn, greens, etc have lighter yolks. Chickens that are eating a ton of dark greens like clovers and grasses, as well as a ton of bugs, generally have darker yolks.

My grandfather knew a guy that set up two fenced garden plots, and built the chicken coop so it sat in between and could open on both sides to let the chickens into one garden or the other. He'd plant one side, and let the chickens into the other side one year, then switch the next. He'd harvest out everything he wanted at the end of the growing season, let it sit over the winter, and then the chickens would go onto that side and forage off of all the leftover greenery and insects attracted to it. They'd scratch and dig, and leave their droppings all over, so when he switched back the following year, not only had the soil had a chance to rest between plantings, it was grub free and well fertilized, and all he had to do was till and plant.

Drop some in the water for the chickens for more calcium in their diet to keep those shells nice and hard! You can raise the larvae on nothing but kitchen scraps, they can even eat meat and dairy unlike traditional composting worms. Basically free nutrient dense chicken feed. Would save you a lot of money on grain and oyster shells. They also have a peculiar instinct to seek high ground before they pupate, meaning you can set up a ramp out of the larvae bin, leading to a bucket and they HARVEST THEMSELVES! Plus chickens love eating live wriggling larvae. Also the adults are not like normal flies, they don't fly around you and bother you, they don't even have mouth parts to bite. They spent 95% of their time breeding and laying eggs near organic material for their larvae to eat.

@@margiemurray2147 I can't explain it perfectly as I am not an expert in the subject, so I recommend doing your own research, but I'll try. When chickens are raised near cats they'll start producing a sort of antibody/enzyme/something like that. This thing they begin producing neutralizes the chemical in cats that makes us allergic. They pass this down to their children through the yolks of their eggs, so it's still there if the chicken is producing unfertilized eggs. By feeding this to a cat, within a few weeks the cat will stop producing the allergenic chemical. I believe you have to keep up the diet for it to stay, but I'm not positive on that.

The egg yok color tells a lot. If it's between yellow and orange , it means your chickens are healthy. Try to change the "organic chicken feed".

This is how we raise chickens in the Philippines 🇵🇭. The hens are free and eating great fed, natural greens and no pesticides or chemicals in their food or surroundings. Great content and I love tasty birds and eggs myself 😊😅❤❤❤
